Just perfect...
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
SNL to movie transitions are risky, but this one held up. Several scenes throughout had me laughing hysterically. I'm more of a horror movie fan than comedy, but I made an exception here since I felt the MacGruber on SNL was mildly funny. This movie flew under the radar, I didn't even realize this was made into a movie until recently, and then I searched it out.I'm glad I did.The movie is goofy throughout, almost as if you're watching an extended sketch (which in all reality you are), but it's hilarious. There were several scenes in the movie I won't mention here, that I thought I would have to turn it off I was laughing so hard. Actually I hadn't laughed that hard in a long time for a comedic movie. To sum up, goofy, silly plot, absolutely hilarious. Watch it if you're in the mood for a good laugh.
This is the stupidest and a rowdy film that SNL has ever done involving Forte's character. His character just seemed to be like one of the guys who talks complete rubbish and doesn't care about anything he says. I laughed when he just showed himself off at the nightclub and became violent that he broke a windows leaving the party people gob smacked xD Although I didn't consider the sex that great like I know it's his character sense of being a foul mouth dirt bag but it just looked rotten when he did it to the two women he loved. I was a bit disappointed at Val Kilmer's character, he didn't have that villain 'look' or 'voice' in him. He just looked normal to me, they shouldve picked a better villain that looks and acts scary in order to destroy Macgruber. Kirsten Wigg was awesome at playing Vicki like seriously she can act in anything from a girly girl to a serious woman with swag :DIf you like James Bond, then you'll love the action in this!
The story gets tries to be serious at first. And considering it's an action comedy movie, it tries too hard. And when it kind of succeeded, it's disappointing when the funny parts come crushing in all the seriousness. The unfortunate events that are designed to be funny points of this stupid movie just don't fulfill their goals because the serious buildup is overly strong to be topped by such lacking designed clichés. The dialog also sound very stupid. The acting is just lame overall. I'm surprised that even Val Kilmer quite sucked here. Will Forte tries too hard and gets his acts hyperbolic and it's the worst down turn for this movie. I was surprised myself to have braced until the end of this stupid movie.
I have heard some describe this movie as not a MacGyver parody but an 80's action movie parody. They are right. But what they fail to mention is that as an 80's action parody, it fails flat on its face. Most of the jokes are unfunny and MacGruber is not a likable character. You are force-fed his humility and therefore it comes of as cliché, and unbelievable. When your main character is a jerk throughout the movie who know you have a problem. Val Kilmer in my mind is one of the perks of the movie. The other is Ryan Phillipe. The jokes are usually crude and come off as mostly juvenile. What this movie needed was someone to write a better MacGruber characterization. Let's remember Wayne's World. Both Wayne and Garth's characters in that movie were likable from the start and furthermore, the character's that came out were flesh and blood, real and genuine. That's what this movie needed, a genuine character, not stock and cliché. Definitely a rental.
