Absolutely brilliant
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Blistering performances.
That's the main point that stood out for me in this movie.Still a teenager the draft called me and some of my homies, some of them went to Nam.First and second hand I've known the vast majority of persons that went there went through changes. The brutality in this movie reflected some of the experiences I heard about. Many men don't recover from it,a lot are around us and are misunderstood. Some persons may have a different opinion about war after viewing this movie. That was the strong point for me about this movie. This review comes from a person that might of talked about World War II with their Uncle but his body was never sent back.
This movie is just a total waste of time. I'm telling you DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.Terrible Acting, I mean Chris Tucker??? This guy is just horrible. The slowness of this film isn't the only issue I have with it, the directing is awful.Take for example the scenes in Vietnam - how predictable were they??? The camera angles were done by a first time director. The scene at the butcher shop - look how immature this scene really is. Are the people walking by robots? Its as if they tried to over direct them.Scene when girl first meets him her father (Anthony) - is she a Zombie? Its like a 1970s film where they used a puppet to get the child actor's attention. And when he is having nightmares - What the HELL!! OK and last 2 rips:Absolutely needed more music in the background, the silence made some scenes so slow, so boring. And why all the racial references? Just not needed!Skip the waste of 2hrs.
No film I have seen captures the time better. No movie I have seen tells me what it must have been like better. No film I have seen has stunned me more. No film I have seen better uses music to create an atmosphere that will submerged you. I saw it when it came out and it remains lodged in my head. They talk about education through entertainment. This film is a true example of this process. When I emerged from the cinema I was in a different world for at least four hours. Hollywood has done lots of films about Vietnam and lots of films about oppressed people in powerless situations. This ranks among the most powerful. I am not sure that I will watch it again but I am sure that you must watch it once. It is that good.
This is more than just a great genre flick, but a film that captures the essence, for lack of a better term, of living and growing up in Bronx during 60's and the buildup to the Vietnam war. All of the actors played their parts very well and found Chris Tucker's character a morbid yet apt comic relief to a very serious topic, which in turn was captured in Bokeem Woodbine's part and who played "Cleon" - The look on the faces of those in the unit when they were trying to get him to get rid of the head of the dead enemy soldier was uncompromisingly gripping.Another great performance was had by Keith David, of Platoon fame who played the worldly and elder part to-a-T. And not to mention Larenz Tate, whose boyishly-looking features cleanly established the groundwork in the development of the story. And although a lot of profanity was employed in this movie, it does capture the gravity of what the story hoped to convey. The movie is so vivid and compelling, I believe that this account was based on reality, than that of imagination or fiction. Kudos to the Hughes bros. who've once again given us yet another thought provoking glimpse of life from another perspective.Wishful thinking: Beginning with the lives of the principal actors when they first met as children.Memorable movie quote: "Fuck you, man. It stinks like a sack full of assholes!"
