Truly the worst movie I've ever seen in a theater
In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
Though it might seem like the main character is the antagonist in this comedy drama, towards the end you'll come to view her differently. At the beginning of the movie, we see that her obsessive need to end her friendlessness and solitude has damaged her psychologically, leading her to attack a woman who has just got married.Plaza's portrayal of Ingrid perfectly demonstrates how desperate this bid to make friends has become. Yet, despite the comedy element weaving its way through the plot, the dramatic side of the story is never neglected. It is keenly felt in two specific scenes in the movie: the one where she returns to an empty house after her mother had died - having been in a psychiatric hospital - and the one where Taylor Sloane, the second woman Ingrid has tried to befriend, confronts her. The latter outcome arises from the actions of Taylor's vain, smartarse, obnoxious brother. If this were a thriller, Ingrid would be painted as the crazy, villainous stalker. However, in this dark comedy, the director and writer take the bold step of making Ingrid the victim. That what makes this scene the more tragic of the two I singled out - she is emotionally ripped to pieces by the people she was allegedly stalking. This plainly illustrates that Ingrid Is far from being a psycho - she's just someone who sadly can't differentiate between a username on someone's social media account from being an actual friend. This take on the cyber stalker film offers a fresh view on the person doing the stalking. Through Plaza's mesmerising performance, we get to see her motivation and her soul-destroying obsession to be someone's friend.
'Ingrid Goes West' is like a train wreck happening before your eyes. It's tough to watch, but you can't look away. It's not tough in the sense that it's a bad movie (it's actually a surprisingly good movie), it's tough to watch in the sense that this character ('Ingrid') is so damaged, confused and broken that it is nothing short of heart-breaking. As she is even told at one point in the movie she needs professional help. The line drawn between comedy and drama is a fine one here. To me this is almost entirely a drama, with only the odd speck of humour thrown in the mix. Having said that if someone told me they found this a very funny and even light-hearted movie I could understand that perspective as well. I think it works best as a very dark drama though. A character study of someone who is not right in the mind.I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of O'Shea Jackson Jr. in the film. His character (a Batman lover, much like myself) brought some real and genuine charm to the film. His character perfectly balanced things out for 'Ingrid' and gave her character hope of a better "normal" life. As an audience member it was important to have him there. If she was entirely on her own I think it would be too bleak to bear. For me 'Ingrid Goes West' was a tough watch, but a worthy one nonetheless. I'm glad I saw it, but I don't think I ever want to watch it again.
If you didn't like this movie you just don't get comedy. Period. No need to come bash the movie because you didn't get it. You weren't it's target audience and had no business watching it from the beginning. God forbid a comedy shake up your perception of the world, or make you feel uncomfortable in your 'safe space'. Go watch whatever bland, middle of the road comedy that everyone is quoting these days.
If you are looking for a comedy for a beer&popcorn evening, look somewhere else. This movie is a modern drama, which catches you in uneasy feeling from the very beginning and continues to do so until the final scene. Sometimes it is fun, but mostly the humor leaves you with the feeling of incompleteness. The plot is very straight-line and gives no food for thought apart from the main idea of the movie - how destructive social media might be for one's ego. The motto of the film is "be yourself", however the presentation of this idea is very weak in my humble opinion.
