Simply A Masterpiece
Perfect cast and a good story
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
Yeah, I'm a fan of Troma films, to me their the Mad Magazine of movies (in my book anyway); their not the kind of films you take seriously, they don't take themselves seriously. This film is my sixth favorite in my list of Troma movies. I remember discovering this film in the horror section seeing that VHS cover which is cool looking, of course I couldn't see the film because I was too young back then to rent it out and I couldn't stay up for "USA Up All Night", but now that I was old enough this film it was a pleasant surprise because like the radioactive waste going though the school it was contagious fun.I really like the premise which is absurd which makes it all the more funny, having a nuclear power plant built a mere few blocks from the high school; what idiot thought that was a good idea is any ones guess (same could be said about building plants in general). So yeah, the whole high school has unsafe written all over it as we see the plant has more leaks than a discount Yakut and is causing nasty side effects to some students. The effects are great really like the make up effects and design on the radioactive creature, that looks like something out of the "Swamp Thing" comic series; as well as the gore effects which are on par; like at the very beginning some random nerd mutates and burns out which was nasty but a cool effect all the same. Or even some scenes of body horror which are almost worth of the Croningburg films. However for me what really powers this film are in it's humor as well as music. The music in the film is great, it's one of my favorite movie tracks there are just a lot of memorable and fun songs; the theme is great it's one of my favorite themes and it's really catchy. The humor is also great both visual and verbal, there are a lot of memorable jokes and quotes. What's interesting is the fact that the main characters are really The Cretins whom are a mutant gang. Yeah, their villains that are true to their name, but their just a lot of fun and they have a lot of memorable lines and moments. Really like the look of them which just screams wild and crazy and wardrobe malfunction at the same time which is part of why their unique.Spike is my favorite character whom is the leader of the gang, this guy is a total jerk but funny all the same. Really like that punk rock wig and facial make up it's sort of true to the punk rocker style. He's pretty much a guy that just wants to get what he wants in the worst way possible by any means.Gonzo is another favorite, this guy is just a total animal from the facial rings he wears, wild behavior, and just the fact that he doesn't talk much but make some weird animalistic noises.Muffy is my third favorite, on a side note I actually had a crush on this actress shame she didn't do more; she is just a bad girl all the way which is what makes her all the more nuclear hot, what can I say I'm attracted to bad girls. From her outfit but mainly just her personal which is feisty and sizzling bad. There are just lots of funny memorable moments I'll say a few I like I certain fight scenes from a fight in the restroom which is decent, it's not like the battle from "The Warriors" but it worked all the same, the funny thing about that was the fact Spike stupidly keep punching the wall, but then again when you fight in limited space that can happen.Or one with a mutated Warren against some gang members which was solid as it delivered on the gore effects and had my favorite kill in the film where we see Warren bury his fist in the throat of a gang member which was jaw dropping, you gotta see it to believe it.But of course my favorite scene is the evacuation of the school itself which was really exciting and hilarious; yeah if I ever heard there was going to be a nuclear meltdown at the school I'd bolt like hell too. As well as the vandalism where the Cretins are just destroying the school, sort of reminded me of part of the climax of "Rock N' Roll High School" but that was a lot of fun because it's not like that idea of demolishing the school was never was in the back of our minds. However what I really like is despite all the craziness and the humor with it, this film is surprising very moral/thoughtful as it parodies and satires on real life issues like Nucular Power the irresponsible use of it and total disregard for safety. As well as other issues like drugs, STDs, and teen pregnancy and their dangerous consequences; and school violence.Class of Nuke Em High is an explosion of humorous lunacy.Rating: 3 stars
