The first must-see film of the year.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
The acting in this movie is really good.
The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
I will not even address the graphics element of this movie, as the film's creators themselves insist that this was the effect they were going for. If this was the best they could do, that's fine, but now what I am left with is the naked body of the film that was hiding behind the drapes of the motion capture technology: the script. This is a revenge movie with nothing new to add as far as a plot, especially in the Tamil industry. Man's family is wronged in some way, man goes undercover, man reveals himself and gets revenge on the villains. Then we have all the unnecessary plot elements that added nothing to the hero's characterization. He dances like a badass? Cool. He rides on a dolphin's nose? Cool (and literally impossible). He does yoga? Cool. But what does all this say about a character that we should be rooting for? After this entire pomp sequence, we are still left with a character (the title character, ironically enough) that is not shelled out enough and too hollow for the audience to feel any attachment to him and root for him. Then we have the whole issue of who the bad guy really is. In Rana's words, "country is more important than friendship", and we see in this nationalistic period, people are willing to go to any limit for their country. So how is Raja Mahendra not justified in poisoning in their enemy's soldiers but Rana is when he basically smuggles their main labor force out of their country? That's messed up, man. Also, Veera Mahendra seemed to be a genuinely good friend until he was betrayed, so his actions seem justified as well. So who is the real hero in all of this? It was of course Kochadaiiyaan, who performed the ultimate sacrifice of dying for the right thing. But oh wait, he was also the most poorly developed character in the movie! And then we have Princess Vadhana, who was literally only a pretty face for the dance sequences/ the subject of my nightmares. Similar things can be said for all the other supporting characters (even the nightmare part), as they did not do what they were meant to do: SUPPORT. Rana's sister had her own plot that provided nothing to the plot. Nagesh, I am so sorry. These characters were only around, it seems, for the movie to meet its run time requirements as the main plot was so insubstantial. I can guarantee that this movie would have been a failure were it not for the name Rajini attached to it. I am thankful for this movie for one reason only. It gives us a chance to step back and realize what a detrimental effect nepotism and politics has on the Tamil film industry. There are really moving and novel scripts out there and directors with a different point of view that no one wants to pay attention to because they are overshadowed be films and people like this. Let the pomp and mindless, almost religious following of Kochadaiiyaan be an example of something we should not strive for, and let us go back to making cinema, not hype.
I never expected the movie to have good graphics (Technically speaking). But it was a surprise and a Adventurous ride. I took my son along and to my surprise after watching the movie he was in tears ...! The Movie "Kochadaiiyaan" was under SO much of criticism and struggle that people who were speaking Bad about the movie..Now are wanting to see the movie but their Ego is holding them back. Nevermind those people will regret for not watching it in theater.Movie - ***** Music and BG score- ***** Animation Quality-*** Screen play - ***** There was a great effort taken by PentaMedia about 12 years Back...He burnt his fingers first and Thanks to that team of guys who actually helped to grow this Amazing Animation Industry. Its Now The Lady who has taken this Massive effort , People just sit back without moving their - and comment on every move that a Celebrities family does...But in-spite of all that rubbish This Team is a Winner.*** RAJNI WILL REMAIN SUPER STAR FOREVER ***
Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin has pulled two impossible feats, making India's first motion capture animation movie successfully and also achieving a disaster with Rajinikanth-an impossible feat.Kochadaiiyaan, has everything going good for it from the time Rajinikanth gave his nod. An ensemble cast of Deepika Padukone, Jackie Shroff, Sobhana, Sharat Kumar and Nazir, plus Eros stepping in for distribution and finance and above all Rajini fans giving the movie their full support. Plus the movie had state of art technicians working on it and they managed to achieve the best of the best, from the dimple on Deepika's cheeks to her cleavage and to the wrinkles on Rajinikanth's fingers, everything was taken and displayed in the minute detail.Alas! With all this the makers forgot the primary ingredient which makes up every movie-THE STORY. After you finish marveling at the technical brilliance, you start looking for the story, which clearly disappoints and for the first time ever, you have people yawning and stretching in a Rajinikanth Movie. The movie is 118 mins (2 mins short of 2 hrs) but it seems so long drawn that it might as well have been 4 hours long.Rana is a trustworthy general in Kalingapuri's army and his strategy of including POWs into the army gives good results and kingdom achieves lots of victories. Rana then decides to vanquish Kottaipatanam, a neighboring enemy state and marches towards it with the entire army. Suddenly Rana defects taking the entire army with him. It is revealed that Rana was an undercover soldier from Kottaipatanam.Back home,Sengodagan (Sharat Kumar) the prince falls for Rana's sister Yamuna (Rukmini) and the hero uses his charm and has Rishikodagan (Nasser) the king agree for the wedding. Rishikodagan performs the marriage but banishes Sengodagan as he dared to love a common woman. Vadhana, The princess (Deepika Padukone) is head over heels in love with Rana and decides to confront her father. At the very moment, an assassination attempt happens on Rishikodagan and Vadhana foils it and surprise the assassin is Rana, who has been plotting revenge for the unjust execution of his father Kochadaiiyaan. As written above, the animation is flawless, everything was taken care to the T. You even have the late Nagesh in a comic role and the song picturizations are simply awesome especially the peacock dance with Deepika Padukone and the amazing pre interval fight sequence between Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone needs a special mention. All in all if Soundarya had taken proper care in the story department, we would have had an instant classic. Only pray that she does a better job in the sequel (oh yes! We were warned about that in the end credits)
Firstly, it would be appropriate to congratulate director Soundarya Rajnikanth for bringing such a unique technology to Indian screen. The way Rajnikanth's introduction, his first song and fight sequences have been designed are marvelous. Kochadaiiyaan's flash back, and the entire war sequences in the climax have been designed and executed supremely. Dialogues mouthed by Rajnikanth in the pre-climax episodes, are awesome and make Rajnni fans go crazy. A R Rahman's music is yet another plus for this movie. The way he elevates the story with his songs, only adds to the flow of the film. The way veteran actor Nagesh has been recreated is quite good
