This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place

Sorry, this movie sucks

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

"The Adventures of Don Juan" was the final hurrah for Errol Flynn as far as big budget films were concerned. The film didn't perform very well at the American box office and Jack Warner decided that Flynn was no longer worth the money. The filming was constantly delayed due to Errol Flynn not arriving on time for work allegedly, the budget was out of control, he grew depressed over reviews he read about his film, "Escape Me Never." In addition, Flynn's rather hedonistic lifestyle was taking its toil on his body. He had to wear a tighter costume to hide his expanded waist line and most of the action scenes had to be re-shot several times each. Initially, he and the film's director Vincent Sherman got along quite well as Flynn was receptive to the director's instructions and suggestions. However, things soon changed and by the end of filming, 28 days had been lost for one reason or another. Watching "The Adventures of Don Juan," you would never have guessed there were any problems of any kind. Errol Flynn is great as the womanising, care-free adventurer and Alan Hale features one last time as the ever faithful friend. The look on Flynn's face shows a man who had been through a lot and had experienced what life could throw at him. It is with a slight feeling of sadness that things would change so much for Flynn after this film: No more Alan Hale or Olivia De Havilland, no more big budget films or box office success. The film is played as being tongue-in-cheek for the most part and that was the correct decision. For all of Flynn's way of life, even his character wouldn't stoop so low as to betray his own country. The scene where traitor Robert Douglas attempts to buy Don Juan's loyalty and is turned down highlights this. Juan makes it clear that it fills his heart with horror at the very notion of the King's adviser (Douglas) being the ruler of Spain. Robert Douglas is a very good villain but not quite in Basil Rathbone's league. The set design and the photography are first class. I can actually picture Spain as it might have looked back in the day when this film was based. The music is very good as well, it is a real stirring composition. The swordplay scenes really make this film and they usually occur when Flynn is pushed into action. Vincent Sherman was a fine director in his own right and we see evidence of that here in spades. The last masterpiece Errol Flynn made. His career would never be the same again.

Some movie roles just fit some actors like a glove. No one else could play them. Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. Yul Brynner in "The King and I." Ava Gardner in "The Night of the Iguana." Well, this was one film Errol Flynn was born to play. Along with "The Adventures of Robin Hood," Errol Flynn is in his element as Don Juan. In fact, given his real life reputation, this film contains a lot of humorous and witty scenarios that probably raised the viewers' eyebrows then and still do today for film lovers who know of him. The plot begins as such: When Don Juan disgraces his country of Spain in another country, he goes home and gets embroiled into a political uprising and crisis against his Queen. Robert Douglas always makes a most formidable and imposing villain in movies like this, but here he outdoes himself, and Viveca Lindfors, who was a very striking actress, gives a very thoughtful performance as the Queen, decked out in Oscar-winning gowns by Travilla (his only Oscar win - he didn't even win for dressing Marilyn Monroe in two different films.) With young ladies throwing themselves at Don Juan, such as Ann Rutherford, and exciting duels throughout the film, this is an Errol Flynn film that really gets one stirred up and leaves you feeling good and satisfied long after it's over. No one ever captured the zest and flair of film like Errol Flynn. No one does it better.

Robin Hood, Elizabeth and Essex, They Died With Their Boots On -- add these to this movie, and you have a great combination. Errol Flynn was always so handsome and charming. Wish he could have lived forever. It is so wonderful that his images can be preserved in these excellent films.Yes, Don Juan was the great lover. He also had to be a great politician, what with dealing with kings, courtiers and husbands. If I were a movie director, and could get Errol Flynn to act for me in a leading man role, I know I could get a great performance out of him every time. RIP, Errol. You were the best.12/10

Like his swashbuckling predecessor Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn tackled the part of Don Juan in his late years, he was 39 when he made this film for Warner Brothers. Like Fairbanks, Flynn plays an older and wiser famous lover who's getting a bit bored by it all. Not unlike the real life Errol Flynn.The Adventures Of Don Juan finds Tirso De Molina's famous lover sent home after a couple of escapades in the newly formed Kingdom of Great Britain. King Philip III and Queen Margaret give our hero a chance to redeem himself by teaching at the royal fencing academy.He's up to his neck in trouble soon enough, but not the kind of trouble Flynn's usually in. The first minister Robert Douglas is planning a move against the Queen who he sees as his main obstacle for total power in the kingdom. And the great lover starts behaving more like Sir Lancelot and less like Don Juan where Queen Margaret as played by Viveca Lindfors is concerned.Although Philip III was not the great ruler his father Philip II was, by no means was he as big a fool as Romney Brent plays him. The real Queen Margaret who was his Hapsburg cousin did in fact have considerable influence over domestic and foreign policy in Spain.The Adventures of Don Juan was given a sumptuous production and won an Oscar for Costume Design and was nominated for Art&Set Design. I think the film's best asset besides Errol Flynn is Max Steiner's music. As Flynn films usually are well scored, this one even stands out among that group.The Adventures of Don Juan marked the thirteenth and last film that Alan Hale made with Errol Flynn. If Alan Hale or Frank McHugh did not appear in Warner Brothers production it didn't seem quite right. Jack Warner kept those two guys busiest of all at his studio.Although Errol was getting older and his hedonistic living was starting to show, the part calling for an older and wiser Don Juan was well suited for him. One wishes he'd done the role back in the middle Thirties as a young man however.
