You won't be disappointed!
Crappy film
It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
Watching it is like watching the spectacle of a class clown at their best: you laugh at their jokes, instigate their defiance, and "ooooh" when they get in trouble.
An Australian Western that goes into my favorite's list! Like "Good for Nothing" (2011) ...a great ending to a well crafted story.Even though I predicted the real situation, I went along with it, because instead of ruining the movie, the "why" and "how" became the valuable questions, to separate the good from the bad, "Jimmy" is a combination of Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson and Eli Wallach (without the cynical grim) I just wished that the black panther, could have been more relevant and be somehow one reason for a sequel! The ending it will touch you, let's leave it like that, as always no spoilers in here. So if you are looking for shootouts, and horses with a simple scenario and a good story, "Red Hill" is for you!
You could be forgiven for thinking this is a Clint Eastwood style period set western and that's exactly what I thought it was upon seeing the poster design and film title, in fact its set in the present day and is more of a homage to westerns. Being set in the arid merciless Aussie outback of course does make it more of cowboy than cop thriller for sure. The film is pretty unoriginal lets be honest about it, the layout and events are nothing new and do smell strongly of certain saddle bound Eastwood adventures but again..lets be honest here, its a damn good Aussie version of certain saddle bound Eastwood adventures. Beating around no bushes this is a strong violent retribution/revenge thriller that almost kinda boarders on 'The Terminator' in some building and street sequences with its light-less settings, strong shadows and mute anti hero killer. From the start you know something is amiss with the local police force and their gruff leader 'Old Bill', you can kinda tell what will happen really but it doesn't detract from the fun of the film one bit. The cast are unknown to me but pretty big in Oz. Bisley as 'Old Bill' is perfect and really comes across well as the hardened no nonsense chief whilst Lewis is great as the mute aboriginal gunman who at first is intimidating, almost robotic like in his swift killings, but you know all is not as it seems. The lead Kwanten does sort of over act towards the finale as he goes from being a regular guy to a strong stern voiced gunman brewing over with clichés but you feel the tenseness of the finale and you find yourself glued to the screen. Nothing really new to the table here but the whole film looks good and is well acted with a trusted source in the nasty revenge genre to always get the juices flowing, maybe some more nastiness to really bring home the need for revenge was needed though.Highly recommended and much better fair than the usual over hyped glossy Hollywood guff that was 'No Country for Old Men', this is gritty and more down to earth with realistic characters. The Oz factor of course helps this hugely. Still not so sure what the panther subplot was all about though, why was it needed? oh well.7/10
Red Hill is a usual western tale, a man is arrested, he breaks free and comes back for revenge and things aren't what they seem. Every good guy is a terrible shot and all of them except the main guy are incredibly dumb. The bad guy is mute, startling and an expert marksman until select moments when for no reason he seems to forget how to operate a firearm. The acting is mediocre except for the main actor, Ryan Kwanten, who does an excellent job portraying a man who can get the crap kicked out of him for an hour and half. The soundtrack is pretty good, the visuals are okay and the blood factor is little over the top on occasion making this seem almost like a cheesy slasher flick but with guns instead of knives. The plot line is simple and doesn't leave you to think about anything afterwards making this overall, a fairly forgettable movie. It's not a terrible flick but it is predictable and best suited for an afternoon matinée viewing while you're cleaning the house and need something in the background.
I'm not really into Western type action movies but I go to say, I really did enjoy Red Hill. The story was kind of unexpected though a little obvious towards the middle of the actual plot. The action kept dragging a little but the story it self kept me interested .Well worth a watch.Ryan Kwanten acting seems the same in everything I've seen him in but I do like the guy. He does do his part well and I can take him serious. I'll defiantly look out for more of his Movies and TV.I did find one thing quite strange, where did the town folk disappear? I understand that an alert was sent out into town and where did they all go? No one else in town through out the movie? Finally, what's the deal with the panther? Was that necessary?Over all, do watch it. I did enjoy.
