A Major Disappointment
A lot of fun.
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
What's the most honest conversation you've ever had? What did it take to get you there?I saw this movie by accident years ago and initially got caught up in the train wreck of the characters lives. However, as the story continues with absolutely perfectly framed scenes it slowly strips away the characters every wall, crutch, and dependency by which they hide the truth about themselves. What's left are the connections they have made with each other. If you can grasp that, welcome...enjoy the party. You'll appreciate the set pieces/props and their metaphoric roll, from Wheatfield with Crows to Buddha.Hunter Richards is absolutely brilliant and doesn't get enough credit and the critics have deprived us all of a magnificent director....if you just see drug addicts and sexualization there's always cartoons or Michael Bay films - both fun to watch.
I'm not sure if there will be any spoilers in here but I checked the box anyway in case I accidentally reveal more than I should have. I liked the movie, but there are some aspects that seemed so unrealistic that it somewhat put a damper on it for me. This guy invites a complete stranger to go to a party with him that he wasn't even invited to to begin with. It's in a super rich apartment and they go upstairs into the bathroom to do coke. The chick throwing the party doesn't even like him to begin with, yet she lets him and a stranger go upstairs and disappear for an hour? Not to mention she doesn't want people doing coke in her apartment. Nobody knocks on the door and asks to use the bathroom? Sure, maybe there was more than one, but at parties people have to relieve themselves all the time, and will use the other one if the first one is occupied. Usually there's a line of people waiting. Another thing is they have an enormous pile of blow on a painting on the sink and they're not concerned about someone coming along? It's not like you can pick up a huge pile of powder and just stuff it in a baggy in a couple of seconds. And you never see them picking it back up before going downstairs. And that giant window in the bathroom- I know it had an okay view and everything, but no curtains? Maybe I'm getting picky in my old age.
For some reason I enjoyed this as much as I did THE RULES OF ATTRACTION and IN MEMORY OF MY FATHER (actually the latter is a FUNERAL movie, not a PARTY one, but...). I can't explain it. I just enjoyed the endless scenes of partying, drugging and drinking and wacky dialogue about pregnant rabbits, rice experiments and impotence destroying every aspect of a man's life.In short, losers at a party, bawling, fighting, reminiscing, and making complete asses of themselves. Chris Evans acts his hind-end off and is an absolute joy as he curses out his psychiatrist and later gets cursed out by Jason Statham, who is also a load of pure fun!!! Jessica Biel is good too, but really, Evans and Statham and their priceless banter are the reason this movie is fun to watch. The ending was a bit cryptic. This couple fought like dogs and cats, yet somehow, they truly loved each other. They had some kind of bond. It was touching while it was a bit baffling.
Jason Statham has hair! Pretty nifty.I read Chris Evans enjoyed filming this movie, and it shows. The conversations flow and Chris Evans, as well as Jason Statham, do great acting. I watched this a while back, but after reading Chris Evan's response to a question, I realized I had to leave a positive review for my positive experience. This is extremely underrated, it reminds me of the rawness of Before Sunrise/Before Sunset, but with darkness. The plot is beautifully set up, the only fault for others might be the non-typical ending, but I believe this film is perfect from beginning to end.Do yourself a favor and view this film and do so with an open mind.A thought-provoking movie with enjoyable humour and realistic dialogue.Enjoy!
