An ex-special forces soldier turned boatman is hired by a journalist to investigate a top-secret military base on a nearby island. Far Cry is a terrible and way too cheesy action, sci-fi flick from just the very beginning you're in for a really terrible ride for sure. The film also wastes some pretty well known faces such as Til Schweiger and Udo Kier plus the storyline? Was quite stupid to say the least and from what i know the film is based on a game franchise which although i've heard i have never actually played in my life and after seeing this? I don't want to. It's hard to believe that a movie adaptation of a well-known action/sci-fi PC/video game could be so horribly screwed up and not even close to the premise and plot of the game. About the only similarities are some of the names (Jack Carver, Valerie, Dr. Krieger), an island locale, and intense fire-fights and action scenes. The similarities end there and only there. The rest of the movie was a re-imagination which would have been better left in the shred bin than ever being taken to film. In fact, the game's plot and story was far better than this piece of trash screenplay. *** SPOILER ALERT - READ ON IF YOU HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE FILM OR DON'T CARE ***For starters, Jack Carver is played by an under-built Til Schweiger who is actually a German in the film. This is ridiculous to get the main character totally wrong. Jack Carver from the game is an American and is much more buffed than Til's Carver portrayed in the film. Plus, hearing Til's high-pitched, accented voice in place of the deep, tough American Jack from the game grated on my ears the entire film. CASTING EPIC FAIL!Second, Valerie was also mis-cast and her character resembled nothing like the one in the game. This Valerie was a soft, helpless dame compared to the beautiful but tough Valerie in the game. There was also no connection to the CIA in the film as there was in the game, so yet another reason her character was ill-portrayed. Having her as just a reporter really dumbed down the plot even more.Third, NO TRI-GENS! Instead we get a cheesy reboot of albino-looking Universal Soldiers. The Tri-Gens were one of the scariest elements of the game, and to remove them from the plot entirely was one of the biggest mistakes they made with this film. It turned the plot from a tense action/sci-fi/horror plot into just another mindless action, fire-fight, explosions romp. It's a consideration that perhaps they didn't have the funding to do the Tri-Gens properly with all the extra special effects that would have been required. Either way, they should have canned the film until they could include one of the central elements from the game.Fourth, they got the island locale right but that's about it. The island resembled nothing of the lush, tropical environment of a remote Pacific island. Instead it was off the coast of Washington state: hardly a believable location for a mad scientist's genetic experiments! The poster for the film is extremely misleading since it depicts white sand beaches, wind-swept palm trees, and an attack helicopter - elements that were totally absent from the film. In fact, the movie's poster is about the closest it came to resembling the game.Fifth, the entire story was mucked up from start to finish. About the only similarity was Dr. Krieger developing genetic experiments on an island (and only just off the coast of Washington state!). Everything else was a total cluster. Jack's guiding CIA contact throughout the game, Doyle, was completely missing in the film. I suppose they axed his character when they axed the idea of keeping the CIA involved as part of the plot. This required a total re-write of the story to become another "my Uncle needs me!" idiotic plot. The added characters like Max and Chernov and the other mercenary leader were moronic. Their acting and dialogue was below elementary, and they added nothing to the film. Sixth, from the point-of-view of the screenplay there was little to be praised in this film. Whole scenes should have been edited out of this film that added nothing to the tense action atmosphere that should have pervaded the film. The whiney couple at the beginning and end of the film, the arguing scene between the dock-master and his "wife?", the idiotic and whiney food delivery man, the entire 20 minutes of Jack running from a super-soldier, the forcibly inserted "sex" scene between Jack and Val (which was totally unnecessary and made no sense), the meaningless dialogue between Krieger and Val, the pointless scene between Krieger and the visiting general, and on and on I could go.In summary, there was little this film got right. As a movie in and of itself, it ranks among the lowest of the D action flicks. As an adaptation of the game, it was a farce that should have never left the screenwriters' table. I cannot even believe that CryTek agreed to this film being made. It was such a departure from the game's plot and a horrible misrepresentation of it. Avoid wasting an hour and a half of your time and watch something else! Better yet, go play Far Cry the game and you'll have a much better experience.

So, I saw that this movie was rated 3 on IMDb so I thought; it will be bad! I watched this movie and it was a good B film, it is not a masterpiece but it is pretty decent, i mean, i have seen a lot of other films that are rated 4,5/5 and they are definitely worse than this. Good plot and pretty action sequences, maybe the problem is its title "Far Cry" I played the game and I noticed that it is completely different but if you forget the title, there are no problems at all. Probably people rated it 1,2 or 3 because of Uwe Boll, it is obvious that people hate him so they dislike its films by deduction. Uwe Boll made bad movies but this deserves at least a 5! So i recommend to people that hate Boll, just watch the film and try to be honest.

Ironically there is some redeemable parts to this film where Boll seemed to attempt to pay homage to the original video game (one of my all time favourites) but Uwe Boll makes films in a very distinct manner and here's how it is done. He plays a video game, gets excited and loves it and then runs outside to his backyard and 'plays' Far Cry, or BloodRayne, or House of The Dead with his friends only add the fact that he is rich and films it. It's like watching a child imagine real life video games. Far Cry truly is the perfect recipe for an action film but a lot of video games are like that and few of them ever translate into a kick-butt action flick let alone be held back by B-Movie actors and a hack like Boll behind the scenes. The writers took the more lame elements of the video game to try and incorporate them into the script. The idea of the 'Predator' soldiers was far fetched in the game let alone to try and translate to film. While the idea of making them super human does look cool in some situations, it doesn't help. The script is just simply awful and while that aspect can't necessarily be attributed to Boll, he should know when he sees crap.Til Schweiger looks the part. The ripped muscled chiseled features of an action star that has a little Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Stathom, Sly Stallone all mixed into one with a dash of Dolph Lundgren and he might be a good actor but this role does nothing for him. He is a joke and looking the part doesn't even come close to carrying the movie. Emmanuelle Vaugier is a stunning beauty and I've seen her in CSI: NY and I know she's a decent actress. She does okay in this film given how craptastic the script is and I think her and Schweiger could have chemistry but nothing helps them get to that point. She is fantastically hot though. If you were looking to cast an evil German scientist with a B-Movie spin Udo Kier would be the only choice. He is the ultimate looking villain and could have been good possibly if once again the script is crap. He is an utter joke as the lead villain. In my opinion there is literally one redeemable character and performance in the film. Ralf Moeller (think of him as a low budget Schwarzenegger) is a powerhouse of a figure and does a great job playing the quiet security guard who is transformed into a monstrous predator. His battles are the coolest, he looks the coolest and he is the best character in the film. Maybe its just a lucky shot by Moeller or maybe they happened to write him better but he is the only redeemable character.I think I trashed Uwe Boll enough to get the point across that he will ruin almost any video game and keep doing it with money, hence three Bloodrayne films, and a new Dungeon Siege sequel on the way. Lets look at the trilogy of terror that is the writing team for Far Cry. Michael Roesch, Peter Scheerer, Masaji Takei are literally Uwe Boll flunkies. They have written or worked on almost all of his crappiest films so I guess you can only expect so much. No matter what I say the team will continue making films and likely about video games so hopefully they don't get any more good licenses. Until then I will keep sitting through them hoping they finally translate something redeemable. 3/10
