Best movie ever!
A Masterpiece!
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
I saw this way back on a VHS in the late 80s. Revisited it recently on a DVD. The effects still looks good. The gore effects is terrific. Arms get ripped off, heads get bashed together until the skulls burst open, and guts get ripped out from people's stomachs. Ther r two scenes that involve a head being crushed. The first one is that of a child on a bicycle n i found it to b offensive n repulsive. The other scene takes place inside the health club. This scene was shot way before the one in Final destination - gym scene. The plot is about a weakling janitor who is harassed by sadistic gym goers. In one harassment the janitor jumps out from the window n lands himself in a drum full of toxic waste. Later the janitor turns into a strong n hulk like deformed freak who fights off the evil men. The guy who played the janitor is hilarious with his pathetic facial expressions.
A young, innocent boy rides his bicycle at night, before his fragile body is thrust against the violent face of a speeding car. He is purposefully run over by a maniacal group of masochist teens. The scene in which this atrocity occurs in "The Toxic Avenger" actually works as a comedic highlight.Yeah...it's that kind of movie. This is the cult classic posterchild of Troma's line of horror comedies, and it is certainly among the most memorable and chaotic cheesy flicks of the 1980's. Unlike many other ridiculous, low budget horror movies, "The Toxic Avenger" is an intentional comedy; a movie that mixes disturbing themes, black humor, occasionally sharp social satire, and absurd, surrealist HORROR MOVIE MADNESS! This is a movie that refuses to hold back any punches. Gore, drugs, sex, violence, masturbating to photos of dead children-it's all here, and it's all darkly hilarious!Recommended for those who enjoy B-movies, satirical black comedy, and shocking exploitation cinema.
This is probably about the most famous and best known title that Troma studios have released. It's an uneven black comedy, with a high gore quotient and lots of lame jokes and laugh scenes. However it's still highly entertaining if you're in the right silly mood, and the title and reputation alone make it a must see if you're a fan at all of exploitation cinema. The cast is full of nobodies, actors who look like they've been picked off the street, and fill every clichéd role in the book as they madly mug at the camera. To be fair, most of the actors don't take themselves too seriously and a few of them are hilariously over the top. The laughs range from the quite clever to the downright stupid, with the mickey being taken out of the overweight, the blind, just about anyone you can think of really. Therefore the film isn't for those who get easily offended. The story about a nerd who turns superhero is infamous and clichéd by now, but it was still quite fresh here and therefore it's quite enjoyable. Some sequences are highly reminiscent of Frankenstein, especially with the blind girl, although not as highbrow. Basically the plot is an excuse for a series of violent fight scenes, where the Avenger murders the baddies in various graphic ways, including ripping the entrails out of them, frying them in a deep pan fryer, burning them in a microwave and even drilling them. These fight scenes are all quite enjoyable and fun to watch. There is plenty of the above mentioned gore to enjoy and lots of topless girls to add to the exploitation feel, as well as some out of place classic horror movie music. This just adds to the feel of the film, which is a totally crazy and insane one. The special effects aren't bad for Toxie; although pretty rubbery, they are good value for money. The most interesting thing about this film is how much was achieved with so little a budget, all you need is a little imagination, and this film succeeds with that. With lots of sequels and even a cartoon following, this uneven but likable comedy is probably worth a watch.
I've always loved this movie. I wanted to put in a short review here for why.I think most humans are basically horrifying savages, and that the only thing keeping us from living in a jungle of rapists, murderers, drug addiction, and diseased whores are the artificial constructs of civilization. Most movies try to lie about this in order to sell some kind of agenda. The Toxic Avenger not only sh*ts all over the myth that there aren't a lot of truly terrible sociopaths out there who cruelly exploit the weak. It shows these people's actions coming around to not just bite them in the ass, but literally CRUSH THEIR SKULLS. Young, old, ugly, beautiful, male, female, rich, poor, powerful, pathetic -- NO ONE escapes judgment. I don't know if it was the intention of the filmmakers, but to me that makes this a movie with a deeply moral message. It doesn't surprise me that people think it's "politically incorrect" to hold people unconditionally accountable for their actions, which is what I think people find offensive about this movie far more than the violence. Like the hot slut (Julie) who was an accomplice and a lover to a murderous child-killing psychopath (Bozo). Does she get merely intimidated, or shamed, because she's an attractive young woman? No, the seed gets gutted alive with a pair of scissors! =) =) =) The instinct to be in touch with one's personal divinity is every bit as savage - has to be - as the evil turds who want to turn the world into their sadistic playground. Finally a movie that "gets it"!This movie's a tongue-in-cheek primal scream for someone who hates evil.
