Wonderful Movie
Sorry, this movie sucks
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
I know everyone knows the term, so good it's bad and I dunno why it took me so long to get round to seeing this little gem. Don't get me wrong but this isn't a masterpiece by any means, in fact it's totally the opposite, it's incredibly terrible. But there's something about it that's also highly enjoyable and just pure fun.It opens with a young couple speeding down a countryside road, after the lawyer wins a 5 million court case, but after getting too caught up in their selves, the car crashes, leaving the girl dead and the man half dead. When he wakes up half of his face has been cut to shreds and he loses it and kills the doctors. Then 10 years later, he's hiding out in an old abandoned asylum where a group of teens and a trio of female rock band decide to party there, which angers the lawyer as he starts to pick them off one by one.The horror stuff here is pretty standard, having the usual stalk and slash when members of the group go off on their own. The deaths are pretty good, even if the effects aren't up to standard, but there is a pretty decent body count. The movie never gets boring as it moves along at a rather quick pace and I also liked the way they injected humour into the plot, but what I didn't like were the scenes of the killer watching old black and white movies, as they seem to go on for a bit too long and just seemed unnecessary and pointless. But there is still fun to be had, and there are several hilarious scenes to be had like when one of the rock chicks fights with one the boys, it was hilarious and has to be seen to believe, then others that border beyond stupid, like the daydream scene with Darnell and the other rock chick running towards each other in slow motion, which was funny at first, but maybe used a bit too much, then towards the end when two of the characters are praying in the old church, despite the fact that a killer is on their tale and even the beginning with the car accident when the girl's hand is supposedly cut off, you can clearly see it underneath the grass, all this is just fun pure cheese and adds highly to the camp factor. The cast, even though it was badly acted, but they still had fun with their roles and each and everyone brought something to the table. Firstly the killer (Michael Rogen) really stood out, he wasn't scary or menacing but more of a wisecracking villain, okay some of his dialogue wasn't funny or didn't work, he did make up for it with his inventive kills. The main girl Kiki/Judy played by Patty Mullen who also played the girl at the beginning was just gorgeous, her performance was very uneven, but she was still an interesting addition to the cast. Then there's Tina (Ruth Collins) who was just plain chewing the scenery and her over the top laugh was just hilarious and she really had lots of fun with the role and didn't take it too seriously. Also including another star before they were famous Kristin Davis who never seems to age, she looks the same here as she does now, she plays the sexy bookworm character quite well and has nasty death scene. All in all if you're looking for scares and chills then "Doom Asylum" isn't for you, this is played more for laughs, but it works and has something likable about it.
A terrible car crash leaves the driver, Mitch (Michael Rogen), horribly disfigured and a little bit deranged, and his girlfriend Judy (Patty 'Frankenhooker' Mullen) just plain dead. Ten years later, Judy's teenage daughter Kiki (also played by Mullen) and her obnoxious pals visit the supposedly deserted asylum where Mitch now prowls the corridors, looking for victims to hack up with his autopsy instruments.I can appreciate the appeal of an unintentionally bad horror movie, but really don't understand why anyone would go out of their way to make deliberately atrocious garbage like Doom Asylum, which knowingly serves up irritating characters, terrible acting, abysmal dialogue, and lousy spoof horror gags. All attempts at humour are absolutely pitiful, with killer Mitch spouting crap one-liners that make Freddy Krueger look like a comedic genius. The film also resorts to padding out the running time with lengthy clips from old black and white horror movies that the killer likes to watch when not out slaughtering teens.Working slightly in the film's favour are the cheap but delightfully grisly make-ups effects, with the goriest moments including a drill though the head, a victim drenched in acid, a circular saw in the face, and some nasty toe-snipping. There's also a fair bit of female flesh on display courtesy of Playboy Pet Mullen and a young Kristin 'Sex in the City' Davis as sexy nerd Jane, both of whom spend the entire movie in their swimsuits, while Ruth Collins, as screechy punk rocker Tina, briefly bares her tits. For the blood and the babes, I award Doom Asylum a rating of 4/10, which is probably more than it really deserves.
Finally I found this hard to find cheap Slasher flick. I watched it for the first time on USA NETWORK several years ago, and it stayed in my memory to these days. I explored the catacombs of a rare video store after digging and getting dust all over me, I found it under the title "The House Of Horror". "Doom Asylum" is a Slasher flick that you have to watch it with very low, (I mean VERY low) expectations because it offers the minimal entertainment for fans of the subgenre. You have to choices: The first is to watch it as a very low budget spoof of Slasher flicks or as a low budget straight Horror flick. You get gore, a deformed killer, sharp instruments to perform kills, hot chicks in bikinis, a cheesy soundtrack, and a very creepy asylum. The death scenes are as cheesy as you want, probably made by an amateur f/x artist. Although I love the drill kill(come on! in slow motion you can see how the drill has a tube that pumps fake blood as it makes pression with the guy's forehead) and the slashed face death; both scenes are extremely cheesy and laughable. I won't even get into the other death scenes because there's almost no production value or even decent fake blood. As a hint, check out when "Mr. Killer" cuts a guy's toes but before doing it, he smells his shoes. There's a lot of black humor in the parody scenes. For example, when the black guy finds the black punk girl both fantasize about running in a green valley and then start to make out and simulate sex. Other example is the scene where the (at the time) survivors go to a chapel and pray for their dead friends! while a maniac is on their hunt. Now that I think, the whole movie is a joke! every scene has some humor , involuntary or not. There are many goofs to laugh about. For example, on the beginning after the supposedly "fatal" car accident, you can see that the Mrs. La Rue's arm is hidden under grass! to produce a visual effect where the audience is supposed to believe that she lost her hand. Also, the killer doesn't seems to be badly burned and even moves without problem; seconds later he appears in the morgue horribly burned. The two main heroines are extremely hot! beautiful, sexy. I really cared for them. That could be a reason to watch the movie. Although there are many reason for not watching it. The killer spends almost 10 minutes of the movie watching black and white movies from Tod Slaughter! Also, the killer looks like a different person on several scenes. First, the make up makes him look like Leatherface, and then like Freddy Krueger (in half of the movie). Well I bet that filming lasted for 3 days. Something to notice about is that the movie's events take place ONLY in the day. There aren't any night scenes, no budget for lightning?! Anyways, I haven't seen that in any other Slasher flick. The movie has no plot. You just see the teens getting killed by the deranged coroner. What really got me about "Doom Asylum" are it's WEIRD dialogues. Check out for lines including Mickey Mantle, Ronald Reagan, the right to choose political preferences, incest, and the weird ending dialogue between the Coroner and his ex lover's daughter. The ending. Oh well, one of the worst in cinema's history. You need to watch it to believe it. I may be out of my mind, but I recommend "Doom Asylum" if you want to laugh about it because all of it's goofs and weirdness. Grab a pack of chips, coca cola, and enjoy this ultra low budget. A hidden gem and almost impossible to find.
Very, very bad. Bad script...bad acting.A few reasons why it's worth seeing --Great filming location -- a magnificent, creepy old abandoned asylum in New Jersey, Essex Mountain Sanatorium. The sanatorium has an excellent web site that chronicles its history from construction to demolition, plus some information on Doom Asylum.Kirstin Davis -- I'm sure she's ashamed of it now, but cool to see her in her first acting role while still at Rutgers.
