A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

Any martial art film fan is painfully aware of the difference between a "typical" effort and one which stands out.Take (for example) the odd career of Scott Adkins, a talented actor/fighter who, try as he might, can only "connect" with his audience when playing Boyka, a Russian prison fighter.Point being, it is not "just" the fighting, it is the story that grabs you as well. That said, the one-of-a-kind story of an autistic girl, who looks like she weighs 75 pounds soaking wet, and who learned all her MA moves by watching TV, should not work. It should not work on paper and it definitely should not work on screen. But it does, and that is the amazing thing about this film.It is entertaining. And keeps you guessing. The choreography is good as the best of the Thai films, and that means pretty good.JeeJa Yanin was 23 when this film was made but looks much younger, which only adds to the oddness. It is as if Tony Jaa had an illegitimate child with Shirley Temple.Recommended. And don't worry about a sequel. This is a one of a kind.

CHOCOLATE is the latest offering to come from Thailand's top action directors: the same guys who brought us ONG BAK and WARRIOR KING. This film changes the mould slightly, with the shift from Tony Jaa to a new female lead actress, Jeeja Yanin, who seems just as skilled as Jaa to me. Otherwise it's business as usual, as our heroine takes on multiple bad guys in huge, brawling action set-pieces that get progressively more elaborate and more exciting as the story goes on. As for the story, it's a little more believable than in the other films, and the idea of having the main actress playing an autistic character is a brave one that ultimately pays off. However, this is a film all about the action and strictly one for the action fans. The first half hour makes for slow build up, with plenty of the melodrama you expect from these productions. Then we hit the first set-piece, a simple battle in an ice factory. This recalls THE BIG BOSS and is quite good, although Yanin's moves seem deceptively simple. The second time – a battle in a warehouse – and it's much better, with great style and great stunts. Yanin proves athletic and powerful and does some seemingly impossible stuff. The third set-piece is inside a butcher's, and is the best yet, with great use made of props – painful spikes, cleavers and all manner of implements ready to impale the unwary. By this time, so much emphasis has been made of the action, we're almost at the climax, which lasts for an incredible half an hour. It starts off with a rerun of WARRIOR KING's one-against-many showdown, as Yanin tackles loads of thugs, before moving into swordplay and some bloody deaths. All that's left is the lead villain to deal with – and I was ready for the film to be over; I'd already marked it 4 out of 5 in my head. Pretty good, if short. How mistaken I was. We have another full ten minutes out of this and it's the best part of the film – indeed the best part of any Thai film I've seen. Full of originality, this is yet another set-piece, set up in the air as Yanin tackles the bad guys on the outside of a building! It's an elaborate set that Jackie Chan would be proud of, as characters jump from sign to sign, get thrown through glass or just fall painfully to the ground. The hard-hitting stunts are powerful beyond belief and I had to immediately rewind this bit to watch it again – and I still can't get enough of it. What a brilliant ending! It makes the film and is something I'll come back to time and time again, even if I do end up fast-forwarding through the non-action stuff (not that I would really do that). CHOCOLATE is a great film and I hope we get more like this soon.

After Ong-Bak and Tom Yum Goong with Tony Jaa, Prachya Pinkaew moves towards "Chocolate", this time with a remarkable female lead JeeJa Yanin.Chocolate is about a bedridden mother (Ammara Siripong) and her autistic daughter (Yanin Vismitananda) with impeccable martial art skills. She goes on a rampage to collect the money from those who owe her mother (to cover her medical expenses).First 30 minutes take the story and characters to develop and you will see how Zen learns to kick the ass i.e. by watching The Protector (2005) and Ong-bak (2003). You will be amazed by her ability to pick-up the moves by just observation and applying them. She grows into a warrior, who can defeat 50 fighters nonchalantly. While Yanin did most of her own stunts and you will love the fight at the abattoir. The choreography is breathtaking and action is all over with a breathtaking pace.It is highly recommended that you watch this to the credits and the scenes will leave you dazed, how these actors perform the stunts and risk their lives to meet the perfection? You will appreciate their meticulous work in every frame of the movie.Highly recommended My vote 8/10

Disclaimer: was a little bit drunk and got through this 92min movie in about 50mins. Addendum to / qualification of above Disclaimer: the 50mins I mentioned included having to skip back at several points for repeat awesomeness. So the storyline includes something about a Thai girl getting involved with a Japanese guy and then getting horribly sick, and her hair falls out because cancer? and her daughter is some kind of savant (like the awesomest kind!) where she can do anything she's seen on TV, which basically makes her the world's greatest fighter at age 12 or so. And her brother (or maybe friend who lives with her? did I mention a) age 12? and b) I skipped the dialogue bits?) pimps her out as a busker based on her autism and makes bajillions of baht but then gets weirded out when some hooker dumps a wad in his hat... okay, honestly, I have no idea what the hell this was about, but who cares? If you're really keen, feel free to watch the first hour at whatever pace you like, picking out the choice segments to watch at normal speed (or even slo-mo) as I did, and you probably won't do too badly. However, when you get into about the last half-hour, slow down and watch the crazy brilliance unfold.I don't know jack about the Thai movie industry - this kid (Janna Yanin) might be the next Alec Guinness for all I know. She was kind of annoying even when she fought - she really only has one vocalisation, once she's done with the Bruce Lee impersonations - and apparently she wasn't even really a trained fighter until signing on for this movie. On top of that, the filming seemed a bit rushed and often poorly lit, some of the wire-work and the editing overall was pretty amateurish (and as indicated above I really can't even comment on the scripting / acting, although I assume it was average at best), but there were some genuinely jaw-dropping / whatthe...awesome! moments, and damn if I didn't enjoy the hell out of this little slice of Thai...NB: (spoiler?) also includes a Jackie-Chan-style blooper sequence pre- credits, which is worth a look.
