Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
It's the 23rd century, and a mysterious alien power is threatening Earth by evaporating the oceans and destroying the atmosphere. In a frantic attempt to save mankind, Kirk and his crew must time travel back to 1986 San Francisco where they find a world of punk, pizza and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything they've ever encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy. A thrilling, action-packed Star Trek adventure!

Too much of everything
If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
There is definitely an excellent idea hidden in the background of the film. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find it.
This has everything. It begins with the Federation wanting to hang Kirk for stealing and losing the fabled Enterprise. Kirk and his crew aboard their hi-jacked bird of prey save Earth from instant death, a punishment for killing all the Humpback Whales. A heroic mission begins right where the last one left off. To save the Earth the crew travels back in time to find some Humpback Whales, George and a pregnant Gracie, then bring them forward to their current Star Date. There is humor, and sillyness that gives this edition a lovely light hearted feel that only Kirk and his crew can do. Sit back and watch this one. Grab a DVD because you will want watch this time traveling romp more than once. Live long and prosper, Kirk out.
This is likely the Star Trek film with the widest appeal, in that it's essentially a fish-out-of-water comedy with a little sci-fi thrown in. An unknown ship is approaching earth, broadcasting an indecipherable message, and destroying all planets in it's wake. The Enterprise crew figures out that the message is whale sounds, except that whales have been extinct for hundreds of years, so there's no one left to answer the ship. This leads our intrepid crew to slingshot around the sun to travel back in time in order to bring a whale to the future to save future earth. Once in modern day San Francisco (or 1980s San Francisco), the crew has a series of humorous encounters with cars, money, and punk rockers, while trying to secure a whale. It's all quite funny and entertaining, but it's not very "Trek." The characters are all still the characters we know and love, but the story is pretty much "Crocodile Dundee" "Coming to America" or "The Out-of-Towners" except with the Star Trek crew out of their element. But not to be too dismissive, it is a lot of fun and is never boring, which is more than can be said of most Star Trek films, which tend to be pretty hit-or-miss. The film also get bonus points for including my favorite Go-Go, Jane Wiedlin as an Alien Communications Officer.
A probe of unknown origin is approaching Earth causing climatic destruction and issuing a message similar to the whales' song, but as they are extinct in the XXIII century, Kirk & Company travel back in time to 1986' Earth in order to capture a couple of humpback whales. There they get it and they go back to their time and everything goes well, with the probe stopping the transmission after hearing the whale song (or communicating, it is also an hypothesis however implausible it is) and turning route to any unknown destination. Thank goodness that whales are not vindictive towards humans, otherwise the end might well have been another, right?Honestly, this movie looks like a parody and destroys everything that Star Trek has to offer. It clearly is a film of the 80's Hollywood stupidity era. And I just do not give it 1/10 because that score I only reserve to movies that I really hate, but it's near, very near. 2/10
I just recently re-watched this one after a long time of no-see and I will say it's still as funny today as it was in 1986! Spock trying to use colorful language, Scotty's "hello computer", Chekhov's problems with the police - on and on... a very unforgettable Star Trek film and still on of my all time favorite movies. This film involves a probe that shuts things down in the 23rd century - threatening all existence... it simply wants to communicate with whales but there are no whales in the 23rd due to human whale hunting. It's up to Kirk and crew to devise a plan to go back in time in order to obtain a male and a female whale to save life in the 23rd century.First time viewers: This movie you really don't have to watch parts 1, 2 and 3 to know what's going on in part 4 but I do recommend watching parts 2 and 3 so you will understand the beginning of the film and what's going on with Mr. Spock a lot better.A fun, fun movie!! 10/10
