Truly Dreadful Film
Simply Perfect
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
Good movie but grossly overrated
There's only a limit to every person's principles, decency and humanity and this movie could have been made better to show this but it's not bad watch never the less.A lot of users have stated that the doctor's role should not have been lengthened, that it was absolutely useless bu I don't know if I'm right but I think the writer and the director wanted to show the limits of human patience both ways - human patience when they are in need and human patience when others are in need.
Iris (Brittany Snow) has returned home to care for her younger brother who has cancer. Dr. Barden offers her an opportunity. He invites her to the Lambrick estate to join others in playing a game for its wealthy benefactors. There is surprisingly little tension in the game playing. The premise is heavy-handed. It starts from the beginning. The brother should be younger which would make her plight more compelling. Barden should be more secretive about the game. In fact, she should suspect that it's a sex for treatment trade. At least, that would be a shocking twist. Once the game starts, there is little tension. The main reason is that the participants don't actually have real choices. They have no agency. Shockingly, there is a good escape attempt which is the only tense situation. Anyways, two minutes is not a long time and it's doubtful that the men wouldn't do it. The premise is an intriguing idea but a moral dilemma does not always translate cinematically. One is more likely to be bored by this.
Would you rather falls very much into the genre of torture thriller. A genre that seems strong for volume, and lacking when it comes to quality. Would you rather is interesting in terms of concept, makes me think of the difference in healthcare between the USA and the UK, it seems hard for us Brits to contemplate someone in Poverty having no access to health care. It's that system that gives the film its story, how far would a girl go to change her brother's life.It starts off fairly mild, then gets more and more grim, without being visually gratuitous, that I think benefits the viewer, leaving the imagination do its work. You feel the enjoyment the twisted benefactor Shepard Lambrick gets from each 'game,' Jeffrey Combs is undoubtedly the standout in the film, but Robin Lord Taylor and Brittany Snow also stand out.I wouldn't say it's ultimately satisfying, but it's still a good watch.
PROS: The thing that I liked most about this movie would have to be the acting. You had people who could show genuine terror as well as actors who showed true insanity. The movie offered you such a wide variety of characters which was nice because I was given my own would you rather. Would I rather this person dies, or this person. I also really liked how light hearted the movie felt. I understand how dark the movie is, so it was quite nice to have a release character to sort of break up the darkness. This sort of dark comedic vibe lasted through the entirety of the film, even the ending, which I liked, had a slight humor to it.CONS: This movie lagged. If there is anything at all that I hate the most in horror movies are movies that build slowly, or not at all, for no specific reason. This was one of those movies. I couldn't tell if the climax happened 25 minutes too soon, or they just didn't have one. Either way I felt bored. The final and most perilous thing would be the aggravation this movie caused me. I went in to the move expecting to see gore, because the movie is a torture film, but I barely saw any blood. They really missed the mark on this one.www.chorror.com
