Excellent adaptation.
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
A couple of memorable lines. Iconic. But it doesn't make me feel lucky, and I've watched it more than once. It doesn't get better with repeated viewing. I'd have thought it was financed by the LA Police Department, if it wasn't for the ending, which seems to be based on High Noon, the conclusion of which reportedly angered John Wayne so much. The recent reviews of this film seem to have got it just about right. There is something dissatisfying about its plot and narrative account. Although there is a basic theme involving the pursuit of a maniac killer, it is also structured round a disconnected series of episodes designed to portray a cop who is stressed and driven beyond endurance by the rules and regulations of the society in which he operates. There appears to be no solution to this conflict. The viewer is left at a loss. Siegel's next film, Charley Varrick is more entertaining.
Plot; San Francisco detective Harry Callahan gets caught in a game of cat and mouse with a deranged serial sniper. The zeitgeist of the era certainly informs this first entry in Eastwood's Dirty Harry saga, but far less so than its reputation. The cultural clutter is certainly there on the margins, but at it its core Dirty Harry is a reasonably well made thriller anchored by Eastwood's steely turn as the titular character and Andy Robinson's deranged Scorpio killer. I think the movie might've worked a bit better had the latter had a clearer ideology and objective, but Robinson sells it with his unhinged performance.
"Inspector Harry Callahan" (Clint Eastwood) is a detective for the San Francisco Police Department who has just been assigned to a case involving a psychopathic killer who goes by the nickname of "Scorpio" (Andrew Robinson) and has demanded payment from the city or he will kill again. In addition to the new assignment, Inspector Callahan has also been given a new partner named "Chico" (Reni Santoni) who he is tasked with training as well. And if that wasn't bad enough it appears that management within the police department has adopted a new approach which frowns upon "Dirty Harry's" brutal--but effective--tactics. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a good movie when it first came out over 45 years ago and it remains very entertaining even today. That being said, for those viewers who might enjoy a movie of this type then I heartedly recommend it and I have rated it accordingly. Above average.
Dirty Harry is one of the most iconic role of Clint Easthood and in film in general and a far as police movies go is one of the oldest and the best even though it is at the time of that review forty five years old! Here I won't spoil the movie, for you have to see it, because it rocks hard and the action is even harder rather I will write down the significance of Dirty Harry for the film industry and then a focus to the genres in which the impact was more apparent. And here we go!Firstly the movie is a bit like a western, logical for Clint before he became a hardcore cop he was one of the most bad ass cowboys in movie history. So from letting that type of character die out along with the westerns they adapt it into the modern (seventies) age. Keep in mind that this is the early seventies and back then the anti-war movement against the Vietnam War was at its peak, the crime rate was increasing at an alarming speed and the audience need for blood in general was at an all time low. In short a movie, which made a violent policeman a hero, should had been shoot from the sky. But why that didn't happened?Firstly Harry Kallachan (yes I know his surname) and his unorthodox and cynical attitude mirrored the view of many people back then for the government which seemed unable to do protect them from crime and domestic abuse, despite the strong outraged by Peace promoting and Feminist organizations at the time, for its raw character and as they said fascist behavior against the law and the rights of a person. Also in my point of view that backlash may help the film to make almost nine times its budget of 4 million dollars, for least be real when you here when you her so much hate for some piece of art ,then you are going to see it in order to determine yourself how good or bad it is. The same happen with Batman v Superman, X-men Apocalypse and all the Transfomer movies! Now to the two focus parts: 1. The crime fighting in movies. Before Dirty Harry the crime movies were, for the most part, tales of good versus evil with a little gun- fight in order to remind the audience that they aren't watching a kids film. After it and its brothers of the French Connection (the original of 1971) ,a Clockwork Orange and of course The Godfather opened the crime depiction to more Grey areas were the protagonist lacks some characteristics of the hero types, in short he becomes an antihero and the villain has values that makes you like him! 2.Vigilante justice. Now that is also the most important influence in my view because a man taking justice to its own hands what completely out of question up to that point, with the hippy movement and what we said before. But after its success many more people went to give their take to the way of vigilante. What we got was films like The Taxi Driver, Death Wish and if you go farther in time you get the Batman films series,2012 Dredd The Crow, the films of Kill Bill, V for Vendeta and the awesome television crime series of Daredevil ,Arrow and Jessica Jones. To put it simple no Dirty Harry, no vigilante movies and no superhero films and series for what are these people but judge, juries and executioners? This my take to the legacy of officer Callahan actions and impact to popular culture ,I hope that this analyses will make you watch it and then spread the word.
