British sad sack Gary is a failed entrepreneur who has just arrived in Beijing's stylish Sanlitun district, allegedly to start a business. There are other reasons why he has uprooted himself — he's followed his ex-wife and young son, for one — but he soon finds out that China isn't the easiest place to succeed. Blissfully untouched by self-awareness, and only fitfully in tune with reality, Gary sallies forth to make money, armed with faith in himself and little to no knowledge of Chinese culture. He soon hooks up with Frank, a trust-fund kid from Australia who offers to mentor Gary in Eastern ways, although Frank's pedagogical method is restricted to yelling at Gary for being a Westerner and not being as "Chinese" as him.

Instead, you get a movie that's enjoyable enough, but leaves you feeling like it could have been much, much more.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

I discovered Friday just a year ago, and since then it's one of my most favorite movies that I rewatched for about 40 times or even more. The most amazing thing about Friday is that everyone was so natural in it, so it doesn't feel like a movie - it's rather a reflection of real life. And it's still wonderful, still hilarious. All the best wishes to everyone who made Friday possible! Love you all! :)

When someone asks me which movie i have seen the most times, i have to answer Friday. I know the movie pretty much verbatim, and have seen it well over 30 times. Chris Tucker is one of the funniest people ever. This is his best performance, followed closely by Rush Hour. There are so many funny moments in this movie it would be impossible to name them all here. My favorites would have to be when Smokey meets his blind date, who turns out to be fat and bald, and the scenes where Deebo confronts Smokey and Craig, played by Ice Cube. The movie has a hilarious supporting cast, including John Witherspoon, Tiny Lister, and Bernie Mac. Critics don't know anything. If you ever have a chance to see this and enjoy urban comedy and Chris Tucker, don't even hesitate to watch. 10/10

I like this movie. The screenplay is excellent. The protagonists are strong with clear desires and obstacles to overcome. This allowed the rest of the cast to bounce off of them and shine. The addition of the ticking clock I thought was a wonderful idea that added tension to story. The humor in this film was achieved through conflict and not stereotypes which at times seems to be a favorite ploy of urban films. Many black movies are didactic but this film stayed clear of that and focused on entertaining the audience. This film's appeal is simply that the filmmakers told a great story cinematically. This film shows that a great screenplay is the beginning of a great movie be it an urban theme or not.

Friday is one of those movies that is pretty pointless but it spoke to a generation. I think the real reason why this movie works is due to the likability of the cast. You can't help but like Ice Cube and Chris Tucker despite them being complete slackers and a bit boneheaded. Their chemistry is great and their comedic timing is solid. The supporting cast also play their individual roles well despite the lack of material.I find that I have no problem watching this movie and to a certain extent enjoy it but it still doesn't change the fact that it is nothing more than a cult hit movie that was released at the right time in history.
