Turtles can fly was a very funny film, with kids running everything at all times. I really liked this film, mainly just because the kids were such amazing actors. The character, Satellite, played such a strong role in the film, and everyone in the camp, including adults, seemed to listen to whatever he had to say. I was always curious why, but i'm pretty sure it was because he was very good at setting up satellites, and getting TV for others. Hence the name, Satellite. This film had kids disassembling mines, showing me this film was not American. In America, we make sure to keep mines out of harm's way, rather than just having them out in the open. The kids would sell the disassembled mines to people in the town, and trade them for weapons to fight in the war. In America no one would legally sell a 13 year old a gun. In this film, I noticed that a lot of these kids had birth defects such as, Clubfoot, blindness, and a kid born without arms. These kids parents probably were exposed so some kind of chemical that made them have birth defects, or these kids parents were not taking care of their bodies while they were pregnant. This really made me appreciate the health care in America, because we have doctors constantly checking up on us making sure we're okay. In Iraq, they don't have present doctors on call whenever they need them, like we do. In the ending of this move, Satellites love, Argin, commits suicide because she could not take her life anymore. I don't think I would make any drastic changes to the ending because it leave us not worried about this character so much. Should she have committed suicide? No, but she couldn't seem to look past her current life, and decided that it was better if she stayed out of others too. The one thing that I would change is I wish that the director added someone, at the end, who fed the boys with no arms. Sense Argin is now dead, he was left stranded, and I worry about him. I now don't know how he is going to eat.

An extraordinary movie. This collaboration between Iran and Iraq for me is about the human spirit. But not in a fist in the air way. It is about how humans keep going, no matter what hand they are dealt, but also about how sometimes it is just too much to go on. The film is set as it says in the beginning in " Kurdistan , Iraq : Turkish Border — a few weeks before the U.S. Iraq war." The main characters are children. all of who whom give performances so natural, that it does them a disservice to cal them performances. They don't act. They ARE. Although reading the artcle linked to below. it is clear that much of this is down to the masterful direction of Bahman Ghobadi Many of the children, are seen to have lost limbs, and in the case of one small child, his sight. But the director never asks you too feel pity for them. Is it a bleak movie, an uplifting movie, It's both. It's also pretty funny. There is one scene, which I thought the movie could have done without. It is the most suspenseful scene in the movie, where the lead character tries to save another character. I just found it a little out of place. But I'll forgive it. NOTE. I was wondering if these children were actors. It seems not. See the article at http://homemcr.org/film/turtles-can-fly/ which explains that they were relieving their own experiences. Although obviously not in all cases.

Really liked this movie although I did not know what the main idea or plot of the movie was suppose to be. However, I do know the focused of the movie was on Kurdish children during a war. There did not seem to be many parents present throughout the film. There were adults but none of them were parent figures. A lot of the kids listened to Satellite, one of the older kids in the group. Satellite was the one to watch over the kids and make sure that they eat something. In this movie a lot of the kids were crippled in some type of way. However, that did not stop them from their daily tasks. The kids are still very active even with their deformities. Even though I liked Turtles can Fly, Agrin's family situation was depressing, but it also added a lot of depth to the story. I also liked how they don't tell you exactly what happens but they let you figure it out as the movie progresses.

Turtles Can Fly, a film directed by Bahman Ghobadi, was a very eye-opening film in that the audience could really feel true feelings from the characters. Taking place in a Kurdish refugee camp in Iraq, these many children live their ordinary lives while also preparing for the invasion of their country from the United States. I found this film to be very informative, but also very entertaining, despite all the dark elements within it.
