This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
I'm giving it a 1 - but let me be clear, I really enjoyed this film. For me a 1 is a badge of honor for this film. Like Troll 2, or The Room - this film is a lot of fun to watch with a group and while drinking. It's a real joy.
Witness the acting prowess of Eric Freeman as he delivers immortal lines like:"... I... Don't... SLEEP!""Naughty!"and the greatest moment captured on film... ever!"GARBAGE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Question for all you lovers of bad movies: Which film has a run-time filled with mostly flashbacks, a good amount of footage from its predecessor which features a killer Santa Claus, and has a famous scene involving garbage cans? If you guessed Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2, then you deserve a million dollars! This infamous followup to the mediocre Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) is one of the all-time lows of film-making and makes a mockery, even of its predecessor. And yet watching it, I couldn't stop smiling and laughing at how silly it was. Yep, it's one of those "so-bad-it's-good" films. Many years after the events of the first film, Ricky (Eric Freeman), the brother of the first killer Santa Claus, is being interviewed by a doctor in a mental institution about what made him and his brother tick. Apparently, Ricky had lived with an adoptive family for years and only started murdering "naughty" people just like his brother after his foster father had died. He finally breaks one day and goes on a killing spree out of pure random, which is totally inconsistent with the rules of the first film, and is arrested when he fails to kill himself. This is what lead to his capture, and now, he's after Mother Superior (Jean Miller), the nun who gave his brother such a hard time in the first film. By the way, I just told you nearly everything that happens in the film because most of what is described here is told in drawn-out flashbacks. Here's the film's biggest problem: there's no plot. Reduce the flashbacks to simple dialogue and you have got a twenty-five minute film at most. Apparently, this whole film was just going to be the first film reedited to look different, but there was a push for new footage as well; so basically, we have a complete mess that doesn't satisfy any requirements for making a movie worth its run-time. If the new scenes were not flashbacks, but led up to Ricky's interview in the institution, it would be somewhat more tolerable as a movie. Also, Eric Freeman's acting is hilariously terrible. When he talks back to the doctor, he doesn't sound threatening. He sounds like a delinquent trying to be tough and failing. His facial expressions go hand-in-hand with the tone of his voice to make the character of Ricky seem completely laughable. Even the boys who play younger Ricky seem to do a better job. Most of the other cast members don't, unfortunately. The whole rule of the first film is that anyone performing "naughty" behavior (bullying, promiscuous sex, rape, assault, etc.) would be killed. The first film did a pretty good job of keeping consistent with that rule. This film doesn't. It starts out with Ricky killing a guy attempting to rape his girlfriend (for which the girl thanks him) and a thug demanding payment from someone paying protection money, but after he kills his girlfriend, Jennifer, and her ex, Chip (who looks similar to Tom Hulce for some reason), for their "naughty" sexual activities, he just snaps and shoots anyone he sees, leading to the famous "Garbage Day!"In short, this is one of the poorest efforts ever filmed and it is just too silly to take seriously. On the other hand, it is so hilarious unintentionally, that it can be a guilty pleasure. One genuine thing I can say about this film, is that it is so satisfying to see Mother Superior get her just desserts.
Searching round on Amazon UK for a DVD of Silent Night,Deadly Night,I was shocked to find that the set containing the sequel, was cheaper than the edition which only contained the original!,which led to me once again, getting ready to find out how silent the night could be.The plot:Visiting a mental hospital, Dr. Henry Bloom goes to talk to Ricky Caldwell, who along with his now-dead brother Billy has spent his whole life in orphanages and mental hospitals, since they both witnessed their parents being killed by a man dressed up as Santa.Getting told by Bloom that today is Christmas Eve,Caldwell begins thinking about cutting the meeting short,so that he can escape the ward, and go on a deadly Christmas spree.View on the film:Filmed in 10 days & with the producer/studio furious over their plans not being followed, the screenplay by co-writer/(along with Joseph H. Earle/Dennis Patterson & Lawrence Appelbaum) director Lee Harry do well to pull the movie out of the corner,by using the old footage to set the outline up for the follow-up,where the writers deliver (unintentionally?) hilarious one liners with some surprisingly memorable killings.Locked up in the mental ward, Eric Freeman gives an extremely funny performance as Freeman, thanks to Freeman trying to make Caldwell look creepy, which ends up making Caldwell look like he really needs the bath room.Final view on the film:A film which instead of giving the viewer a silent night, will instead give the audience a night of laughter.
