I love this movie so much
Great Film overall
Absolutely Fantastic
This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
This film is a must watch. Without spoiling it, there is a scene after a rollerblading suited person stumbles, don't worry if you think you might miss it, it is a long scene and it reflects all that is good with the world. The ending is very very nice, and you will want to watch this film again, and probably once more, so, like me, buy the dvd, it is worth doing. I really did not look into the film before watching, so, imagine my surprise to see Penn as the main actor, i really do not like any films with him in, and then he does this, what was that about?, only he could have pulled it off, and with such confidence, not one moment did he falter in his character. I would not be the same person today had i not seen this film, it has firm beliefs in its making and delves quite deeply into what being human is, what we have been, and what we are, and how we process things, we can process them very differently, it is our choice, we decide how we react, maybe we need to take heed of this and make the human race into something more forgiving, no matter how bad the crime
If there was a prize for overdoing the quirky, this movie would win it. Sean Penn plays ex-rock star Cheyenne, a mega rich guy who is married with a female firefighter. In real life, rock stars usually shack up with models and actresses. But not our Cheyenne, he wants a firefighter... and the two of them live boringly in a huge villa with an empty pool, where they play some sort of ball game. Yet another instance of overdoing the quirky.Besides dressing up like Robert Smith of the Cure, inclusive of red lipstick, Cheyenne does not have much to do, except cruising shopping malls. Then he learns that his long-estranged father is dying and decides to pay a visit. Once Cheyenne lands in the US, we switch to another movie. Now we are in road movie-with-a-vengeance territory. Unfortunately, this part – which sounded more promising than the first one – is carried out with the same quirkiness and lack of energy. Weirdos appear on screen and depart for no discernible reason in what seems the longest second and third acts ever. How does it end? I confess I do not know. I fell asleep because I did not care, and still have not mustered enough energy or interest to check.
Greetings from Lituania."This Must Be the Place" (2011) is the kind of movie where you simply watch without following or taking the plot very seriously, although it touches some very serious themes like holocaust. Sean Penn gives a superb and unusual performance. This man could act anything, seriously, he's is brilliant. Other performances are OK, but basically we don't see them much as this is Sean Penn tour de force in this road movie while trying to bond with himself. This picture features superb song and full performance by Talking Heads and their song "This must be the place", which is superbly performed at the end by singer Gloria - great song, great voice - sounds very positive and created this special mood at the end of the movie.Overall, "This must be the place" has some pacing issued in the middle section, movie is a bit long, at 2 hours it drags a bit, and that just because it's plot isn't really focused. The main character visits many places and find many people, which distracts from main plot. But "This must be the place" has very good things, that finally makes this a good movie, definitely worth seeing.
Cheyenne (Sean Penn) is a weird looking retired rock star living in Dublin. He spends his days hanging out with his young friend Mary (Eve Hewson, Bono's daughter) trying to set her up with a straight laced guy working at the mall. After the death of his father whom he hasn't talked to in 30 years, he finds that he's been hunting a little known Auschwitz guard named Aloise Lange. So he decides to continue the hunt himself. There is nothing wrong with weird, and I like Sean Penn's odd looking soft spoken ex-rocker character. I like his relationship with Mary. It's funny that he keeps trying to set her up with somebody who has nothing in common with her. Then it takes a turn into the surreal. It's like they abandoned a good movie to do another movie. All the characters in the first act are basically dropped once he goes on the Nazi hunt. The nice semi-father-daughter relationship is dropped. The wife is dropped. The final reveal is kinda interesting, but it's not worth the lost opportunities of good character relationships.
