Analyze This
Countless wiseguy films are spoofed in this film that centers on the neuroses and angst of a powerful Mafia racketeer who suffers from panic attacks. When Paul Vitti needs help dealing with his role in the "family," unlucky shrink Dr. Ben Sobel is given just days to resolve Vitti's emotional crisis and turn him into a happy, well-adjusted gangster.

Lack of good storyline.
I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Analyze This (1999): Dir: Harold Ramis / Cast: Robert De Niro, Billy Crystal, Lisa Kudrow, Joe Viterelli, Chazz Palminteri: Hilarious comedy about problems too big for one person. This is a parody of the roles that Robert De Niro is accustomed too. He plays a gangster seeking professional help and Billy Crystal plays a psychiatrist who unwillingly puts his wedding on hold to assist him. Structure is handled in sitcom fashion with De Niro interrupting Crystal's life at any opportunity. Director Harold Ramis satires the gangster genre and skillfully breaks tension in conclusion. Ramis is known as a director of lewd comedies. Among his best is Caddyshack and National Lampoon's Vacation. De Niro is hilarious as he is reduced to tears over a hidden trauma overwhelming him. Crystal is great as the frustrated psychiatrist juggling his job and his personal life. One of the film's pleasures is how the conclusion is handled. Joe Viterelli as De Niro's loyal bodyguard steals moments especially when Crystal takes control and enters a potential dangerous yet funny situation. The weak link here is Lisa Kudrow as Crystal's bride who is more or less a prop. Chazz Palminteri is cast because obviously Joe Pesci wasn't available. Through De Niro we learn that there is a breaking point to everyone. Through Crystal we learn that we can make a positive impact just by giving our time. Score: 8 ½ / 10
DeNiro rules. DeNiro is good when he is bad and good when he is good, so no point in dwelling on him. It's worth watching this movie just to see him. This movie is funny and very well photographed and is never boring. All the characters struggle against a system that has perpetuated falsehoods. There are also many minor characters who just seem to exist in this world. It's not the thing to see if you're in the mood for something uplifting, or something with tons of thrills and action. But it is a true gem in which the only thing that keeps it afloat is the sensitivity of the desperately needy relationship between the characters. Rent it today.
This may be the beginning of the period in which Robert De Niro just stopped trying. This period continues, unfortunately. This movie is not funny. I didn't laugh -- not once. The premise seems amusing, but not too far into the movie you start to get that familiar feeling that goes with so many bad movies: that the film editor tried to piece together whatever they had shot into a decent movie, even though not enough was completed. What was completed was of mediocre quality, but the final product is GARBAGE. I paid to see this in the theater and really wanted to ask for my money back. There's one scene in particular that is clearly improvised... but so badly. Don't watch this. I can't even imagine how bad the sequel was with such a disappointing start.
Analyze This is a great movie with a very well developed storyline and an outstanding comedic cast. It's a really funny movie, I've seen it many times and the same scenes have me in stitches each time, it's a very clever parody on the crime genre and you can tell the writers, directors and actors did research to make the movie feel authentic. I didn't really like the scenes when the film parodied or made reference to the Godfather, I felt that it was better being a satire on mafia films in general and making reference to specific films was unnecessary. Robert de Niro and Billy Crystal both deliver outstanding performances, de Niro played the type of character that he is use to playing, but with a twist, he had to do scenes like the character having a panic attack that really let the actor shine, as for Crystal, he played a very funny and believable psychiatrist who is caught up in a situation he dosen't want to be in, and he portrays this perfectly throughout. Packed with big laughs and great character development, I would recommend Analyze This to anyone looking for a good comedy or crime film. A successful psychiatrist's life is turned upside down after a mobster seeks his help after a panic attack, and discovers insecurities he never knew he had. Best Performance: Robert de Niro Worst Performance: Molly Shannon
