Very well executed
Slow pace in the most part of the movie.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
It seems like there exists an extremely strong desire among young and aspiring horror directors to travel back in time to the 1980s. Of all the "new" (2010 – 2017) horror movies I watched, almost half have of them either take place in the 80s or are a throwback in style and/or substance to that same decade. "Almost Human" is yet another example, set in respectively the years 1987 and 1989 and paying tribute to alien invasion and extraterrestrial body snatcher movies of that era. My guess is that these directors are nostalgic about their own youth and the classics that introduced them to the genre, and simultaneously they crave for making less complicated horror flicks in which they don't have to bother with cell phones, social media, internet, etc Speaking of young and aspiring horror directors, Joe Bigos is clearly an enthusiast genre fanatic himself and he undoubtedly watched all the classics as well as the obscure hidden gems worth seeking out; I'm sure of that. His film is straightforward and appealing, and he obviously gives priority to serving gore and entertainment rather than ensuring that his screenplay makes sense or doesn't contain any giant plot holes. During a dark October night in Maine in 1987, Mark got sucked into a flashy blue light that came out of the sky and he disappeared right before the eyes of his girlfriend Jen and best friend Seth. Two years later, the two are still flabbergasted about what happened but try to move on with their lives when they suddenly hear the news of a vicious murder spree in the area. Seth immediately suspects that his missing buddy is responsible for the killings, and indeed, Mark has returned! The alienated, brainwashed and – most likely – anally probed Mark axe- murders his way back to his old house, but he stores his victims in the shed where they go through a sort of rebirth process in a cocoon. It's probably best not to contemplate too much about all of the script's shortcomings, stupidities and senseless details For example, what exactly is this alien race's intention? To cleanse and repopulate the world one person at the time, starting in some random hole up in Maine? What alien race, in fact? We never see any aliens or spaceships, we only see our buddy Mark. And if Mark really has been replaced by an emotionless alien parasite with an earthly mission, then why does he insist on returning to his old house and hook up with his former girlfriend again? Anyway, there are far more questions than the screenplay ever bothers to answer, but the good news is that there's a fair portion of gore and bloodshed to enjoy. The acting performances are so bad they become amusing again. Particularly the people in the supportive roles, like Jen's new lover Clyde, are in desperate need of some basic acting lessons. "Almost Human" is very short – less than 80 minutes – and at least it's never boring, so you won't have the impression that you wasted precious time watching it.
Acting not the best but not the worse. What really caught my attention was the scene where the almost humans were coming out of their cocoons. Made my think of a bjork video. Really look it up. Where is the line featuring mike patton of faith no more. from the album medulla. I swear it bears a striking resemblance haha. But the movie was interesting. Like alien and species this movie has many sexual......i cant think of the word so i will just say images. Of course its not as good as those but OK to watch for free on netflix. Now i am trying to think of something more to say so this review can be posted which blows my mind since im always seeing other reviews about two sentences long. How do you guys get away with that?
What stunned me when watching this film was the sheer, unstoppable, intensity of atmosphere all the way through. All down to the director. The film's tone was partially reality movie (like Blair Witch/Paranormal et al) and partially real movie (great chilling music) and the fact the actors didn't look like they were acting, but were just saying/doing their parts gave an edge of reality to the movie that sucked me in and held me there. I'm not too sure WHAT was making the atmosphere so intense but I was a rabbit in the movie's headlights the whole way through. The killings were good. There were hardly any special effects, and you didn't think there were going to be any, so the first time you see them (I'm NOT saying what happens so no spoilers here!) you're surprised/shocked. Yet even then you feel, somehow, you're there, that he could turn round and you'd be next. It's like one of those nightmares where you're witnessing terrors happening to everyone else in the dream bar you, yet you know your turn is coming and you're trying to wake up before it does. Brilliantly directed movie making excellent use of what little it has. Ignore the idiots calling it 'boring' 'badly acted', if you want a movie that hooks you like a silent scream in your mind and never lets you go till the end, that's the one. I loved it. Best low-budget movie I've seen in a very long time. Don't know if the TV series is based on it but, if it is, that should be great too. (If it's not, ignore that sentence. Never seen the series. Wrong country here!) Ignore the moaning idiots. For intensity of atmosphere, this one's a winner and well worthy of an 8. WOuld've been a 9 if the acting was a bit better! Watch it. Chris.
Seriously, the last half of the movie is flooded with crickets...despite it obviously being winter, or at least cold outside. Okay. 10 star review? Dump that. Hilarious. If this is a 10 star movie, this is either the only movie you ever saw and it appeals specifically to you OR..you're buddies with the director...take your pick. Despite all of this..."Almost Human" is decent. It ain't horrible, but it's not great or even cult level acceptable. It's a low budget, gory, alien indie flick with mostly substandard acting and a pretty thin plot. Dude gets abducted. Dude returns. Dude is alien hybrid on a murder spree and wants to convert us all to aliens via a phallic mouth tube he spits into folks mouth AND he wants to get back with his old girlfriend. Dude's buddy knows it's going down and dog-gone-it he's gonna FIGHT BACK! Yeah! I'd be proud if I made this flick...but I have no experience in cinematography...so there's that. Watch if your in the mood to see that bearded dude kill some people but forget the plot. Why the aliens chose this country dude to take over the world and not a politician, celebrity, or even a prostitute...one can only wonder. I'm not hating...just sayin.
