Freedom
Two men separated by 100 years are united in their search for freedom. In 1856 a slave, Samuel Woodward and his family, escape from the Monroe Plantation near Richmond, Virginia. A secret network of ordinary people known as the Underground Railroad guide the family on their journey north to Canada. They are relentlessly pursued by the notorious slave hunter Plimpton. Hunted like a dog and haunted by the unthinkable suffering he and his forbears have endured, Samuel is forced to decide between revenge or freedom. 100 years earlier in 1748, John Newton the Captain of a slave trader sails from Africa with a cargo of slaves, bound for America. On board is Samuel's great grandfather whose survival is tied to the fate of Captain Newton. The voyage changes Newton's life forever and he creates a legacy that will inspire Samuel and the lives of millions for generations to come.

That was an excellent one.
Let's be realistic.
Good start, but then it gets ruined
One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.
Samuel (Cuba Goodling jr. ) and his family are seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad in 1856. They are aided by Thomas Garrett (Michael Goodwin) and a host of Quakers who don't care that they are breaking the Fugitive Slave Act. A man named Plimpton (William Sadler) has been hired to find and return the family to the Richmond Plantation. Along the way they meet Frederick Douglas (Byron Utley). In a subplot, a century earlier, Samuel's great-grandfather is being brought over as a slave by John Newton (Bernhard Forcher) who would later renounce slave trading and write "Amazing Grace." His conversion is not an accurate representation, which occurred while his ship was en route to Ireland, but this version makes better drama and inspiration. The acting was low key. The performances while solid, were not outstanding. This is an inspiring emotional film about hope and redemption. "Family Approved
Great movie... great music. True historical facts are revealed at the end. It's the first movie I've ever seen that's specifically about the Underground Railroad. Beautiful scenery and costuming. At times I felt that I was watching a Broadway show... which is a definite thumbs up. Don't listen to a negative review on this movie as the subject matter is too important! Some parts of the movie are tough to watch, for sure. Learning about the person that wrote "Amazing Grace" was fascinating. No spoilers here! You can't help but fall in love with Philip Boykin!! A great performance and a great voice! Bravo!! I'll definitely recommend this movie to friends. I'm a bit surprised I didn't hear of it when it came out. I guess it was a sleeper. (I've written 9 lines... my first review. I think IMDb should change it's requirement of 10 lines to leave a review. It's too much. Make it 6, 7, or 8 lines max.)
A family of runaway slaves head for Canada on the Underground Railroad, along the way, the eldest tells the story of how the family came to America and how they first found faith. It feels like a passion project for Cuba Gooding Jr. who produced the project as well as acted in it. It was worth it.The movie does not hold back on what a dark time slavery was, which made it all more inspiring watching this family escape from it. Along the way, meeting such famous figures as Fredrick Douglas. I'm not to big on religion, so the whole Christian thing did not appeal to me at all. Cuba plays a man who gave up on God (which I feel is understandable for a slave) While the rest of his family believes that God is guiding them to freedom. I also was disinterested in the sub story of a the ship captain that reluctantly brought slaves into the States. The whole thing at times acted like a bad Broadway musical which was unattractive.Overall, it's hard to find a movie about slavery enjoyable, but I did. It was a very realistic look at the subject and worth taking a look at.
A powerful MOVIE, That gives, US a look into Life in the EARLY 1800's. FREEDOM is the HUMAN RIGHT of all.. SLAVERY is the INJUSTICE that many were given. FAITH and HOPE was the Inspiration, To Change the Course of History... AMAZING GRACE, HOW Sweet the sound.... WE all can do OUR BIT, To Change a World, Where SLAVERY IS Still A HUMAN EVIL, THAT has To be ADDRESSED, with a HUMAN RIGHTS AGENDA.... In Our World we see so much injustice, our Voice must be heard. This Movie, has the inspiration to help where we can, to tell our Government, that FREEDOM/PEACE is our only real Progress, for our Country to instill in all of us. Also the rest of the World.
