Best movie ever!
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
This film is especially suitable for all those who don't like Westerns because think they're never more than train robberies and duels at sunset. Set in the Wild West, this comedy shows the adventurous way that Bret Maverick enters the most lucrative poker tournament in the region. It's a funny story that harmoniously combines action and adventure and where Mel Gibson plays the leading role. Despite his consecration, this actor is no stranger to light comedies (think of "What Women Want"), even though these aren't the kind of jobs he likes to bet. He has Jodie Foster and James Garner as supporting actors and Alfred Molina as a villain, but he manages to stand out from them and carry the film on his back in a very enjoyable way. The fact is they never seemed committed, giving Gibson a lot of space to shine even when everyone was on scene. The result, however, is frankly pleasant. This film is not a work of art nor was it thought to be. It's made for entertain the public and does so easily, with jokes, funny dialogues and action scenes where comedy comes from situations in which protagonist is involved, usually against his will. As usual in comedies, the characters are light and even somewhat stereotyped. The Indians also appear in the film, which makes fun of preconceived ideas about them. Sets and costumes are also good, and wear what we normally associate with Far West. Not worth looking for an exceptional script, great characters or a dramatic show. This movie is to watch without thinking. So sit back and enjoy.
I'm surprisingly disappointed to see the rating of 7 after finished of seeing this movie. I think this deserves more than 7 after people managed to give 7 stars for a film like Amazing spider man 1. I must admit the fact that lead characters performances are the wholesome factor of this movie. Mel Gibson looked charming and screen captivating as usual and Jodie Foster is remarkable combination to make the film more attractive.wittiness and story narrating is quite well sure one of the easy going story will be soothing you any time of you watch. highly recommend to watch and enjoy the movie even you not familiar with Poker playing stuffs.go for this weekend along with this movie.
The reviewers thought that this movie was jilted and had no really direct plot, and that may be so, but I still liked it. Parts of the movie were confusing and didn't really make sense, like what exactly was happening at the end, but it still didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie.Maverick is based on a old TV series of the same name, and actually has the actors from the original staring in it (especially the guy playing Zane Cooper). The movie is based around Brett Maverick (Mel Gibson) who is trying to get $3000 so that he might enter into a poker championship on a riverboat and the adventures that he goes through trying to get there. Maverick goes through so much, that it would take too long to explain all of them, so I will just settle with talking about Maverick's character The reason I like Maverick is because of Maverick's character. He is a gambler, a smoker, and a champion bluffer. He does not survive in the west by his skill at brawling or shooting people, but rather his wits. He uses his ability to bluff to the extreme, and also his skills such as speaking an Indian language, and the money he has in his pocket, to not only survive, but to survive well off. He may not be a good shot, but he is a very fast draw, and he uses his fast draw to intimidate people into thinking that he is a good shot as well, but what he won't do is get into a direct fight, unless he knows that he is going to win. This is a cool little movie, and quite enjoyable from my end of things. As I said, the ending seems to fall apart as it does not have any reason for why the things happened, and just seems to be quite confusing. If they had reworked the ending, then it would have become a much better movie.
Maybe it wasn't really like this in the Old West but this film does fill me with the hope that at least sometimes it had these moments. This film is pure entertainment, not a historical documentary and certainly not, at any point, to be taken seriously. Maverick's (Mel Gibson's) character as a likable rogue had a surreal and very believable chemistry with Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster) and a pleasant nod to the "original" maverick that old standby, James Garner. The humour is firmly tongue-in-cheek and Foster does indeed "do southern" very acceptably and looks as radiant as any woman in the role could. Her unique brand of energy, injured innocence, scheming minxicity (I made that up) and twangy edginess give the part a solid and definitive profile. No man of Maverick's marque (or any other for that matter) could resist chasing a temptress of such charm, beauty and duplicity through a hundred countries to get his money back and would indeed have a wonderful time doing it.I'm not a Mel Gibson fan but this exceptional part was cast against type and Mel performed very well. As I said, the chemistry between Mel and Jodie is tangible, perhaps because they're close friends off-screen as well.Garner is solid, if a little pedestrian (don't mistake it for gravitas Mr. G), but since he's already got his (metaphorical) halo it's hard to find fault with him and particularly for his acceptably human (if feigned) reluctance to join a firefight with a bunch of drunken outlaws. Joseph (Graham Greene) is outstanding as is Angel (fellow countryman Alfred Molina who has proved himself many times since) as the kind of necessary semi-villain/rogue types that help show Maverick, no angel himself, in a slightly less predatory light. This film pretends to be nothing but what it is and that stands to its eternal credit. There's no doubt, given the cast performances, that this film was a hoot to make. Such films are vital to lighten our moods from the sombre turns they can take sometimes by reminding us that probably it was much worse in the past, and for exactly that reason, it might also have been quite a bit better.
