Please don't spend money on this.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
A group of troubled teens- including a young Seth Green and a Gangster Carelton- have been taken on a retreat in the woods, with hopes that the experience will benefit their behavioural problems. But when they get there, there are weird gelatinous pods growing everywhere...spawning massive mutant ticks...which subsequently start attacking everything in order to feed their insatiable bloodlust.Turns out, the local marijuana farmers have been using an illegal plant steroid on their crops, and it has leeched into the local environment, exposing the ticks- causing them to mutate into their now monstrous forms. Not only do these mutant tick hybrids suck the blood of their victims, but they also infest the bodies of their host- parisitizing, and consuming them from within. They also, apparently, release a neurotoxin that causes the infected to suffer from paranoid hallucinations...before they kick the bucket...or worse...Not only does the group have to deal with mutant ticks, but also the local redneck marijuana farmers, who have gone wholly insane, as a result of their own dealings with the ticks. Will any of them manage to survive the ordeal, and live to tell the tale? Anyone who has been accosted by ticks in the woods, will resonate with the concept of this film. But from the perspective of a horror fanatic...it's pretty tame. The plot line is rather straightforward, and the acting is all-around horrendous- but the ticks are pretty cool (puppets, as opposed to CGI- a testament to the 90's, one might argue). While not the most gory, scary, or cult film ever made...I found it to be worth watching for the concept alone. Because...when it comes to ticks...the fear is real...also, the finale is pretty badass...4.5 out of 10
I imagine if I watched Ticks when it 1st came out, I probably would've liked it but watching it now, it's a true time waster.I had a hard time trying to imagine Seth Green & Alfonso Ribeiro as 2 juvenile delinquents especially Ribeiro.Seeing Carlton from The Fresh Prince trying to play a street punk was just weird & kinda funny but hey, I knew a couple kids from way back when who looked like ordinary everyday people until you got to know them.Anyways, if you weren't scared of ticks before, this movie will make you scared of them or at least more aware they're out there when you're walking through a wooded area.Ticks does have a lot of gross out moments that will make you squirm but not too much else going for it.The best thing I can say about Ticks is that I didn't have to pay to watch it.If I had to pay to watch it then I would've been .
The "nature strikes back" sub genre was particularly big in the 1970s after the success of "Jaws", but it's proved to have real staying power ever since, as evidenced in this no-fooling- around, gleefully gory mutant killer insect flick. The title insects have increased in size and become more vicious than usual. This is all thanks to local marijuana growers who have used herbal steroids to speed up the growth of their crops; their system has developed a leak and contaminated the resident ticks. Now a group of troubled kids and their two chaperones have come to the woods for a getaway and will serve as a potential smorgasbord for the ravenous blood sucking beasts. You know you'll be in for a good time perusing the cast list of this one: Rosalind Allen, Ami Dolenz, Seth Green, Alfonso Ribeiro, Peter Scolari, Barry Lynch (younger brother of Richard Lynch), and Clint *and* Rance Howard. The assorted young ladies are all quite attractive to look at, and the performances are all pretty entertaining. As many others before me have noted, it's hard NOT to be amused by the prospect of Ribeiro, otherwise known as Carlton from TVs' 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air', unleashing his inner gangsta. Green is a likable enough young hero, Clint H. is an absolute hoot as always, and Lynch is, like his sibling, good at creating a suitably scuzzy villain. Director Tony Randel ("Hellbound: Hellraiser II") keeps everything moving at a good clip, and gets things off to a truly juicy start. The KNB makeup effects group create lots of wonderful visuals bound to get the audience going "Ewww..." on a regular basis. The highlight involves a sort of giving-birth type gag, and people are sure to love it. Things build nicely to a fairly exciting climax with the characters confined to a small rural location in the "Night of the Living Dead" tradition, and a forest fire raging out of control. All in all, this is very acceptable "turn your brain off and enjoy" gooey and grisly mayhem done with style and humour, and an unsurprisingly "it ain't over yet" kind of ending. Seven out of 10.
Director Tony Randel who also created other classic flicks, Amityville 1992: It's About Time 1992 and Hellbound: Hellraiser II has created a another gem in Infested.Starring Seth Green who has also been in another classic flick, Idle Hands 1999.Also starring Ami Dolenz. Also starring Rosalind Allen.I enjoyed the violence and special effects. If you enjoyed this as much as I did then check out other classic insect flicks, Phenomena 1985, The Fly 1986, The Thaw 2009, Infestation 2009, Mimic: Sentinel 2003, Mansquito 2005, Initiation: Silent Night, Deadly Night 4 1990, Sucker 2013, Bite 2015, Stung 2015 and Starship Troopers 1997.
