Stop the World: I Want to Get Off
Stop the World: I Want to Get Off
The Anthony Newley/Leslie Bricusse London and Broadway musical hit Stop the World, I Want to Get Off is given literal treatment in this filmization. Newley stars as Littlechap, whose allegorical rise to success is countered by the instability of his private life. Like the play, the film is staged impressionistically, with Newley decked out in mime makeup and periodically stopping the action to address the audience, and with all the women in his life -- German, American and "Typically English" -- played by a single actress (Millicent Martin, taking over from the stage version's Anna Quayle). In Wizard of Oz fashion, the play itself is lensed in color, while the brief prologue, showing the actors preparing for their performance, is in black-and-white. The production includes such standards (and perennial audition pieces) as What Kind of Fool Am I? and Gonna Build a Mountain.

To me, this movie is perfection.

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

There were some great moments and ideas here...but I just kept thinking,"This would have been better on stage." Plus, it was a film filled with decent melodies but no show stopper. Not a bad metaphor.

I genuinely do not know what I think of this film. I am not sure whether to like it or not. I think that the songs are good. I have seen clips from the stage show and I do admire the Jason Robert Brown score however I just wasn't a fan of the particular outline/plot of the movie. I surprised myself. I usually like the starts with a song, ends with a song format, but this film didn't make me go 'wow'. I thought that the set and costume designs were good and lifted and dampened the mood when necessary, but I just feel that there is something about this movie which I have either haven't figured out yet or maybe just haven't watched enough times to fully appreciate.Overall, I'm on the fence.

Recently I saw a couple of other films starring Anne Kendrick, I was not very impressed with them and so I got the same result for this one as well, even worse. I don't like musicals, especially not the modern ones, well, mostly. This is a short story that comes around 30 minutes, but with those nonsense songs, it became a feature film. Seems a few people liked it, I think they had a reason, but to me it was very boring. There was no any decent performances, all I saw was the film characters singing facing in one direction. Maybe they were looking at the lyrics board. I suggest don't go for it seeking a normal romance-comedy. If you like the musical, you might enjoy it, other than that, I don't see this would satisfy any average guy. So no offense for those who liked it, but this is totally a skippable film the year.3/10

If your like me you saw Anna Kendrick on the trailer or on the cover and said oh I have to watch that ha ha, but just a heads up I was not aware that the whole movie was 100% musical. I am glad I kept watching it tho because it was beautifully made. Only one thing that really bothered me was the ending, why cut it off there? With no explanation on if she moved on. I know its a expected routine when it come to movies but I wanted a little more then the fact that she couldn't find her path in her career and he left her THE END, then again why have the same story on in on perhaps that ending is what made this movie so great and explaining the hardship of life and the joy. All in all Anna Kendrick is amazing!
