This is How Movies Should Be Made
A Major Disappointment
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
Don't believe those reviews saying this is bad in every way – that's just people annoyed by the useless ending. But even more, don't believe those who tell you this is worth watching or a good example of British horror. It starts with dramatic promise: the main character isn't sympathetic, but we can see his problems. It's very low budget, but reasonably acted and put together and the opening may well suck you in. But as things develop, the plot makes less and less sense. Why do people not call for help or leave the building when they have the chance? Why do the police behave so unrealistically at almost every turn? OK, this is horror, and, for those who liked this film anyway, horror is about horror, not having a script that makes sense. Certainly poor plotting is a feature of the genre and movies like Alien, which are perfectly thought through, are quite rare. The huge problem here is the ending. Lots of questions are raised along the way. Will the teacher be able to come to terms with the requirements of his job? – seems unlikely as he seems to care nothing for either the kids or his subject. (His lessons are delivered in a low monotone with back turned to the class.) Will he keep some kind of worthwhile relationship with his daughter – seems unlikely as he hits her, picks on her and he's such a loser. Will he get back together with his estranged wife? – seems unlikely as he's such a ditto. We may or may not care about any of this – his revolting treatment of a pupil in the opening scene is enough to put anyone off him for good. But if we have any interest in the film at all, we will want to know who these mysterious hooded intruders are. The title (F refers to the failing grade, the lowest a kid can receive in the UK) wants to suggest they are pupils or former pupils, let down by the educational system. But this just isn't possible because they operate with the effectiveness and athleticism of highly-trained ninjas. Twice, a single one of them is enough to take out a police officer who has seen them coming. I couldn't think of any convincing explanation, and was looking forward to finding out which unconvincing one would be offered When the film just ended. Without answering anything at all.I'm not one who wants every little loose end tied up. In fact in some ways, the film could have ended a couple of minutes sooner, as the teacher struggles with the impossible choice between helping his wife or daughter. But some explanation has to be offered for the attack, which is 90% of the whole film. To create an impossible situation and then just stop, is far too easy and utterly pathetic. Don't waste your time on this. If you do enjoy the opening, you'll just end up frustrated and annoyed. Try something like Wilderness, with similar low budget and delinquent youth theme, which really delivers in the UK horror genre.
Exceptionally good horror-thriller, because---there was little on screen violence; one never actually sees the faces of the mass murderers; there was a very clear reason why the murderers were doing what they were doing, although the murderers themselves do not state it.-----------------------At a public school (Wittering College in the UK) Robert Anderson, a tough teacher, is rather direct about how horrible a student's work is. The student slugs the teacher in the nose, drawing a lot of blood. Instead of standing up for him, the school asks him to go on leave until the student graduates. The student's parents were threatening to sue the teacher for belittling remarks, claiming that more than justified physical assault and battery.Robert does indeed come back. He falls behind in posting marks, and other teachers complain about too much noise and too much cursing emanating from his class. His boss Sarha warns him about rumours concerning his bringing alcohol to school. The unions protect him somewhat. Sarah also warns him about sending e-mails. The one he wrote was merely a statement of publicly available crime statistics. .He finally gets provoked enough that he assigns a student detention. It was his own daughter Kate, and he's in a separated state. Perhaps this was not the best idea. Perhaps worst of all, it's night and someone wants to spread some fear. Robert makes a large error by being provoked by Kate during detention, and he slaps her. She takes off.Somebody attacks and kills one of the security guards. Kate discovers that the telephones are down when she tries to call for a ride. Robert gets a milkshake thrown at him from someone outside while he's inside. They leave the message 'Ur dead' on the wall outside. Robert advises the librarian to leave, but she ignores him. The intruder starts giving her some uncertainty. Kate hangs out in the toilet, and her boy friend catches up with her.Sarah tells Robert to go home after Kate tells her that Robert hit her. Everything else wrong is just ignored, such as Kate's boyfriend being in the girls' toilet with Kate. James meets Sarah and both of them agree on ignoring Robert. Nicky gets attacked in the women's change area by two faceless (hooded) attackers. Robert's at his car when he sees the security guard's abandoned flashlight with blood on it. Sarah instructs James not to let Robert comes back in. Nice. Sarah calls Helen and asks her to come get Kate. Immediately thereafter Sarah hears breaking glass and goes to investigate. The hooded intruders get close to her and she runs, but cannot hide. They kill her. That was certainly an expected outcome. Robert gets in, finds Sarah dead, then calls the police. They studiously lecture him and ignore anything he has to say.Kate decides not to wait for her mother. She goes to Jake's car, then sees the hooded figure. Jake's listening to rap, and does not notice her. She runs; he eventually goes inside the school to find her. A male teacher in his prime finds Kate, and tries to get some truth out of her. Then he goes looking for the miscreants. Poor guy; he realises they have flanked him, and he is going to get at best a big load of pain. Jake's whimpering leads him to one place where he is attacked and killed.Robert goes to James and eventually convinces him that Sarah is dead. James keeps calling his security mate Brian, but he was the first one murdered by the rampaging teens. When they find what's left of Nicky, James freaks out; Robert barely keeps James calm. They find one of the murderers in the art room; James runs and locks himself in nearby. This leaves Robert in with the bad guys. The cops finally arrive, but do not believe that students can be all that menacing. This puts them at a terrible disadvantage.-----Scores------Cinematography: 7/10 A bit dim, with the wretched colour from fluorescent lighting. That's probably accurate, though. The occasional blurriness and jerky motion do not help.Sound: 10/10 Quite effective.Acting: 5/10 Robert Anderson and Ruth Gemmell were fairly convincing. Eliza Bennett, Finlay Robertson, and Juliet Aubrey I could have done without.Screenplay: 10/10 Brilliant. Suspenseful to the end, with no supernatural elements. We never actually see the faces of the mass murderers, for instance.
This film looked quite good when i first learned about it but as soon as i watched it i thought that was the most wasted 1 and a half hours of my life. I thought the plot was dreadful and how many schools have security guards anyway? I know for a fact i am not the only person who thought it was crap as i leaned it to my friend the next day and he said exactly the same as me. I am glad i only paid £1 for this rubbish as i would be mad if i would of paid more for such a rubbish film. Usually i enjoy films as i own over 350 but this was dreadful. I did not only feel disappointed by this film but i also felt quite uneasy about this film as people are murdering school teachers for no other reason than for fun. Even a poor security guard is locked in a bin and set on fire and i felt who would do that. I know it is only a film but i found it disturbing. This film is one of Britain's worst films ever made. Anyone who is planning on watching this film should have second thoughts about this film.
I found out about his one late last year! Was a tough DVD to find in hmv because of it's uninspiring name. But got it & watched it!A Pretty good film! A rare type of film at that! A British one as well making it stand out! The kills were intense! Like the security man being burned alive inside the wheelie bin. It was very Gory & pretty interesting not to mention Extremely Brutal!! The story line was OK. Not giving us much as to why the attack! Although following what happened from the very beginning, it seems like it was revenge for how the teacher treated on of his students! But it could have been explained abit more & gave us an idea as to why! Instead of us having to 'guess' what happened. The ending was a little disappointing! Considering that I wanted to know what the motivation was & if they got caught etc! But wasn't too bad, a good cliff hanger but it overall was a great film! 9/10
