Surprisingly incoherent and boring
A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
It's a not so bad French werewolf movie. Still, it is not on the same level like the real important French terror movies from the last years (Martyrs, High Tension, Inside, Frontiers, etc.). Only the 'strong'-female lead cast is completely annoying in her self-obsession and the extreme shaky camera can drive normal movie goers insane. I don't know why producers/directors/photographers have permanently the feeling that found-footage inserts and extreme-shaky POV-shoots should be somehow 'modern'. The too erratic camera and this permanent 'strong'-female lead focus in the script (which is basically hidden feministic ideology & propaganda => together with the bad leading actress) ruins unfortunately this movie, but besides these flaws the movie is not so bad.
WER is another modern day werewolf story with some good stuff to recommend it. This is one of those cold and clinical horror films with lots of scenes either set in the dark or in steel laboratories, so that everything is black and grey. The tale is a grim one with no happy endings or the like; instead bloodshed and murder are the order of the day in this one.Despite being a US-made movie, this has a European feel to it, being filmed in Romania. Police are investigating a massacre and looking into a local weirdo who was found in the vicinity. Much of the running time takes the form of a police procedural investigation, but gradually things become more horrific as the truth is uncovered. There are some very gruesome scenes here, including a bit with broken glass that'll have anyone in their right mind wincing. The acting isn't the strongest, but the film works well in the end by being so relentlessly nihilistic, and with that nihilism comes real power.
Wow! Usually I'm pretty hesitant about vampire and werewolf horror movies because I've just never found those kinds of creatures scary. This film has definitely gone beyond my expectations. I love it. The acting is phenomenal and the storyline intriguing. While predictable in some parts (especially with its use of jumpscares), I found myself thoroughly enjoying seeing how every moment, expected or not, played out anyway. I also really liked the aspect of A.J. Cook's character being a lawyer and how that leads her into getting involved. I'm pretty new to the horror movie genre, but I thought that was a pretty interesting take. In general, I appreciated her character a lot. She is set up as intelligent and compassionate, so I thought her actions were very believable and realistic, even if some viewers might think she acted silly and irresponsible. The other characters are relatively nuanced too, in my opinion. They had flaws, they made mistakes, and they also showed redeeming aspects. I won't go into more detail because I'm really trying to avoid spoilers, but I just really liked how they were all written. Speaking of the writing, I thought it was fine: realistic and natural. Yes, some of the dialogue seemed a little funny, but it didn't actually take me out of the viewing experience. I don't have much to say about the setting and filmography, to be honest, because I don't know much about that. All in all, Wer is a great modern horror movie! I still don't find werewolves scary, but I *was* scared for the characters in the movie. Creative and entertaining from start to finish, it certainly blows most of the rest of the films clogging the horror movie genre out of the water.
To start of with: this is NOT a found footage film. Some footage is found of the brutal slaying of a family on vacation in France, and it's analyzed and sets of the rest of the proceedings. The film is presented in a documentary style, nothing to do with found footage..And this doesn't make any difference since it's quite a brilliant film. Or maybe it does since some of those found footage films tend to take pretty illogical steps just to keep the FF gimmick alive. This is just a great, extremely original and thankfully very realistic take on the werewolf saga, slowly built up as a mystery murder thriller."Experienced" experts are brought in to examine this apparent brutal animal attack, however who could be prepared for what's to follow. Okay, the ending might have been slightly predictable but it is done with such vigor and ferociousness it's still highly enjoyable and very exciting to watch.Very well done, very well played by all, absolutely stunning make up- and gore effects, an excellent choice to let it play out in a different country and oh so original. It reminded me of that other very original genre film of late: "Afflicted". Iff you enjoyed that, you will absolutely love this! 8/10
