The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.

Ever seen a film that coasts from about half way in, and just plays itself out in rote fashion with nothing fresh or exciting to offer?Well, Nin Paniry's "Extracted" is NOTHING WHATSOEVER like that! This not-inconsiderable work of art starts off almost entirely impenetrable, clarifies into what seems like fairly non-nuanced sci-fi (Sasha Roiz's Tom stuck - potentially forever - in the memories of Dominic Bogart's Anthony), and then adds layer after layer of enjoyable subtlety as we gradually come to know its key participants and their motivations better and better. It just keeps getting better and more interesting as it goes along. This is a film that wisely wastes little of its 85 minutes on worries about risky hi-tech (though these are not, of course, absent), and instead has a great deal to say about criminality and what sends people off the rails, but also about the gradual bonding that might be possible between entirely different types of people, about how we throw away the chances we have, and a host of other issues. The sci-fi issue would have made an interesting film by itself, but instead this is also a crime thriller, romantic, and a film about real life that makes worthwhile social comment; and it even manages at least moments of comedy. For my money, the acting here is absolutely exquisite, allowing an entirely implausible story to play out with utter conviction. The lead pairing referred to above is very convincing, though - not for the first time - Frank Ashmore does really great things as Anthony's father, at times stealing the show. And, while Jenny Mollen as Tom's wife Abbey maybe doesn't have too much to do, her nuanced presence in key scenes is more than enough to bring a tear to the eye, as Tom finally works out how he can reforge contacts with the real world of time passing, and ultimately work on a means of returning to that world. In a lesser film, Tom's successful return would have been the - rather predictable - climax of the piece. And fair enough. But here he's back, and we still have more than 10 minutes to run, as not one but two "postcript" elements work their way through, and leave more than a touch of tension in the air.In short, through extremely gifted story-telling, skillful plot development and consummate acting, "Extracted" succeeds in blurring genres in a very attractive way, achieving far more from a lowish-budget piece than we the viewers would typically have any right to expect.A very pleasant surprise, then, and worthy of praise for all involved!

I'm a professional screenwriter and director, and I can tell you how monumentally difficult it is to get a first feature film off the ground and into production... let alone to make it any good. With Extracted, Nir Paniry has done an absolutely stellar job.He has managed to tell a big story that could easily have cost millions of dollars on a modest budget. There's great credit due to the script for that. The film itself is compelling, well cast and acted, emotionally involving and commercially appealing. This deserves a huge amount of credit to Paniry together with his cast, crew and producers. I hope they're as proud of this as I was impressed by it.To pick up on a minor flaw, I agree with a couple of other reviews that have pointed out that the plot comes a touch unstuck in the final denouement when all the details are revealed. But I'll more than forgive it this for its otherwise great strengths and commendable execution. If you haven't seen Extracted and you enjoy sci-fi, then you must give it your time.

This movie, it's sad, it could have been another Primer, but they forgot the number one rule of low budget SF: the writing must SPOTLESS. And it wasn't. the outline is that Tom invents some machine that allows you to restore your own memory, but it can also be used to go into others peoples minds. Now, the first major plot-hole is so obvious, they should have lampooned it: Tom should have realized this himself, it should not have been a surprise to him. But when he does realize, the possibilities for abuse, like finding peoples passwords and codes seem endless. This doesn't even come up at all.But okay. So, Tom, the inventor, gets stuck in Anthonys mind, sure. but it's weird, how come, all of a sudden after FOUR years Tom realizes that Anthony can see him? There's no change in Antony.also, at the end, it tries to do too much at once: happy reunion with the wife, killing the drug-pusher, blame his father for the set up, realizing that Antony is innocent. Also, it's really weak sauce that this whole complicated return of Tom in his own brain, which requires a special setup with his trained assistant, can apparently also be done with a home-improvement DIY kit by his non-technical, and (understandably) overly emotional wife?? Really improbable! Also, wouldn't the priority be to call a doctor? Finally, what happens to Antony? does he go to Toms mind now, does he die? It's wholly unclear. All in all, very sloppy writing, which should never have happened, since writing can be done without a time constraint. Sure, it might be that they had to cut too much out for time, but still Still, a sympathetic effort, but in the end, forgettable. The Melancholic Alcoholic.

It annoys me this film isn't well known or at least recognised. Just because it's not made of CGI and big actors, people find it easy to judge this film as an amateur work. However it has better writing, directing and heart than many other blockbusters out there. Maybe it's because my favourite film is "Moon" that I have a soft spot for indies, but I implore you to watch this film. Domanic Bogart is brilliant and so is Sasha Roiz and I really invested in their characters.I see a lot of reviewers are also frustrated with it's IMDb score. It should at least be 7.6.
