If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
good back-story, and good acting
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
When I was little I was obsessed with this movie. From what I can remember, this movie was very well done. My little brother is named after this movie's title character. I'll probably rewatch this movie and give it a more detailed review at a later date. Right now I'll just say that just thinking of the memory of this movie makes me feel happy, and I'd recommend this movie.
Paulie was a movie meant to touch your heart. And it has done just that. Even more so if you own a bird. They are loyal and can greatly impact your life and surely will become your best friend. Paulie's journey is definitely one to remember and the relationship between him and Marie is pure and truly beautiful. Paulie himself is absolutely a great character himself, and his devotion to his girl is heart-warming. This movie will really tug on your emotions, as it has done for me. And it takes a lot for a movie to get to me, but Paulie made my emotions seep out. There were cute and amusing scenes and there were scenes so upsetting you cry. A great movie and I BEG you watch if you have a birdy best friend.
I have never seen anything like this. The story is pure creativity, and made it easy to suspend disbelief. A parrot who not only talks, but is cognizant, and whose one desire is to return to the little girl who loves and needs him, and who he also loves. Tony Shalhoub is wonderful. Jay Mohr is excellent. And you have Buddy Hacket! Cheech Marin! Gena Rowlands! To have this much talent, and a story that a young child can enjoy, but that truly speaks to a person of any age is a wonderful thing. This movie made me openly weep with joy. Don't worry about the what the plot is, or what the movie is trying to say; just sit back and enjoy it. I have never seen anything so magical and heartfelt. I feel sorry for anyone who sees it for anything less. Cynicism has robbed us of enough pure hope and pure joy. Let go of it for the hour and a half that is this inspired film!
Some people might call "Paulie" a kids' movie, but I wish to assert that it's more than that. Probably more than anything else, this movie successfully goes to great lengths to show the plight of immigrants in the United States - topical given the recent debates. Portraying a parrot telling a Russian immigrant janitor (Tony Shalhoub) of how he searched America for his original owners, the movie tells several stories. There's the elderly woman (Gena Rowlands) whom he befriends, then a Mexican immigrant (Cheech Marin), and others. All in all, it's a very well done movie. I usually don't expect much from these sorts of movies, but this one is a treat. I certainly recommend it. Also starring Jay Mohr, Buddy Hackett, Bruce Davison, Hallie Eisenberg and Trini Alvarado.
