To me, this movie is perfection.
Good concept, poorly executed.
Absolutely the worst movie.
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Before we go deeper into this - I can appreciate this movie for trying to be different and is honestly one of the most underrated films on Netflix's arsenal of 'original films'. Right off the bat though, we know Wheelman is short thrill ride of a heist gone wrong / thriller film with a lonesome and surprisingly dissident driver helming the wheel. What the film really hammers home is the distinct POV, whereby ninety percent of the film lays on the wheelman inside the car and the camera never shies from leaving the car unless its absolutely necessary to. This great use of camera work to keep the story contained, makes the viewer understand what is going on through the protagonist's mind and how to empathize with him, without trying to dilute the scene with unnecessary details and external plot devices. We know that there is a driver, and by this he drives the story literally and metaphorically to only unhinge details as the stakes increase, and with that alone, this movie stands firmly on its own. The film builds a great character with personal stakes that don't pertain to trying to save the world or commenting himself to being the good guy. The Wheelman understands he is a bad guy trying to do something with good intentions, i.e. the Robin Hood scenario. The acting, music and cinematography are great for what its worth, albeit the repetitiveness of the car interior does lag a little bit, but the film is paced evenly enough that it never feels too extraneous. The plot, and character building and plot progression feel more or less at par with what you would expect. There are only a few bends and twists, but with a run time under 90 minutes, its hard to build in a lot of sequences that aren't too integral to the main plot. All in all though, I feel fairly content with the movie, and was more than satisfied having never heard anything about it previous to watching this. The short run time keeps it short and sweet so that you can enjoy a film with fresh POV on a mostly retread story and being mildly satisfied. By no stretch is the film a masterpiece, but there's no reason not to recommend it to anyone looking for something different when you have a hankering for it. Overall I would give Wheelman a 72/100 and suggest it again for someone looking for something a little different.
No not Ryan Gosling nor Mark Dacascos (Kudos if you know what I'm talking about with the latter without googling). Also nothing to do with the game (Wheelman) Vin Diesel did voice many years ago. Having this all out of the way, this movie could also be called "Car(s)". We do stick to cars most of the time and often even inside them. While that may sound dubious or maybe uninteresting, think about the movie "Locke" with Tom Hardy, but with a lot more action attached to it. Does it all make sense? Not really. Will you care? Well I can't answer that. I can tell you that if you don't mind logic issues and very convenient happenings (coincidence you say?), then you will be entertained watching this. Running time is short enough and Grillo carries the movie ... well drives it to the finish line ...
I can't believe the low rating of this movie so I had to write this short review. This is a pure example of how a low budget movie can leave a proper impression with the viewer. Well written character driven story. Slow built suspense and a perfectly paced story. Frank Grillo carries this movie on his own. And this is the directorial debut of Jeremy Rush who also wrote this movie. A serious talent! I would have given it 10 stars but I noticed a serious editing mistake. You can figure it out yourselves... :) Still worthy of 9 stars. I am reminded of a Tom Hardy movie 'Locke'. If you enjoyed 'Wheelman', I recommend the latter.
"Wheelman" is just another lackluster film to throw into Netflix growing collection of them. It tries to be clever and unique but it really isn't, I've seen films like this before, and I've seen much better films like this before, "Wheelman" is uninspiring and quite frankly, rubbish. The first point of concern before I even saw the film was the runtime, 1 hour 22 minutes, now I can tell you any film that short isn't going to be anything special; my second point of concern was the cast, I'd never heard of anyone performing in the film, all a bunch of unknowns. So going in to watching I was quite skeptical, and I wasn't proven wrong. Basically the film is about a man who is driving around a city after being blackmailed by an unknown assailant, he has to perform a robbery with two other blokes before leaving them behind, there's another bloke involved called Clay..., the whole film is a disjointed mess and annoying to follow.I hated the fact that there was no background music, no score at all, and every shot was always focused on our main character, no matter what that guy was doing, and these annoying, relentless camera angles were starting to make me feel a bit giddy to be honest. Netflix has a knack for making exceptionally poor films, you'd think for a company that has the money, the backing and the influence that Netflix has, they'd be churning out better quality productions, but obviously not..., here's hoping that they may amend their ways in the future, otherwise we'll all have to endure garbage like this indefinitely.
