it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
This is an astonishing documentary that will wring your heart while it bends your mind
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
I happen to think What's Up, Doc? is hilarious, but I think there are people out there who won't like it. I love Peter Bogdanovich comedies; he pays homage to the old screwball style and manages to keep it modern and fresh. And it's a really big compliment for me to like his films since I can't stand the screwball comedies of the 1930s!Dreamboat Ryan O'Neal stars as a wooden musicologist, thrown together by sheer coincidence with Barbra Streisand, a quirky troublemaker. They share hilariously fast banter, awkward situations, only-in-Hollywood screwball scenes, and . . . luggage? Yes, and you'll have to watch the movie to understand it. Barbra relentlessly pursues Ryan, even though he clearly wants nothing to do with him and is engaged to Madeline Kahn, and the absurdity of the film sets the tone for her madcap antics. If you're not sure if you'll split your sides laughing or roll your eyes and turn it off, watch the meet-cute clip in the beginning, in which Barbra, in her iconic houndstooth cap, utters the title line. If you laugh, you'll like the rest of the movie. And if you decide to stick with it, you'll get to see Ryan O'Neal make fun of Love Story!
While he is mostly remembered nowadays for directing two black-and-white Academy Award winning dramas during the early 1970s, Peter Bogdanovich also helmed two of the funniest movies ever made. One of those is 'Noises Off...' with Michael Caine; this is the other one. 'What's Up, Doc?' is hardly a flawless motion picture and not all the jokes work (an extended chase scenes runs a little too long; Kenneth Mars is a tad too over-the-top). The gags that work though are simply sensational and the film has several wonderfully kooky moments, like several guests at a reception all meeting under the table - which causes one of the waiters to question just what wine they have been serving at that table! In essence, 'What's Up, Doc?' is Bogdanovich's valentine to the screwball comedies of Howard Hawks - particularly 'Bringing Up Baby' - with Ryan O'Neal and Barbra Streisand doing well playing very similar characters to those inhabited by Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in the Hawks film. Not often cited as an actress with range, Streisand is never less than totally impressive rambling coherent dialogue left, right and centre whilst always feeling like the spontaneous free-spirit that her character is meant to be. Golden Globe nominated Madeline Kahn arguably has the best performance here though as O'Neal's overbearing wife to-be. Funny as the film is throughout, Bogdanovich saves his very best gag for last as Streisand recites the tagline from O'Neal's 'Love Story' to him, leading to a reaction that needs to be seen for itself.
Now this is one movie I wish I could have seen in the theater! Accompanied by popcorn and something to drink, what fun this would be! I have seen this on television and also on video. This is one film that takes superb actors who know their craft well and places them in the zaniest mix-ups but also assumes that the viewer has some intelligence. The main protagonist is a professor - a musicologist (basically a musical historian) - who meets up with someone who would be known as a "professional student" in today's vernacular. Mix-ups ensue, hotel rooms burn, and most importantly, look-alike overnight bags - 4 in all - in a loud plaid color - get mixed up. From secret government underwear to precious jewels, I tried to keep track of which bag was where the last time I watched this movie. I couldn't do it! I lost track about 30 minutes in.This is a funny movie that I recommend for families to watch. (One caution: If you don't want your little ones to see Barbara Streisand taking a bubble-bath or come out of the bathroom wearing nothing but a towel, then maybe select something else. Even so, this movie is G rated, believe it or not.)This is one of the great films of all time - just because it is fun, funny, and intelligent. I like to watch it if I need a good laugh.
Just purchased the DVD as we wanted to see this again. Still fresh and entertaining as ever. And after using my search tool on all the prior reviews here, nobody mentioned the seagulls, which is one of my favorite parts. The comic detail in this movie is incredible. And at the end of the chase scene where all the modes of transportation are going off the end of the dock and into the bay, a line of seagulls viewing this action do a double take! This happens pretty fast, so if you are not paying attention you may miss it. These are real seagulls standing in a line, apparently just hanging around nearby. Apparently the film crew spent quite a bit of time and film until they captured most of these birds turning their heads in unison. Thanks to all who participated in creating this masterpiece for lightening our lives. We needed that!