Easy as pie: let a decrepit little town like Tromaville go to waste to save the face of a pig-like boss as a nuclear power facility that's spreading its nuclear crap all over. And, of course, let the high school be (slightly) inflicted on by the toxic sludge, sometimes in the water or in the basement or on random teachers. Oh, and of course don't mind the toxic-pot (made for an "Atomic High", so clever!) that people might smoke and then gain certain nuclear powers (or, for that matter, have little toxic babies that miscarry). But, last but not least, make sure the monster gets out that's been gestating in the basement of the school just to wreak havoc on those bastard Cretin gang motorcycling through the school.Oh, don't worry if I spoiled you anything. While Class of Nuke 'Em High has a plot, it shouldn't be at all your concern. This is the cream of the crop of Z-grade film-making, done with a budget that would make Corman wince and with tons of ingenuity and awesomely bad special effects gore and make-up. The humor is juvenile and stupid and all the better for it; this movie requires that there be bizarre characters, but this goes a step further by making it like a cross between Return of the Living Dead and Lean on Me. The bullies are ass-wipes who are decked out so much you can't see anything like they actually look like (one of which donning a nose ring to rival any one ever worn or seen), and all of the main "good" characters are (near) defenseless dweebs and sweethearts or bad comic relief. And what it comes down to is this - Class of Nuke 'Em High is far from any high art- even its repetitive and sometimes intrusive generic 80's rock track grows thin after the opening theme song- but it's a fantastic party movie. Throw it on and tune in, or maybe sometimes tune out if you wish, and have lots of laughs (and sometimes raised eyebrows) at the mania pulled off here. The monster looks cheap as hell and funny as Hades wearing a tutu, and some of the dialog is actually quite quotable when not trying a little *too* hard. It knows its badness and embraces it with a beer in one hand a slimy crap in the other. One either goes for this as the trash it is or they don't. Those that do get the rewards that Troma offers best, and in this case (with the exception of Toxic Avenger) it's most likely the go-to example for how Troma started out in the 80's. All they could care about is getting smart (or dumb is fine) kids to chew on horror-comedy that is 1/3 parody, 1/3 gross-out, and 1/3 flat out awful. Somehow it all comes together and makes for a wild little ride after midnight.
*Spoiler/plot- 1986, Class of Nukem' High, An 'animal house; typical 80's teen movie about high school angst and sexual & social foul-ups. The two most repressed teenagers in Tromaville High have sex after being contaminated by nuclear waste seeping into the school's drinking water. Their mutant baby, a nuclear creature attacks and infects all parts of the student body with bloody and grizzly effects on their bodies. The mayhem continues until the town and army comes to the rescue to clear up the problem.*Special Stars- Janelle Brady plays the romantic lead with Gil Brenton playing her boyfriend.*Theme- School drinking fountains can be dangerous to all who use them innocently.*Based on- 'Animal House' and Zombie movies.*Trivia/location/goofs- This is a TROMA film. It has plenty of sex and guts, but not necessary the best story or acting on celluloid. Troma's own Animal House rip-off with a few inane twists of female topless nudity and dope use.*Emotion- A shallow but unintentionally hilarious film. The film has every film cliché' unimaginable due to extreme bad taste and writing of those involved. ONLY good for a rainy afternoon's mindless funnies.
When it comes to stupid trash films, Troma have no equal; and while the vast majority of their output is absolute rubbish, now and again you'll find a few gems in the rough; and unlikely as it may seem, Class of Nuke 'Em High is one such gem. The film presents a post-apocalyptic style similar to that seen in films such as The Warriors and Escape From New York, and blends it with the idea of a school being run by several students; which is reminiscent of the hit thriller Class of 1984. This is all then mixed in with stoner culture; as its toxic weed that causes all the problems, and you have a recipe for a successful trash flick. The film opens with a 'routine nuclear evacuation drill' at Tromaville High; a school situated next to a nuclear power plant. One kid goes mental, and it's not long before we see that a local gang are buying weed from a nuclear plant worker and selling it to the kids at school. The weed grows faster than normal; and there's a reason for that, as toxic waste has contaminated it and pretty soon the kids of Tromaville High start acting rather strangely...If this film was made by any other production company; I'd probably say it has a point to make about the advent of nuclear power, but since this is Troma it's clear that they've simply lifted a common fear and turned it into a schlock film. There's absolutely no point to it; but seeing all the general carnage is a lot of fun, and director Richard W. Haines isn't afraid to go completely over the top, despite the obvious limitations of his special effects budget. The film plays out something like a zombie movie; although there are influences from other sources, and not all the afflicted characters turn into mindless beings. The gang at the centre of the film is an interesting troupe, and their style fits the jokey tone of the film very well. It's good to see a film like this that has a sense of humour, and absolutely nothing in the film is to be taken seriously; shown best by the fact that the central location is 'Tromaville', and is the 'toxic chemical capital of the world'! The special effects towards the end get a little silly, but it's all in good fun; and while this movie won't be to everyone's tastes, if you enjoy schlock horror - you'll love this!
