In this musical comedy, Valerie is dealing with her philandering fiancé, Ted, when she finds that a trio of aliens have crashed their spaceship into her swimming pool. Once the furry beings are shaved at her girlfriend's salon, the women discover three handsome men underneath. This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
RELEASED IN 1988 and directed by Julien Temple, "Earth Girls are Easy" chronicles events when three aliens (Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans) befriend a woman in Los Angeles (Geena Davis) and go out on the town. Julie Brown plays the woman's friend at work while Charles Rocket plays her roaming-eye fiancé. Michael McKean is on hand as her stoner brother. This movie's goofy, but often hilarious and always fun & entertaining. Don't expect the howling bad crapola of future duds "2001: A Space Travesty" and "What Planet Are You From?" (both from 2000). Unlike those flicks, the unsavory sleaze is kept in check; it's almost innocent by comparison. I've never seen Julie Brown before, but she's definitely a bright spot. The score is fun & energetic in a decidedly 80's way. THE MOVIE RUNS 100 minutes and was shot in the Los Angeles area. WRITERS: Julie Brown, Charlie Coffey & Terrence E. McNally. GRADE: B+
Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, Charles Rocket, Michael McKean and Julie Brown star in this 1989 sci-fi comedy. Davis (Beetlejuice) plays Valerie, a California manicurist who is in a troubled relationship. Soon, 3 colorful, furry aliens head to Earth and land in her swimming pool. She's scared at first, but befriends them and helps them blend in. Goldblum (The Fly) plays Mac, the leader of the trio who falls for her, Carrey (The Mask) plays Wiploc, Wayans (The Last Boy Scout) plays Zeebo, the late, Rocket (Dumb & Dumber) plays Valerie's cheating fiancée, Ted who is a doctor, McKean (This is Spinal Tap) plays hippie, Woody and Brown (Clueless) plays Valerie's friend, Candy. This is a bizarre film that pokes fun of and pays tribute to 50's sci-fi & B movies. It also provides some cheesy, yet amusing musical sequences provided by Miss Brown, Davis & Goldblum have good chemistry and had previously worked together in "The Fly" & "Transylvania 6-5000." Carrey and Wayans also worked together on TV's "In Living Color." I'd give this a view at least once.
If you didn't live through the 1980s and are wondering what a lot of the excesses of that particular decade were like, a good artifact from that era that would give you that answer would be "Earth Girls Are Easy". The movie is jam-packed with 80s attributes - music, lingo, fashions, and a lot more. True, this material does date the movie considerably, but if you are nostalgic for the era you will welcome this material. It also helps that the movie is extremely sunny and upbeat, with likable performances from the cast. The movie is undeniably fun at times, but there is a big flaw that should have been worked on before filming started. The problem is that there is very little story here. The events of the movie unfold very slowly when the pace should have been more snappy and the story more substantial. So if you decide to watch this movie, wait until you are in an especially patient mood.
I didn't think much of this film when I first saw it but since then I have watched it a number of times and, in the words of Beetlejuice, "it keeps getting funnier every single time!" I work at a busy video store and I'll often put this film on when I'm working Saturday night. It's always popular with customers who enjoy watching it as they browse, comment on how young Jim Carrey looks, and ask "What on earth is this?" as they get to the checkout counter. That's because its such a great looking film. The vibrant color palette with its bright primaries and 80s rehash of 1950s aesthetics is inspired production design. The film really has aged incredibly well and looks better today than when it was first released. Were it released today it could easily take its place beside any of the recent musical comedies that have come out in the last ten years.
