Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
From the beginning opening lines, "Prelude to Axanar" exudes a true documentary flavor akin to a military historical briefing, or a very well put together PBS presentation. With the talents of some of Hollywood's finest actors, including Richard Hatch, Tony Todd, Kate Vernon, JG Hertzler, and Gary Graham, this presentation adds to the Star Trek mythos, and exudes class. These are not just fans reading from a script, but veterans of television and screen, clearly feeling every word in the parts they play.Lending to the acting are Tobias Richter of The Light Works, and sound by Academy Award winner Frank Serafine, as well as Alexander Bornstein for the soundtrack. The CGI and music are first-class attempts at bringing to life what made Star Trek great to begin with; incredible plot lines, stunning visual effects, and an adrenaline pumping music score.Over the years, many fans of the franchise have lamented that Star Trek lost its vision decades ago, but with so much talent aboard, there is a tenable reason for fans to be excited once again. In fact, many fans believe that with the right packaging, "Prelude to Axanar" could well begin another successful run of the science fiction television series.Leading the charge is Executive Producer Alec Peters. Having developed Axanar from the ground up, the talented actor and screen writer has written about the turning point in the United Federation of Planets, when faced with annihilation from the Klingon Empire. Taking on the part of the humble, yet dedicated and brave Captain Garth, Alec breathes life into the character that has a pivotal part to play in the Four Years War.There is a line, delivered by actor Gary Graham, heralding the turning point to the very somber tone since the beginning of the presentation. It is with those words that this reviewer felt the stirrings of something great and heroic begin to grow. Without giving out spoilers in this review, let me just say that Tony Todd, as Admiral Marcus Ramirez, veteran actor of several Star Trek characters and incarnations over the years, has a stand out part that literally caused me to hold my breath and then cheer by the end of an awe-inspiring speech. Not only was there hope given to the story of the Federation, but to others in real life that felt the stirrings of something different, something great, about to happen. "Prelude to Axanar" is a bold and ambitious fan-backed production that has the makings of a feature film. Given life by a stable of some of Hollywood's finest actors of the genre, this effort has taken an uncanny retro-progressive stand, going back to the basics of what made Star Trek what it originally was conceived of by series creator Gene Roddenberry.Love it or hate it, Star Trek is in good hands, and it is only a matter of time before the powers that be realize this. It's time for Star Trek to come back to television. It is my hope that this effort is enough to breathe new life into the series.
So, you got the short answer, Worth Watching? Yes.Probably doesn't but may hint to a ----------------------spoiler----------------------- of how awesome it is!This is Star Trek, a crowd funded campaign of awesomeness, a fan project with a professional production twist, no more awkward almost good actors, this amazing cast comprised of former trek and known actors bring a substance to this prelude that many have fell short of, not here! This project makes the imagination soar and with it the renewed popularity of Star Trek; great CGI, perfect mood, this is not your 90's Trek, it is 2014 trek!
This film is what Star Trek was meant to be. On a Q&A panel the director and producer explained that as they made this film they kept asking themselves "Would Gene Roddenberry Do This?" and they made it true to Gene and true to Star Trek fans.I like how they've used the 2009 ships' models and phaser mounts while fixing the exaggerated ship size and ridiculous out of proportion engines. Its wise to maintain some recognizable features from the latest films. On the other hand I would have liked to have seen the Fleet HQ, Dreadnought, Destroyer and Transport/Tug from the 1975 Star Trek Technical manual. Or even the Klingon Battleship from the '90's Task Force Games Star Fleet Battles. This arms race could have been "bigger" but I see how that would have taken away from their " We were explorers" vein they are pursuing and their unveiling of the Constitution Class. Which is very cool.Where JJ Abrams has turned Star Trek into an unintelligent, mass appeal action romp these guys succeed in bringing it back to its roots and I couldn't be more impressed or eager to share it with my friends who really care about Sci Fi. I can't wait for the feature film.
Prelude to Axanar- Shows what can be done when you get professionals in front and behind the camera donating their time and skill to something they care about. The clever documentary style is one example of how thought went into this. Old fans respond to the care shown to past episodes-yet its documentary style can make some one new to Star trek join in.Star Trek with its history of 5 TV series and 11+ Feature Films has had ups and downs. Recently with the 2 new films -Star Trek has reached larger audiences But in my opinion these films were more a blockbuster money making effort. That's fine for some, for myself I would prefer more care with story and exploring the trek universe. With Prelude to Axanar, that's what you get -you can tell those making it are fans of Star Trek that's very important. The fans new and old respond to that. Its the fact they are invested in making a professional production (for no profit)that is exploring the rich history of Star Trek that resonates. The other great thing is its all history to explain the origins of one character in the Original Series. Just think how many other great stories are waiting to be revealed. And this is just a prelude! The Full feature awaits and look at the kick starter to see how people are eager for that.
