Best movie of this year hands down!
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
The big problem with this flic is that it raises expectations of an action orientated narrative in the first act but then it doesn't just leave this element unresolved, the plot reverts to a Raft of the Medusa scenario. What we're left with is Five Go Loopy in the Basement (yeah I know there are eight). You know the kind of thing: there's no or little food, a couple of the guys start to go knutz blah, blah, et cetera, et cetera.Quite why people get the notion into their head that another, look at the monkeys degenerate into barbarism as they struggle to survive isolated from civilization, plot is a scintillating prospect for an original script is baffling in the extreme but there you go, it happens and with depressing regularity. Having thoroughly stuck the boot in, I must say that the performances are pretty good in this flic which is something of a consolation at least.
I watched this movies years after it was released, knew nothing about it. Post apocalyptic and I'm in, toss in a couple of stars, bonus.Well things go from bad to worse to really off the chain. Watching the characters devolve and unravel just kept me watching. Sort of like watching a train wreck in slow motion. You know what's going to happen, it's horrible, but you can't avert your eyes away. Just like this movie, when things go south, you're on the ride until it's over, very compelling. Not an easy movie to watch, certainly not for the faint of heart. This is a "take a shower after viewing" type of movie. And you still won't be able to get the feces off of you. (there's the spoiler)
A disgusting film with no value at all. Why the fine actor Courtney B. Vance is in this piece of trash is a real mystery because it is so beneath his talent. The director has no sense of decency and the script is garbage. Not only that, it is badly made and the acting is purely an amateur hour affair. Never in the history of cinema has a motion picture been so ugly and unpleasant. There is no reason at all for this kind of junk being put on film let alone released to the general public without proper warning. Everything about it is beneath contempt. Vance is badly used and sorely misplaced in such a catastrophe. He should fire his agent and never talk to producers of this filth again.
This was, overall, a very realistic story of how humans would behave in a situation like this. It wasn't what I expected, but in a good way. For the individuals who posted negative reviews, they were obviously looking for something more action packed. For the individuals who have the time to enjoy the full story line of a film in this genre, you're in for a bit of a treat. This film can be a bit disturbing at times, but overall a realistic view of how humans would behave in a situation like this. Somebody mentioned this being a apocalyptic rape film. That is absolutely untrue. Granted, there was one scene that preluded to that, but it did not end in such a filthy act. This film has been underrated. Definitely worth the time. You'll be glad you gave it a chance.
