Boring
It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
I had really high hopes for this film, I read the book while on holiday and the first DVD I rented when I got back was Mr Nice. I have to say it was the worst book to film that I have even seen. It missed out so much detail and the best parts of the book, it looks like it was shoot on a low budget making it even worse.I wouldn't recommend watching it if you haven't seen the book it drags on through most parts, I know its not that type of film they could of added more action to the film to keep interest but its dull and boring and would of stopped watching it if I hadn't read the book. The guys a legend but it looks as if this film was just for the money
having read the book a few times and being a big fan of Howard Marks, i had some enthusiastic anticipation for this movie.... but how disheartened i was when the end credits rolled. too much has been omitted or briefly skimmed over, and characters reduced to footnotes. in the book, McCann was a sinister yet comical recurring character, but in the film is just a slightly ridiculous caricature. i did enjoy Thewlis' performance, but the script itself is the problem.one the plus side, Ifans makes a fine Marks, resembling the man to a remarkable degree, and is reasonably charming in the role. but, once again, the script lets the film down. the bookend scenes are nice, probably the best bits, but as they are roughly a minute or so long, that doesn't really add up to a 'good movie'.overall, pretty weak and unimpressive.READ THE BOOK PEOPLE!
I have read a great deal about Howard Marx over the years and watched this film in the hope that it would meet my expectations and I was not disappointed. The film sticks pretty well to the book "Mr Nice" and although the book contains much more detail about the man & the events of his life, I thought the film did pretty well in giving you a accurate synopsis. In all if you have a liking for the "herb" then I would say that this film will give you an incite to an era that has now gone by. Portraying the romantic image that we all have of the 60's & 70's but illustrating the price that Howard payed in his chosen profession. Personally think I'll stick to the daily grind of 9 to 5!
It is with tedious inevitability that we are dragged like school children in a gallery through the (ostensibly quite interesting) life of Howard Marks. I felt like I was stoned just watching it. Time seemed to have have completely stopped functioning. Simultaneously I could see exactly what what going to happen next, whilst obtaining a massive sense of deja-vu from what had gone before. I then went to the fridge and ate everything I could find in it and began staring at stuff in my sitting room for ages and ages, mainly to avoid looking at the screen. Nothing to see here, nothing new to say. Not worth renting unless you are still impressed by a bit of grass because you're a first year Geography student from Kettering.
