Great Film overall
Good movie but grossly overrated
Absolutely Fantastic
It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
I caught this on cable. Usually I'll change the channel when a horror film comes on, but this one sucked me in immediately. Looks like a low-budget movie, but that adds to the overall sense of darkness/gloom. I did not see the ending coming, and I think that's the sign of a well made film in this genre. It definitely held my interest to the end. I happened to catch it on again later in the week and watched it a second time to see if I could find the little signs that might have given me a hint to how it was going to end. Definitely worth watching.
The movie has some great special horror effects. The opening scene is ghoulishly cool. LOVED IT! Yes the movie follows the basic formula, promiscuous teens do stupid things and split up...yada, yada, yada...but the Reeker is scary and the writing no too bad, funny as a matter of fact. This of this as a Black Comedy and enjoy the special effects and look at this movie to be a "CULT CLASSIC"....watch and enjoy!!! I don't want to spoil the ending. The movie goes quickly, and the characters are likable. You actually want some of them to survive, most of them, all of them....Unlike some other horror films where you don't care....The setting is spooky, an old gas station in the desert. Nothing more spooky!
A stinking beast is coming to kill some college kids? I'm in!There was no doubt that I felt "Reeker" had some potential and the incredible twist ending really showed it. However, there were too many failures during the rest of the film to make the movie that worthwhile. For example, the characters don't really have much going for them. Putting aside that most of them look too old to play the age they are suppose to be playing, none of them really had much character to them and I pretty much, after watching the film, can only remember them by their hair color, gender and, maybe, their name. During the film's running length, not much is done to really feather out or develop these characters and it didn't help things that the actors portraying them didn't look like they were putting much effort into them. With the exception of Scott Whyte as the annoying character Trip; he was giving his all to make sure you hated him every second of the film.Additionally, the film has no real scares to speak of and director Dave Payne did nothing to build tension or even have a creepy atmosphere in the film. Everything you see is one giant cliché in the genre of horror and this becomes even more evident with the lackluster design of the film's antagonist. While Stank Beast works as a metaphor for the film's ending and its stinky attributes has some major play during the twist, the generic look they gave the creature and the fact it looked like the characters were smelling a dirty litter box rather than a horrid monster ready to claim their mortality didn't help sell the film and ended up making me laugh rather than shiver in fear."Reeker" had some potential and I genuinely though the ending was decent but the film suffered from a weak tone, an antagonist that was hard to take seriously, forgettable acting and characters, and not a single scare in sight.Hi! My name is Rev. Ron and I love movies! So much so that I write a blog where I review whatever film I am currently watching. You can read a more in-depth review of this film (and others) at revronmovies.blogspot.com.
It looks like earth and modern civilization but this movie apparently takes place in a parallel universe where things like mutilated women with their jaws ripped off chained to tables and truckers with no legs crawling out of dumpsters are such common occurrences that if you're traveling with a group of people, they're not really worth mentioning to your companions if you should happen to spot one. This is one small example of how laughably stupid the characters in this movie are.Another byproduct of this mysterious universe is that even when confronted by what would normally instill sheer terror in someone, you can only look slightly concerned, this is just one small example of how laughably bad the acting in this turd was.The death scenes were so poorly edited that i had to watch one or two of them a couple times to see what the hell was going on.Oh and there's the "twist", as if it wasn't obvious enough what was going on by the design of the antagonist the MOMENT THEY SHOWED IT they think so little of their audience they make the insane decision to recap and explain in excruciating detail the obvious explanation for this twist.Really sad too since I was very intrigued after the opening of this movie but the first 5 minutes are by far the high point and it's just a sheer drop after that. The myriad of things that make this an awful horror movie all should have been worked out with the script and screen play. There is another extremely low budget horror movie called Dead End with a very similar concept, the main difference between these two is that Dead End was fantastic and handled very well and in a way that it can keep many guessing, and this movie is about on par with the worst made for TV tripe the scify channel can vomit free of charge onto your screen. Do yourself a favor and go watch Dead End. If you've already seen it, then I can tell you this is very similar, you probably know what I mean. The positives? Well, it did end (I can't believe i watched the whole thing :|), and for how obviously low budget it was, the special effects were for the most part well done. I give the special effects a 2 out of 10 and the rest of the movie a zero.
