TERROR FIRMER is, by far, the best of the Troma films. The editing (including Troma's trademark continuity gaffes) and pacing are excellent, the dark humor and gross-outs are relentless, and there is even some intellectual fodder for those brave enough to "theorize" about a Troma movie. The behind-the-scenes murder mystery theme is funny and surreal. The lead actors are also good and command a strong screen presence. But TERROR FIRMER is also great for having about as much male nudity as female nudity. I think this is because the film's writers appear to be making astute comments about the sometimes-confounding nature of sexual desire. This Troma production seems tailored to shock the jocks by pushing lots more than the usual T&A in their faces! The jokes and visual metaphors about penises fire out like bullets -- and the vulgar lines are akin to John Waters at his raunchy best. The only problem I have is with some of the DVD commentaries. There are three to choose from; the one from the actors is decent, but the one from the film's editors is disappointing. They make a film that out-shocks all others, is extremely violent and "weird," and is (in some ways) gayer than any Troma film I've seen -- yet they seem to be almost apologizing for it all, making sure the audience knows they are "straight," and coming off as far too "normal" for such a brilliantly twisted movie. What a buzz kill! Then again, maybe their fear of being (or seeming) gay might also speak for the film's subversive power.Still, the final result -- the movie itself -- is good and worth repeated viewings. Just don't let some of its creators ruin the mystique of their creation.

Terror Firmer is an exercise in bad taste; self-indulgent bad taste mind you. Don't get me wrong, I love the trash and exploitation films like John Waters'; yet at least in his bizarre mind he makes his movies innocent and genuine and behind them all is actually pure brilliancy in character and script. With Terror Firmer, director/producer/egotistic actor Lloyd Kaufman goes to prove that he can push the boundaries of filth to infinity; so far in fact that it becomes seemingly irritating and noticeably self loving. With hyperactive actors (example: Toddster) and an over written script Terror Firmer packs itself up with as many obscene and vile scenes as possible; a foetus being ripped out of its mothers belly, a man eating faeces from another's anus; a hermaphrodites scarred bits. It's just too much and it doesn't want you to not realise it. Terror Firmer is a two hour, self indulgent, egotistic pile of crap with an in your face "look how much of a disgusting and vile independent film I can be" attitude. Make a vulgar and repugnant film by all means, but never go too far and too cocky as Terror Firmer does.

This is considered to be a Troma masterpiece. After seeing it, I suppose I can see why. A Troma film is usually cheap, bloody, and hilarious. This was all that and more. There is literally no limit to the blood, guts, excrement, vomit, explicit sex, death, female full frontal nudity, and male full frontal nudity herein. The film is graphic, horrific, shocking, brutal, and explicit from beginning to end. Is this pornography? Well, not quite. Sure, many may consider it to be, but to me, it's just another major milestone in gross-out cinema. However, can it be topped? I really don't know. I can't really think of many films that feature this much sex and gore in equal amounts. Still, this is entertaining! Sure, it's deeply depraved and shocking, but I enjoyed it. The film wasn't meant to be anything more than what it is. Overall, I'm happy I saw it and I'd happily watch this with my friends, provided that the friends I watch it with are prepared to bare witness to the endless grotesques on display herein. I recommend it, provided that you can handle it.

Larry Benjamin (a thinly veiled Lloyd Kaufman, playing more or less himself) is in the midst of shooting a movie, while all around him ghastly murders are being committed to people associated with the film. All of the "plot" is just a flimsy device to have more blood, guts, bad-taste, vulgarity, and general depravity then even other Troma films never had as much of before, or since thus far. But more doesn't equal better at all, quite the opposite, because while I love other Troma films such as the "Toxic Avenger" films (well accept for the abysmal third one), the first "Class of Nuke 'em high", "Tromeo and Juliet" and others/ This film (the unrated version at least) is so extreme, so artless, so offensive that it gave even me pause to wonder what the hell the point of it all was. Note to Lloyd: I NEVER thought I'd say this in my life. But tone it down a notch or two, bro.My Grade:D DVD Extras: Disc 1) intro by Llyod; Lloyd's Commentary; Editor's commentary; actor's commentary; 19 deleted scenes; 21 alternate takes; comic to film escalator scene comparison; audition footage; blooper reel; Teaser and theatrical trailers Disc 2) the 99 minute "Farts of Dakness: the Making of Terror Firmer" documentary; 3 music videos (Say what you mean by Lunachicks, Freak of the Week by DJ Polo *with nudity AND Ron Jeremy*, and Seeing Red by Entombed); soundtrack spot; promos for All you need to know about Filmaking, and Tromadance film festival; Gyno-talk with Alyce Latorelle wherein she talks of how disgusted she was; a mini interview with Lloyd Kaufman's daughter, Charlotte; the Radiation March (the horrid PSA that's on every Troma disk it seems), and Trailers for "Citizen Toxie", "Unspeakable", "Cannibal the Musical", & "Parts of the Family" DVD-Rom content: Terror Firmer the game (I can't get past the "Toddster level, the nails go by to fast) Easter Eggs: On disc 1, let the credits under the filmmakers menu play through for a re-creation of a phone call; highlight the face in the main menu 3 times for a 6 minute censored version of the film.
