Pretty Good
The movie's not perfect, but it sticks the landing of its message. It was engaging - thrilling at times - and I personally thought it was a great time.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
I was obsessed with Aqamarine as a child. I would watch it everyday, and played games with my friends pretending to be characters from this movie. It was my dream. My salvation. However, as a young adult, I have realized that this movie kind of sucks. While the film is great for the target audience of younger viewers, it for sure fails to capture teenagers. The content is overly dramatic, sometimes poorly written, and very immature.Aquamarine tells the simple story of a young mermaid, played by Sara Paxton, who swims away from home, and encounters two teenage girls who live by the sea. As the friends begin to get to know this mermaid, they start to teach her about human life and stereotypes. Along the way, a side plot about a love interest is introduced. This mainly involves confusion over the mermaid's lifestyle, which leads to the film's attempts at comedy. Some of them work, others...do not. Really. The love interest character of Raymond is by far the worst character in this film. His cheesy lines, and slow jumps, are horrendous and cringeworthy. His acting is not terrible, however, they did not give his character very much to work with. The three lead characters all seemed to work well together, and seemed like actual friends. Their performances are generally great. Especially from Jo Jo, in one emotional scene towards the end of the movie. It is interesting that only Emma Roberts has been truly successful after the release of Aquamarine. At the time of this review, I have heard nothing about Sara Paxton nowadays, and only a word about Jo Jo's music career. As far as other other characters are concerned, the handyman Leonard is not really needed here. He has only a few scenes where he furthers the plot a bit. Other than that, he walks around in the background, and does not say very much. The main antagonist, Cecelia, is obnoxious, and did not do very much throughout the film other than complain, and act as the stereotypical mean girl.Overall, Aquamarine is fun, and a lighthearted, sometimes emotional film that is great for younger kids and parents who are looking for a family friendly fantasy-esque movie.
In a Florida beach resort town, Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey (Joanna 'JoJo' Levesque) are best of friends. And after this summer season, one will move to Australia with her parents. After a big storm, they find mermaid Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) in the hotel pool. She promises them a wish if they help her prove to Neptune love exists. So the girls set out to set up Aquamarine with the local lifeguard. This is a sweet film. There is some fun in Sara Paxton as a mermaid. But it's the two girls who sell this movie. They have good chemistry together. It's a simple movie, and not much more.
This is an adorable little movie and it leaves a very good feeling. The filmmakers succeed in creating a very positive atmosphere -- it really transports you back into your teen days! For the duration of the film I turned 13 again and God did it feel good. The film left me feeling younger and happier for a long time, so for this alone it deserves a very high vote. The story contained a few good and unpredictable twists -- no spoilers here, but it's well-plotted and delivers a good message. The main idea of a mermaid capable of turning into a girl at daytime is a lovely new take on traditional mermaid tales and the ending was perfectly unpredictable and uplifting. Could use more of the same!
I have to admit I liked AQUAMARINE quite a bit. My three year old is obsessed with mermaids, so it seemed like a good movie for her. There's a bit of risqué humor in it and a few mild four letter words, but for the most part it's a funny, unpredictable and fairly intelligent comedy. That it has such a low IMDb score is surprising to me.While the movie is decidedly for older kids, most of the relatively mature subject matter went over my daughter's head. I'm sure some parents were uncomfortable at the notion of a naked girl showing off her newly discovered buttocks (even if they are blocked from view) or Emma Roberts expressing dissatisfaction with her undeveloped breasts, but my feeling is that parents are way too sensitive about the amount of sex and nudity to which their children are exposed. I thought the movie handled these moments realistically and discreetly. The humor has a nice sarcastic bite to it to temper the more sugary moments. There's some good, unforced slapstick, surprisingly witty dialog and enthusiastic performances all around. I also like the fact that the whole movie has a fantastic, dream-like feel to it. It makes it feel like a true modern-day fairy tale. While it is no SPLASH, it's still a fun little movie that I think I could watch again at my daughter's request. Finding a kids' movie that isn't brain dead is rare; then again, you could say that about quite a lot of Hollywood's output, kids' movie or not.
