Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
Simply A Masterpiece
Good movie but grossly overrated
An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.
Drillbit Taylor is a decent movie with a reasonably well developed storyline and a good comedic cast. There are definitely plenty of moments in this film that are pure fun, their is great chemistry between the cast members, the main kids are surprisingly talented for their age, and Owen Wilson definitely brings in the most charm and holds the entire movie together, he may be playing a character that is no different to one he's already played twenty times before, but he still steals the show. Though there are definitely some very funny scenes, there are parts that hit and miss too often as well, and there can also be a joke that stretches out for a long period despite not being funny in the first place, and they definitely left me feeling like it could have been a very memorable film if it didn't have those moments so often. The thing that this film fails desperately at, and is the main reason I'm giving this a six instead of seven, is trying to be sentimental, it's mostly just one joke after another for the first hour, but towards the last thirty minutes it tries to make its audience feel genuine affection and care for its characters, and it simply didn't work because, although they are likable characters, we never get very invested in them or their situation. It's definitely jam packed with imperfections, but Drillbit Taylor is still worth the watch if you ever see it on television and have some time to kill, but definitely don't go out of your way to watch it. Three kids hire a trained bodyguard to protect them from their school bully. Best Performance: Owen Wilson Worst Performance: David Koechner
Drillbit Taylor did not get the best reviews upon release. It was dissed for being unrealistic and unfunny. What comedy IS realistic!? The unrealism is a drawback and there is a lack of laughs, but on the whole, it is a nice movie that most teenagers will like.Owen Wilson plays a homeless AWOL soldier known as "Drillbit" who does all he can to make a buck. He does provide most of the laughs and this is a bit of a switch for him. He does have the same charm, but we see more of a macho side of him in this. Wade and Ryan (Hartley, Gentile) become targets of two bullies (Frost, Peck) on their first day of high school after they defend a little nerd (Dorfman). They keep their problems under the table for a while, which is very realistic. Anybody that says its not, obviously forgets about what its like to be a teenager. Or maybe times have changed that much. I understood them the whole time. And I'm no bully, but the bullying sequences are funny. This movie pokes fun at the subject. When the kids finally do decide to tell the principal, Frost puts on a facade and manipulates his way out of the situation. I know that this is supposed to poke fun at bullying, but I didn't buy into him getting off. Frost and Peck do some pretty horrible things that can't go unnoticed. Teachers would have been able to find out that they were being bullied. But as a lampoon movie, it can get away with it. They then hire Drillbit Taylor as their bodyguard who pretends to be an experienced combat soldier when he really just wants their money. What he does with them is all in good fund, but it was very unrealistic when he poses as a teacher. Sure that's the way the movie is, but it crosses into the "impossible" category. He begins a romance with the English teacher (Mann) which was a low-point. It wasn't dumb, just extremely weak. This subplot had potential. This is a comedy that does not make me laugh, but I still like. It has a charm and likable quality to it. Wilson's relationship with the kids is great. And the unrealism pokes fun at what happens when bullying does not get taken care of. That is the biggest misunderstanding this movie has. Bullying happens all the time and hardly gets handled. The subject of hiring a bodyguard is a stretch, but the way that Drillbit plays out is less like a bodyguard and more like an assistant, which is believable. He is funny, the kids and bullies are funny, and the bullying situations are presented in a humorous way. Sure there are moments of unrealism, but what really sets this apart from other movie with the same amount of flaws is how long this feels. 109 minutes isn't very long, but it feels very long watching it. I honestly don't know why.
I first watched this due to my favourite actor Owen Wilson starring in it, after watching the film I noticed one of my other favourite actors 'Josh Peck' starred in it. This film stands out to all the other comedy's as teens in high school are able to relate to it. This film although being a comedy contains sad emotional scenes, the fact that they are unaware of Drillbit's background adds suspense to the film. unlike a lot of other films this had a good plot and it was well pulled together and it managed to fit together nicely; it also did not fail as a comedy unlike some other comedy's. The bullies and students are great actors and Owen Wilson just topped it off. In my opinion this film is underrated and deserves at least a 7. I would highly recommend this film although it is not for everyone.
A very unfunny comedy starring Owen Wilson as a bum who is hired by a trio of high school nerds to protect them from the school bully. Along the way, Wilson teaches them a series of life lessons. It all ends with a battle royal with the bully and his buddies, and as such is similar to several other teen-oriented flicks from an earlier era, like MY BODYGUARD, WEIRD SCIENCE and THREE O'CLOCK HIGH. Wilson is just plain terrible, and the three child actors playing the nerds aren't very convincing. Some violence and sexual situations save it from total ruin, but again this is just a rehash of other teen-oriented movies, everyone of them better than this.
