Fresh and Exciting
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
11-11-11 is based on a supposed phenomenon that was to occur on the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year. No one knew what was to happen, but there were theories. In the film 11-11-11, the theory used is that a door will open, but to where? Heaven or hell? A disillusioned author (Timothy Gibbs) who lost his wife and son in a fire goes to Spain, where his father is dying and his estranged brother, Samuel, believes demons are walking the Earth, ready for hell to be unleashed.This film is not great, but only because it was a rushed production. The writing was sloppy, but far from absolute crap like the Twilight films or M. Night's The Last Airbender, or every Syfy Channel Original Movie. The acting was just decent, with a couple scenes that were really good, some that were just unnecessary, but overall kept the movie going. Darren Lynn Bousman's directing was good, though the script nor acting helped it. The visuals, though, were actually refreshing, having some CG work and a lot of practical in an age of big blockbusters with CG-battles and epic action (CG isn't bad, just the bad directors who utilize it, ex. Michael Bay). The best thing about the film, though, is Joseph Bishara's score. Known for his work on Insidious, Dark Skies and the upcoming The Conjuring, here he melds the creepy, off-putting atmosphere of a strange thriller with horror elements, creating a moody masterpiece.Overall, 11-11-11 is a highly underrated thriller that doesn't get the attention it deserves. If only they were given more time to work on it, they could have had a magnificent script to cover for the decent and bearable acting.6.5 Stars**
This review contains spoiler, please do not read it before watching the movie.If I should conclude my opinion on this movie, I would say: a huge relapse after a weak beginning. Let's see why I think that.1. The whole concept is very illogical and not really understandable. Joseph gets "activated" by losing his son and wife in a house fire on 11-11. Later, he gets in an accident on 11-11. Then he goes to Barcelona to see his dying father (man, his father is the scariest thing in the movie). There he gets obsessed with this 11-11 thing which turns out to have a whole cult on the internet (casually, it can be found on the first results page of the searching engine). He starts to have visions of creepy creatures. Finally he conclude that he sees these things because it's a message that his priest brother Samuel is gonna be killed by these evil creatures to strengthen their powers and he can only be saved by him. In the meantime he is making several notes in a notebook stating that his brother is a prophet. Finally, he sacrifices himself for saving his brother who turns out to be some other evil creature who wants to establish a new church by using his brother's notes. Blah, so complicated. Why did we needed the evil things on 11-11 when the brother was evil too? Just for helping him out to make this new, I-will-end-the-world church? There are much easier ways of marketing.2. If the above described things wouldn't be enough, there are also many stupid things, like: a man attacks the brothers with a gun. Did they call the police? Nope, they let the guy walk around and they even pay him a visit!? The evil creatures can appear anywhere they want, they still bang on the door when they locked out... They also leave footprints, and appear on cameras (Why do they have cameras all over? Who knows? No doubt, they come handy.). On 11-11-11 some roots are appearing all over the house. What is that? Maybe just a tool to make it scarier? Fail. When the girl is going to the photo shop at 11 pm, the man is still there. Unlikely. Finally, the Spanish environment was not really authentic. Native Spanish speakers have a much more typical accent. And I don't think that they like attending masses in English. Finally, I found Joseph's attitude of expecting everyone to speak English in a foreign country (and getting nervous and impatient when they don't) really annoying. And he wants to call 911 in Spain... Quite funny.So, this movie is nor scary or interesting, neither has any remarkable storyline. Not recommended.
Wow, what a scary movie!!! I read so many bad reviews, I came this close to not renting it!! I am glad I didn't let the masses who may have not understood the movie deter me from renting, & what I feel is a genius gem of a religious horror movie. The movie was very well made and the dialog/scrip was perfect and the back drop of the house was eerie!It was cleverly written, and the storyline was completely unique and thought provoking. Darren Lynn Bousman is ahead of his time & is now a respected film maker in my mind.I will watch any and all of his movies. Mother's Day is a must see by him as well! If you love horror, you must see this one, I jumped at least 3 times!
The successful American writer and atheist Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs) participates in a support group to accept the death of his beloved wife Sarah (Salomé Jiménez) and their son Diogo. Joe befriends Sadie (Wendy Glenn) in one of the meetings and she helps him when he has a car accident. When Joe's estranged religious brother Samuel Crone (Michael Landes) tells him that their father is terminal, he travels to Barcelona to stay near the death bed of his father. Joe has visions of demons and with the number 11 and he finds that something evil will happen with Samuel and him on 11 November 2011."11-11-11" is a film with a promising premise, but with a messy and disappointing execution. The screenplay is boring and confused; the scary atmosphere with demons repeats several times along the film and becomes irritating; and the predicable plot point is hard to believe, disclosed in very fast pace and annoying. My vote is three.Title (Brazil): "11-11-11"
