The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

Before "Back to The Future", this movie was all the rage. Dealing with the master of science fiction H.G. Wells(Malcolm McDowell), creates a "Time Machine". While entertaining his guests, he unknowingly has let in the infamous killer Jack The Ripper(David Warner) who was in the act as a surgeon named John Leslie Stevenson. Because earlier at the dinner party, H.G. Wells has created the Time Machine and he was going to use it to travel either the past, or better yet, the future. During this time, there was a act of murder. Jack The Ripper has struck again. It turned out that Jack The Ripper, has been in the dinner party using Stevenson as an alias. He also has taken the time machine, and send himself into the future! The year, 1979. The place, San Francisco, California. Since he was going to the future, he had to prepare himself the best way he can. He grabbed items and money to barter or trade in for, and he had no problems blending in. He meets a beautiful banker named Amy(Mary Steenburgen). She helps Wells, the same way as Stevenson. While on the trail of his nemesis, he falls for the banker. Since Amy was liberated, she was taken a liking for the very old writer. I enjoyed this movie a lot. I liked the animation and special effects. It was very promising. Some parts were made-up, but it was a nice start which 6 years later, "Back to the Future" made time traveling more hip. 5 stars!

Time After Time was one of those films I saw in my youth (I was 13 in 1979) and it left an indelible impression on me. More of a romance than sci-fi, the viewers suspension of disbelief needs to be fluid here as we watch Meyer take liberties with history and turn our beloved writer into a time hopping romeo out to save the world from the evils of Jack the Ripper. However the deeper entertainments here are the chemistry between Steenburgen and McDowell, who were married after filming completed. So in a sense we are watching a romance in real life unfold similarly like in the film, and all the more better with a lush Rosza score behind it, which really is the best thing about the film. Why this movie is not on Blu-ray completely baffles me but it doesn't exactly stand out in terms of photography. The effects are simple and well placed, external shots are functional and appealing but not epic, but an HD remix is desperately needed here as the SD version is the only available through Amazon. Sometimes studios do this because HD can sometimes make the movie look worse, and if there is no budget to clean it up, keeping it in Low-Fi sometimes is best. However Time After Time deserves a view if you like on screen romance mixed with compelling situations reminiscent of the Hitchcock school of Love meets danger.

A terrific premise: What if H.G. Wells really invented a time machine and Jack the Ripper escaped to the year 1979 in it? Great special effects sparingly used at the start and finish of the film, when the time machine "travels". My only complaint are the hidden "plugs" for the Hyatt-Regency Hotel chain. Even a dinner scene is filmed in their trademark "revolving restaurant" at "The Top of The Hyatt". A bit slow in building up the story. Does not take the cheap way out and does not become a slasher movie. Some blood and a few body parts. A young Mary plays a currency exchange employee. Naturally it's a "London Bank" in San Francisco. Both "The Ripper" and Wells exchange their antique gold coins there. There is a proverbial "game of chess" played between the two. Wells tries to alert the authorities and he gets arrested as the suspect in a string of murders. Using the name "Sherlock Holmes" makes him seem quite mad to the police. As usual, why "Jack the Ripper" is compelled to slash women remains a mystery. Great ending, as Wells returns to his own time and takes "the girl" back with him. They marry. More a love or adventure story than science fiction. Most enjoyable. Several "best" reviews do a wonderful synopsis of the plot. I won't attempt an improvement here. There is one question, however: How did the time machine first get there before Jack the Ripper arrived and how did it end up in San Francisco not London? There is a time paradox there. How the existing museum piece and the "real" machine manage to converge on the same timeline is never explained.

In 1893, HG Wells (Malcolm McDowell) manages to create a time machine. When a friend (David Warner), who turns out to be Jack the Ripper, uses the machine to escape into the future, Wells follows after him to 1979, where he must stop the murderer while also having to come to terms with the shocking future, which is far from the utopia he expected it to be...A very interesting and surprisingly lighthearted thriller/adventure, with quite a bit of comedy thrown in, 'Time After Time' has a silly and fantastic feel to it that kinda reminds me of the more young audience aimed films of the 70's and 80's.The actors are very good. Malcolm McDowell's HG Wells is a nice counter to his usually darker roles (like in 'A Clockwork Orange' or 'Caligula'); he pulls off a brilliantly convincing and even comedic performance as the naive futurist. Likewise, David Warner is also very good as the villain; rather than making the Ripper a psychotic monster he makes for a more sophisticated, almost gentlemanly antagonist that is no less of a menace. Mary Streenburgen is charming and cute, and has great chemistry with McDowell, making their characters' romance convincing and entertaining to watch; however I didn't like her character too much and something in her delivery felt a bit... off sometimes. For example, when she is being threatened by the Ripper her lips curl a bit, as if trying not to smile/laugh.The plot has quite a few problems, both story-wise (the usual thriller clichés and nonsense, like the police not questioning Mary's character to check Wells' claims) and concept-wise (it is time travel based after all, though the movie smartly does not delve too much on the implications it carries); it develops quite predictably too, and sometimes far too silly at that. On the other hands, the movie does have an excellent visual quality and an excellent soundtrack, which helps bring a certain charm to the story.Overall, 'Time After Time' is a charming and fun film with a rather good cast. Despite its nice concept, it ends up as little more than a lighthearted variation of your run-of-the-mill thriller; not so much, however, as to take away from the overall entertainment, and in the end there is more than enough of it in here.
