Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
It’s an especially fun movie from a director and cast who are clearly having a good time allowing themselves to let loose.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
The first must-see film of the year.
This could have been a "tener" but some easy shortcuts in the story and some not natural acting from some of actors turned the movie down to 8. Naomi is great and shows everyone how acting shall be done.
This is definitely an action film, but sometimes it's difficult to see why. It would be good to see a movie with a straight story line occasionally, and this convoluted effort definitely doesn't qualify. People seem to think Ms Rapace is great here. I don't agree: her enunciation is poor and her facial expressions are wooden. Also, I confess, I find female fighters entirely unconvincing in any context, and this movie is no exception. I'm giving it four stars solely because the gunshot sound effects are better than usual.
I enjoyed this. Sure, there were cliches typical to this type of movie, but the acting was competent and the story was well written. There are twists and turns, friends turned foes, as expected from this type of movies. There is also a subtext that maybe not all immigrants came to murder the first born of the locals in Western countries, and maybe some of these terrorists are sponsored or helped by our own secret services/army and political parties. This probably came as a shock to everyone under 5 who watched this movie, hence the low rating on this site. There is also a feminist angle to this movie, as the heroine takes twice the physical abuse of an MMA fighter during a season, and she still survives with the makeup intact.
Some social worker in London gives tips to MI5 about potential terrorists. She's actual CIA and how that's supposed to work I'm not sure but she's somewhat traumatized because she wasn't able to deter a bombing in Paris years ago where plenty of civilians died.Suddenly she's approached by CIA London station. They want her to interrogate a suspect they have who is involved in an active plot to carry out some attack. She can speak several languages and manages to get info from the guy. Then she gets a phone call... It's the CIA, asking her to work with them on this very same threat. Now she knows something is up, and sure enough she has to escape before they kill her.Now she gets in touch with her former handler right before the bad guys catch up with them and kill him. She escapes to a pad he has. There she runs into a thief robbing the place. He overhears a conversation she has with the CIA so he offers to stick around and help, just in time as again the bad guys catch up with her but the thief rescues her in time.In the meantime we learn more about the plot that's been set in motion. The plan is to release a weaponized, aerosolized version of the Marbug virus. And by accident some of it is released by the bad guys so MI5 is aware what they are dealing with. There are more surprises in store for our heroine as she learns that the imam behind all this actually put a stop order to the attack but the bad guys are trying to intercept and corrupt the message before it gets to the attacker so that way the attack will take place as planned. And as it turns out the bad guys have infiltrated all levels of US and English government. The question then is whether she will be able to stop the attack in time and against all odds.Initially Unlocked seemed like an alright thriller about terrorism, but then the sudden twist really surprised me and it improved this movie dramatically. Of course the twists just keep coming and the movie does actually sort everything out in a somewhat believable way. The one thing that was missing was a motive for the villains but that too is explained at the end and no loose ties are left.Much is made of the big name cast but that's not what makes this movie a standout. I suspect it would have been ever better with a different and less expensive cast. Rapace can act but doesn't look the part of some CIA field agent kicking butt. The same can be said of Colette and Douglas and their respective parts. Direction does a good job keeping us interested in the excellent story that offers no shortage of twists and turns. And it is the story that shines, the first work of the screenwriter. For anyone into spy action thrillers that involve terrorism, Unlocked us a must-see.
