There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Set in a post apocalyptic world, the people still need to be entertained. Juggers bring that entertainment playing a gladiatorial style game sort of like rugby, yet nothing like it at all.The Blood of Heroes is by no means 'A-List' material. It IS, however, gritty, riveting and driven. You care about the characters. You find yourself verbally cheering them on! You want them to succeed. The Blood of Heroes does just that - succeed - and in a big way. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been remade with a larger budget considering the trend out of Hollywood these days. I have to admit to being a fan-boy of Rutger Hauer. Performances by other up and coming names are also fun to watch. Add this to your list. You'll be glad you did.
(This does not really contain plot spoilers; however, because I am describing the nature of the characters it could be considered a spoiler because it may indicate the general direction of the plot). This is a B movie because it does not seem to be that well known but some of the actors are fairly well established. As long as you are aware of what you are going to get (in terms of film type) then this is a really satisfying film. When it first started off it seemed to have a rather tacky feeling to it. It picked up soon enough and after a while I really started empathizing with the characters. None of them appear to be strong as individuals but this adds to the sense of them being the underdogs (that is vaguely a spoiler). The acting is not amazingly expressive but the economy of the acting seems to give a sense of depth to each character. The main characters are tough and dangerous but also vulnerable and scared, like people who have endured a harsh and painful life. The ambient nature of the setting gives a sense of depression and hardship but there is a subtle undercurrent of humanity. Even though life is rough and dangerous, people still seem to have an obscure kind of respect for each other. This comes across as realistic to me. Too many dystopian type films seem to focus on people's complete lack of regard for human life. People are nasty to each other in this film but they still seem to have that vital spark of humanity. It is hard to describe but I believe that it has to be seen to be understood. It is not unnecessarily violent but I could almost feel the pain and discomfort due to the clever camera work. Enough gritty action is shown without the need for explicit scenes of gut churning violence. The steady pace that the film goes at could maybe be seen as boring but to me it just went at a perfect rate. The story is simple but the economic plot shows enough human interaction to provide a meaningful story. The film is more concerned with mood and ambiance than complex story-lines. I really enjoyed it but I could imagine some people wanting more complexity. I was going to give it 9 but only because I could imagine certain people wanting more. I guess beauty is in the eye of the holder and for that reason I give it 10.
Made at a time when these post apocalyptic movies were heading right down the pan, Salute of the Jugger, is one of those films I wanted to watch for a while, and, 22 years after its release, I get to see it, and be sorely disappointed.I for one, we're expecting some sort of Mad Max meets Rollerball, with some fun chucked in for good measure. What I got was a miserable bunch of injured people walking across the desert, with a little bit of Land Of Doom and Solarbabies thrown in.It's not the casts fault, Hauer and Co are perfectly fine, it's just edited poorly, lit poorly, and so uninvolved, you really care less what happens to the 'rag tag' team. Some people call this a cult movie, and a film for the ages, it's not, it's a cheap, miserable little film, with an okay performance from the cast and little else.If you like maundering people walking across the desert chucking a skull on a stick, then welcome to the pleasure dome.Otherwise, stick with Mad Max and Blind Fury.
The Salute of the Jugger is set in a post apocalyptic future where civilization has ended, the Earth is now a barren wasteland where just to survive is tough. A team of Juggers travel the wastelands challenging small villages to a brutal game that is a cross between football & wrestling. While in one village the team recruit a new 'Quick' member named Kidda (Joan Chen), as she begins to get to know team leader Sallow (Rutger Hauer)he tells her that he once played in the professional league but was banished after an affair with the wrong woman. Kidda convinces Sallow to head back to the Nine Cities & challenge the league in order to obtain the fame & fortune that goes with it, Sallow decides to give it one last go & together with his team is set for a showdown with the best Juggers in the world...This Australian & American co-production was written & directed David Webb Peoples & was one of those films that came out here in the UK in the late 80's with striking artwork on the video box that I always remembered, well I finally got a chance to see it (all sorts of stuff turns up on obscure cable telly channels) & can honestly say the wait wasn't worth it. I would say that The Salute of the Jugger which was retitled to The Blood of Heroes for it's US release is a cross between Mad Max 2 (1982) with it's future post apocalyptic landscape setting & Rollerball (1975) with it's futuristic violent sport that is seemingly so popular. I can't say I liked The Salute of the Jugger, I thought the character's were thinly drawn & the Jugger game itself is never really explained so it's difficult to understand just what is going on or the point of it, it has something to do with placing an animal skull on a stake but other than that your guess is as good as mine. It's a crap sport anyway, I certainly wouldn't be interested in playing or watching it. The whole script seems to be lacking substance, the events that have created the post apocalyptic world are never revealed, personal relationship's & character backgrounds are left ambiguous at best & the way society is run & survives is also a mystery. There's no sense of a place or a world here, the Jugger game makes no sense while even the basic premise of most sporting action dramas where the underdogs come through against seemingly impossible odds is underplayed. The Salute of the Jugger never worked as a human drama, a futuristic post apocalyptic film, an action spectacle or a sporting event & ended up being a slow moving thriller with little to recommend it.The futuristic world looks quite nice, this obviously had a fair amount of time invested in the sets & production design but it's not like we haven't seen it before though. The film has a very natural sandy & dark look to it that does get a little repetitive. There's little in the way of violence or gore, a few of the events have various people hit each other but nothing graphic.Filmed in Australia on a pretty good budget by all accounts The Salute of the Jugger should look better, should be more exciting & captivating than it is. The cast are OK, Ruter Hauer isn't much of an actor, Joan Chen is alright while respected actors Delroy Lindo & Vincent D'Onofrio turn up.The Salute of the Jugger is meant to be a post apocalyptic action film with a sporting theme but I found it rather forgettable & boring, the sporting scenes lack any intensity or excitement & the lack of clear rules don't help either. Not a film that I will be in any hurry to watch again.
