Absolutely Fantastic
While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
Blistering performances.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
saw this on netflix and began watching, going in with no expectations, not much else to do this particular night, and lo and behold, we literally both cried tears of laughter, peewee really shows his colors as one of the best comedic voices of our time. This may sound like intense praise, but please, just trust me and watch it, you will enjoy yourself. You don't have to be a kid or drugged up to appreciate it, it's not the same ol innocent peewee humor as before. Devote at least 20 minutes to get hooked in and let er rip! It seems as though this movie allowed peewee to really come out of his shell. This isn't your run of the mill peewee. This peewee covers a little more adult themes, and this movie has a DELIGHTFUL effed-up-ness to it. A bit more of an edge for sure but that makes it all the more fun. We really had a great time and were very surprised, talked it about it for a while afterwards! If you liked peewee as a kid, or don't even have any conception of peewee at all, WATCH IT! ENJOY YOURSELF! "Live a little!" One of our favorite movies of our new era! Thank you Peewee!
Pee Wees Big Holiday makes its way on Netflix, hopefully finding its way in your living room somewhere out there. The film is a pretty decent comeback from the 80's icon Paul Reubans. No, it doesn't hold a candle to Pee Wees Big Adventure, it lacks the magic and zany elements that Tim Burton provided. However, it's a helluva lot better then Big Top Pee Wee. I can't say that there were a lot of laugh out loud moments, but it's still worth a look, as I found it a ton of fun to watch. If it won't make you laugh, it's almost guaranteed to make you smile. It's a harmless, almost profanity free movie that the whole family can enjoy. My only complaint...I think they could have done without Pee Wee. And by Pee Wee, I am of course talking about the other Pee Wee in the movie, yes, there's another Pee Wee, no, not a twin, a female Pee Wee. Actually, I think they could have done without the three gang girls altogether, but putting Pee Wee in peril and danger is one of the things that will keep you watching. Hats off to the Netflix team with their job well done efforts, and hope to see more projects like this in the future.
The artistic heart of any Pee Wee movie is the idea that you're looking at the world through the eyes of a kid again. Everything is bigger, brighter, more exciting, scarier, and new. This is a road trip story, that sets up lots of funny, and usually absurd encounters for Pee Wee to experience. There's no new ground broken here, and that's as it should be. It's a continuation of everything that makes Pee Wee great. I laughed, I snorted, and I smiled the whole time.If you like classic Pee Wee Herman, you'll love this!A fun movie for the kid in all of us!I know you are, but what am I??
I have the theory that contemporary childish entertainment, full of bizarre concepts, grotesque characters and naughty humor, was originated by two cultural hits of the '80s: Ren & Stimpy and Pee- wee's Playhouse. Both series offered a refreshing alternative to the ultra-commercialized products which used to be popular back then, which were basically toys ads with awful animation (like Community satirized in one of its best episodes). On the opposite, Ren & Stimpy and Pee-wee's Playhouse offered new ideas, overflowing creativity and a sense of humor which was so subversive that their broadcast on Saturdays morning seems unbelievable. For better or for worse, Ren & Stimpy was never able to surpass the "cult" niche, but Pee-wee's Playhouse extended its success to two films (Pee-wee's Big Adventure and Big Top Pee-wee) before hibernating for many years... probably due to certain personal "indiscretions" committed by Paul Reubens, the creator and alter-ego of Pee-wee. However, in this century, Pee-wee resurrected with a successful Broadway spectacle, rumours of a TV spin-off and now another film, in which Reubens puts on the grey suit and red tie again in order to play this perennial child-adult. Unfortunately, I ended up finding Pee-wee's Big Holiday simpleton and boring, completely lacking of the emotions, exuberant humor and runaway greatness of the TV series and the previous movies. Besides, I don't know what audience this film was made for; I really doubt that modern kids, accustomed to the strident caricatures of Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, will get interested in the modest live-action adventures from Pee-wee, while the adults (like it happened to me) will get bored by the insipid screenplay, which closely follows the structure of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, but not nearly reaching the same level of humor and surrealism. Pee-wee's Big Holiday is basically a weak copy, vaguely recognizable due to its general appearance, but without the vibrating color of the original version. The classic road movie formula employed by Pee-wee's Big Holiday puts Pee-wee in contact with a parade of picturesque characters, including three aggressive female criminals, a woman with a flying car, a farmer old man who is very jealous with his daughters, a laconic "woodsman" and an Amish community; and the encounters result in: nothing. The story doesn't progress; it simply jumps from location to location without any structure or purpose. In conclusion, I didn't like Pee-wee's Big Holiday, and I ended up finding it a waste of time. In order to take the bad taste out of my mouth, I will re-watch some old episodes of Pee-wee's Playhouse (which are available on Netflix), in order to re-encounter with those wacky characters and manic sense of humor which made that TV series so unique.
