Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Simple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.
Cellular is an entertaining fast-paced thriller. The plot is about "Ryan Ackerman" (Chris Evans) who gets a phone call from a complete stranger "Jessica Martin" (Kim Basinger) she is very distressed and tells him that she has been kidnapped and that she has been clicking wires together, he doesn't believe her, but he still decides to go to the police to help her, there's commotion at the police station and he is told to take the phone call upstairs to another cop, "Ryan" then hears the bad guy "Ethan" (Jason Statham) over the phone threaten "Jessica", "Ryan" then believes her 100% and goes out of his way to help her.The performances are perfect and there's a tiny bit of humour mainly from an arrogant lawyer (played by Rick Hoffman, his character actually doesn't have a name). The only thing wrong with this film is the swearing, the words "Holy S*it" are used a lot and there's no need for it, Larry Cohen and Chris Morgan should have calmed down with those curse words when writing the story and screenplay (movies are not realistic, so why not go one step further and ban swearing from movies altogether?! and use milder words like "Oh, Snap" instead?!)Apart from the swear words, Cellular is brilliant. It is compared to "Phone Booth" (which has even more swearing, that movie has so much swearing that it actually ruined the film). There probably will not be any future movies similar to Cellular due to cellphones changing dramatically over the years, there's many ways to call for help via cellphones nowadays, a plot like Cellular probably wouldn't be even halfway plausible anymore.
Thank you paulsandberg from United States and Anthony Dunn from Denver, Colorado. Reading the first few reviews of this film made me think I'd been watching a different "Cellular" movie. But no, I was right. This really WAS such a bad movie and all the previous and ridiculous reviews praising it and saying how wonderful and exciting it was were clearly written by friends / partners / husbands / wives / (you get the idea) of the producers / director / cleaner (you get the idea), etc.I could only stand it for 25 minutes and gave up when he "got cut off by a bus".I liked the way all the girls at the beach were about 18 to 25, single, perfect bodies, without any guys, totally available and ready to talk to anyone. I mean, this is so much like real life. And when he jumped in his car, parked right there on the beach road, where no one else wanted to park... so much like real life.Just don't waste your time on this nonsense.
This was a pretty good thriller, it starts out kinda cheesy but (Kim Basinger) gets herself kidnapped almost immediately so that the action starts within the first 5 minutes and never lets up. The plot is simple and there's nothing really remarkable here but still a solidly entertaining movie. The cast was decent too with Kim Basinger as a science teacher who reaches out on a damaged phone after being kidnapped. She does as a great job of looking scared and shaky throughout even if her dialogue gets a bit stilted at times as she was obviously doing voice-over for most of this.Chris Evans is the voice on the other end of the phone who at first doesn't believe her and then as the movie progresses finds himself running all over Las Angeles to help her and her son. Some decent action scenes there. Jason Statham was a surprise face here and this must have been made before he got top billing as he just plays Thug #1 and there aren't any fight scenes from him.I really enjoyed William H Macy (as I always do) he plays the good cop and his story was on the comical side of things; with a cool moustache he dreams of opening up a day spa with his wife, sampling mud masks and ultimately kicking ass. 8/17/15
The kidnap hostage always has a cell phone to call someone with. Why did the kidnappers let her keep it? The cell phone can call other people in other places as well as the two people talking all at the same time. Conveniently the bad guys answer the phone instead of murdering their hostage. The hero drives his car backwards full speed through a tunnel jammed with traffic without hitting anyone. The action is entertaining but the fights are stretched out too long just like the other scenes in the movie. Even the corny line of Basinger after she's been rescued, "how can I ever repay you?" sounded more like a line from a MAD magazine movie satire than any film someone would make. Stuntwork goes overtime to impress people and cover the absurdity of it all.
