best movie i've ever seen.
Absolutely Fantastic
The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.
Bought this movie without really reading who's acting in it. Once I put it on, wow! Sophia Loren!!! I'd not yet watched any of her movies so Cassandra Crossing came as a blessing in disguise. She's still stunning at age 77.The movie was very nice. I found the suspense really good. Made me quite edgy wondering if the train could be saved in the nick to time. And some glamorous scenes involving Sophia Loren which is always a treat to watch :) Even the beautiful Ann Turkel was a pleasure on screen.I think the climax scenes could have been more convincing. And the movie could have been more racy.Verdict: Thumbs up anyway. Repeated viewing factor: No
The current H1N1 epidemic (swine flu is a misnomer) makes "The Cassandra Crossing" a little more interesting. Mostly, this story of a terrorist spreading a disease on a Swiss train is a common disaster flick, what with the giant cast. I'd say that the upside is that it shows how the military officer (Burt Lancaster) tries to cover up the problem. The 1970s of course saw a lot of movies about suspicion of the government (like "The Parallax View" and "Three Days of the Condor"). A really fine scene is Sophia Loren in her slip. So, this isn't any masterpiece, but certainly a fun one. Also starring Richard Harris, O.J. Simpson, Ava Gardner, Martin Sheen, Lee Strasberg, Lionel Stander, Ingrid Thulin, Alida Valli, John Phillip Law, Ann Turkel, Ray Lovelock and Lou Castel.
I'm channel-checking right now and saw this movie. Sophia Loren and Ava Gardner and this is the best the writers or director could do? And O.J. . . .I think he did kill his ex-wife, but a great running back, yes. So, while I hate Pete Rose, why isn't he in the baseball Hall of Fame? I haven't heard that he's offed anyone lately. O.J. is still in the football HOF.Can you imagine Loren and Gardner in a movie together? As I'm writing this, I can't even remember the title of this crappy movie that I'm not watching. Sophia and Ava . . .now that was a pairing even a mediocre writer could have pulled off successfully with any kind of script. The two ladies could have done anything together. But this, it's like, "Will Trog be the sequel?" Well, back to DVDs.
Terrorists spread the Plague on an all-star cast aboard a luxurious European train. After a fairly decent opening, the star-studded cast gets down to the task at hand, making you bored silly. In the underwear scene sweepstakes, Sophia Loren easily beats Martin Sheen (Ann Turkel and Ray Lovelock are disqualified, for not showing enough). Richard Harris portrays a doctor. O.J. Simpson masquerades as a priest. Lee Strasberg impersonates an actor. Burt Lancaster and Ingrid Thulin aren't actually on the plague-infected train, but look pained anyway. In the softest focus, Ava Gardner appears to be having some fun. If only Lionel Stander did an impression of Hervé Villechaize exclaiming, "The plague, the plague!" they'd have had a potential comedy, instead of a disaster.*** The Cassandra Crossing (12/18/76) George P.
