The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Hammer used to stand for Horror, so what the hell went wrong here?Firstly, where was The Woman In Black? The only time you see her is when you look at the advertising poster. As for Angel Of Death!... well there wasn't much to speak of at all. After watching this I was amazed it didn't get a PG certification, especially because there was nothing overtly frightening or horrifying about the story or the picture. The closest we came to an eerie atmosphere was when young Edward was trapped in the constantly locked, however always open, room where the spirit of The Woman resided, all we got then was a few moving toys and a dark shadow.I think the director, Tom Harper, was trying to build atmosphere and get the minds of the audience to "fill in the blanks", therefore immersing themselves into the story and film more. It didn't work.In fact, I'd probably recommend this film to all insomniacs as the banality within should put them to sleep quite fast.Did the studio pay its light bill? Because everything that was shot in darkness was so poor in visibility that if I even turned on an incidental light source the picture on the screen was near unwatchable! This is a travesty in Horror filmmaking, from the story (which is basic, lacking in substance, and holds no surprises) to the direction (which lacks style, atmosphere, and power). The only good thing about the whole movie is the acting though it's impossible to save this film.
The original TV version was outstanding. This version was a sequel to the Hammer version starring Daniel Radcliffe.Too many scenes were so dark as to obscure what was happening. The general gloom reduced the atmosphere rather than adding to it.Scriptwriting lacked a clear dynamic. The original story by Susan Hill was a classic ghost story and provided a credible premise for the haunting. It should be possible to build on this, but unfortunately this sequel failed to do this. Ostensibly, all the ingredients were present, but... well, it takes more than an old neglected house and a bunch of wartime child evacuees to make a spooky film.Too episodic in plot to be effective. Overall short on tension and thrills.
it is a correct horror. and a not bad sequel. it not gives more surprises but preserves the original atmosphere, gives decent story and good performances, reminds old fashion horror rules. and this is a virtue in the middle of films of genre reduced at blood and cries. in same measure, a good point is represented by the war atmosphere who gives a special nuance to the story. short, a good film. for the grace to use different ingredients - the love story, the dark rooms, the pressure to the teachers to protect the children, the effort to save and the hope force. a film like an old picture, more then the first film. because it gives many opportunities to explore the sides of a revenge myth. because it has the almost ignored virtues of the classic horror. and this is real a good thing.
Being a big fan of The first Woman In Black, I was longing to see this film. The biggest problem with this film is lighting. Its just too dark. The first time I watched it with my Projector set for normal viewing I was left wondering what I had just been watching. Lots of booming creepy music and dark screens, the truth was creepy things were going on but could not be seen just dark shadowy nothingness. I watched the film again with the brightness settings turned up higher than i would normally ever have them and then it was different. Those creepy outbursts of music were accompanying blink and they are gone apparitions etc. The poor lighting is a real down point on this movie almost like it has been shot in a coal mine. As for the film itself (when you can see it) I would have to say that the acting is really good and has a sort of classic feel to it and the story is OK too but it cannot compare to the first film. Although well scripted and acted not enough happens. The Woman In Black is not in the film that much and the pace of the film is slow with a lack of Paranormal happenings. It lacks the first films intense atmospherics. Its just not that creepy. Its interesting enough to keep you watching though and does have a certain psychological intensity to it. All in all not a bad film but not the creepy masterpiece of the first film and be prepared to adjust your screens brightness or you will miss nearly all the creepy moments that the film provides.
