Such a frustrating disappointment
If you don't like this, we can't be friends.
I don't have all the words right now but this film is a work of art.
best movie i've ever seen.
The Gumball Rally is directed and written by Charles Bail. It stars Michael Sarrazin, Norman Burton, Raúl Juliá, Tim McIntire and Gary Busey. Music is by Dominic Frontiere and cinematography by Richard C. Glouner. Plot sees an assortment of car enthusiasts embark on a no holds barred coast-to-coast race from New York to California with irate LAPD Lieutenant Roscoe and the force out to apprehend them. Upon its release The Gumball Rally would have seemed fresh and exciting, leading off a sub-genre of car race films based on the exploits of auto eccentrics racing coast-to-coast, its impact has been diluted by those that followed it. However, as sure as it isn't as much fun as the most popular of them all, The Cannonball Run, it certainly has the better stunts, better location work and a plethora of better cars. Clearly helmed with love and affection by Charles Bail, film isn't about story (vis-à-vis Cannonball Run), it's an ode to speedsters and excitement, to freedom and camaraderie, all splendidly package by Bail and his team. A ream of good character actors file in for the roles, with Julia and McIntire particularly standing out, while Bail uses his camera with skill for aerials, close ups and tracking shots to put the viewer right into the heart of the action. The comedy is well placed within the heart of the drama, and crucially those sequences are funny. An enjoyable speedy romp that never lets its foot off the pedal, The Gumball Rally is essential viewing for car fans and fans of 70s care free abandon. 7.5/10
Before there was "The Cannonball Run" there's "The Gumball Rally". This movie here was a lot of fun, it was full of gags and it gives the meaning of the word "coast to coast". There are like 7 teams racing from New York to California, and the police will do anything to put an end to the race. I liked the part when the team member remove the lugnuts on one of the police cars. So when they try to pull out, it just comes up short of a bust. I also liked the part where Raul Juiia's character plays that cruel gun joke on the victims which the gun looks real it's actually a water pistol. At first it wasn't funny, when the water comes out, that's when everyone starts laughing. The real fun before the race was when he races the toy care all over the woman's body, to me it's rather sexual to me and pleasing to my eyes. In the middle, when the guy got pulled over by the guys lead by Julia, he ripped off the steering wheel of the convertible, removes the guys shades and left him using the bathroom in his car. Now that's really funny! This movie was really funny and highly recommendable, and it's also one of Raul Julia's finest works as well. Rating 3.5 out of 5 stars!
Back in the 1970's movies were better. Compared to the movies they are making today this seems great. Judging the movie 29 years after its release was FUN! This film is just funny! Something The "Cannonball Run" ( A Burt Reynolds Rip-off of this movie) never got right. The characters in this movie seem real! Not stereo types! The viewer is in on the fun! In this movie we get to see an illegal auto race from New York To Long Beach, California. As a viewer you never want the race to end! At the time this movie was made it was made with actors that you have seen before but can't remember where. Well that is a good thing! The reason why is that you will not figure out who will win! If you saw the movie "Rat Race" you will see the director ripped off this movie! Now is Hollywood wants to remake this I would want "Clive Owen" to have the lead. If they want to change the story around For a female co-star I would go with Reece Witherspoon! But please do cast Jude Law! Has he stared in in any movie that made $100,000,000?
As a huge fan of car chase movies, I am very surprised how many think this film is so good. It's not so bad, but nowhere near as good as I think many make it out to be.Of course, The Gumball Rally is an illegal cross-country race where the drivers compete for a gumball machine, and the glory. So they are really just racing for the helluva it, which is an interesting plot point, but takes away serious motivation, like the $100,000 offered to the winner in Cannonball, also from 1976.And Cannonball is a vastly superior film than "Gumball." Gumball does have a few things going for it, like Michael Sarrazin who is decent, and Gary Busey who is absolutely hilarious as one of the rednecks in the Camero. And of course, Raul Julia is fantastic as the sex-crazed driver who drives with Sarrazin's buddy. The girls in the Porshe are pretty. The cars are nice but truthfully there's not much action here at all, and really the story is very uninteresting. This can't touch "Cannonball" in any way, shape or form. But with "Cannonball" just recently released on DVD, I will pick up "Gumball" if it ever gets a DVD release, only because of any potential extras and it would be great to see it in widescreen and with a cleaned-up print. But really, if you are going to buy just one of the cross-country race movies, totally stay away from the "Cannonball Run" films, maybe rent "Gumball," and definitely buy "Cannonball."
