Crappy film
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

We're too harsh on comedy titles, we want them to be perfect and epic. It is okay for comedies to be silly, stupid and out there at times. We never hold the same standard for thrillers we watch the same formula plots over and over again and still be okay with it. But with comedies oh no why did they do that , its stupid. As apposed to the 1 min hacker of pentagon in every film. It's a genuinely funny the story of two life long friends and magicians who share a magical act and are threatened by the modern chris angelisc magician played by Jim Carrey. I cannot think of another person playing the role. A story of a long lost love for magic dusted by fame and money over the years. Steve carrel is his awkward a bit toned down 'The Office' self trying to get back on his feet and getting a little help along the way. A great Sunday watch with the family.
What is happening to comedy? This is another "comedy" which hopes to get a whole movie's worth of entertained with just an opening comedic premise followed by an hour of utter chaos. This movie starts with a workable comedic premise, but after a few minutes, it devolves into a long (very long) slog through a hodge podge of unrelated shtick, a disappearing plot, bad taste, unfunny grossouts, juiceless sex, pointless detours, to get to a really stupid, ill conceived conclusion.Doesn't anybody view this stuff and then cut and reshoot so that the final product is coherent? Doesn't anyone involved have any pride? There was a lot of talent in this movie. Shouldn't performers have some say in what is finally released?
Better than I expected. The movie was panned by many critics and moviegoers, but it is really not that bad. Yes, was a bit silly at times and the plot is reasonably basic, but there are some incredibly hilarious scenes. Most of these scenes involve Jim Carrey. His role is only a supporting one, but he steals the show. His way-over-the-top portrayal of Steve Gray reminded me of his role of Fire Marshall Bill in In Living Colour, for me, still his funniest role. Anytime he is on screen in this movie, hilarity ensues.Steve Carrell and Steve Buscemi do okay in the lead roles. Olivia Wilde plays the straight role, and does it well, all while looking gorgeous.Alan Arkin is great as Rance Holloway. After Carrey's, his is probably the best performance of the movie. Good supporting performance from James Gandolfini and also good to see Jay Mohr, in a minor role.Worth watching.
There are some Funny Bits in this Comedy, Enough that Anyone could Hope for in a Tightly Cast, Daring Try on the Outdated Las Vegas Strip Magic Shows versus the Modern Gross Out Shenanigans of Shock and Awe Performers. The Movie moves along Quite Nicely Until the Third Act where things get a bit Silly and Over the Top with an Audience Disappearing Act that is Handled Badly and is Neither Funny or Fun. But Until We get there it is a Touching and Often Hilarious Series of Sketches and Insights into the the Magicians and the Magic they Embrace first as a Love that Requires Nurturing and Not Repetition.Jim Carrey, Steve Buscemi, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, and Olivia Wilde all Contribute Nicely in this Fairy Tale of Friendship, Ego, and Showmanship in Support of Steve Carell who could have Amped it Up for some Contrast. Underrated and Worth a Watch for an Entertaining Entry into the Difficult Task of Delivering a Tricky, Charming, and Offbeat Little Movie that is Above Average.
