Highly Overrated But Still Good
Fresh and Exciting
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
No its not an Oscar winning type of film but what it is......is good clean fun and if you can't enjoy this film, then you probably just take it all just too seriously and don't get the quintessentially British humour that makes it so good, one or two performances may have been a little plastic but there are some good and unexpected performances from others. In short this film is for you if you have a dry sense of humour but not if you like big budget flicks with lots of explosions and stupid untalented (yet pretty) American actresses.I would not be put off by what some connoisseurs might say, give it a go its a real sleeper in my lowly opinion!
This curious film is, to me, flawed in one fatal respect.A largely extemporised crime comedy/drama featuring some heavy-hitting UK talent, it is pretty funny most of the way through. I enjoyed, and was entertained by, about 90% of the movie. Everything, in fact, up to the very end.And then there are several violent killings. Now, I don't have a problem with violence, and I don't have a problem with mixing violence with comedy. But when you combine the two, it's a really good idea if there is a point to it - Little Big Man, for instance, where the savagery of genocide is given heightened contrast by the overall daftness of the rest of Jack Crabbe's life.No such consideration applies here, and the violence is instead completely out of place. The Coens made a similar mistake with Burn After Reading.
Recommended to me by a colleague he did my a huge favour - like a fool I read bad reviews and ignored this gem; lesson learned my son! Some people will never "get" this movie; bear with me if you believe that you fall into this category. The first thing an astute viewer will spot is that most of the characters are named after the actors; a trademark of the writers. The inept gangsters - pretty much all of them - deliver a first class comic performance. If you laughed at Snatch, at Lock Stock film and TV show, and of course laughed with Tarantino on his journey - you'll surely laugh at this film.Bravo are showing it regularly at the moment (Jan 2007).
This film is about a man in London getting involved with a group of gangsters. This film, although is a gangster film, is in fact very funny. There are many subtle jokes and one liners in the film, which does make people laugh. The sets in the film are often simple, but it still looks thoughtfully created. The dialogs are very British, which could be an impediment for it to have appeal in the United States.Jude Law is a gem in the film, his character is memorable and remarkable.Another notable thing in this film is that, despite being a gangster film, it is not violent or gory. This is a big plus for non gore fans!
